No new limited release titles this week, but a half dozen holdovers and a full repertory calendar to compensate. Next week, predictably, there?s a lot of horror-themed special programming.
TOTM in IN Near-Term Scheduling News: Regular readers who have noticed that this column has been posting progressively later in the day the last few weeks may have guessed the reason: I?ve got another big trial coming up. It?s fast approaching, getting ready for it is already cutting heavily into my free time, and after it starts, free time will be nothing but a memory. Next week?s edition will be the last until I get my life back in December.

THEATRICAL HOLDOVERS (AND ?RE-OPENINGS?)
English Vinglish- The new Bollywood comedy English Vinglish is the comeback film of Sridevi, a popular star in Tamil and Bollywood films of the ?80s and ?90s. The playful title is a reference to her housewife character?s adventures in learning English. In a fun fact, the teaser trailer featuring Sridevi reading the movie?s Censor Certificate in character (i.e., in broken English) was a YouTube hit. It holds over at the Republic Theaters Georgetown 14 in Indianapolis.
Liberal Arts- ?When his favorite college professor invites him to campus to speak at his retirement dinner, Jesse [writer-director Josh Radnor] jumps at the chance. He is prepared for the nostalgia of the dining halls and dorm rooms, the parties and poetry seminars; what he doesn?t see coming is Zibby (Elizabeth Olsen)?a beautiful, precocious, classical-music-loving sophomore.? Liberal Arts holds over at the Landmark?s Keystone Art Cinema in Indianapolis.
OMG Oh My God!- Akshay Kumar produced and has a (prominently advertised) cameo in this Bollywood comedy-drama, which is adapted from a play about a shopkeeper with an ax to grind against the deities who didn?t protect his store from being destroyed in a tornado. It has one more show tomorrow evening at the Republic Theaters Georgetown 14 in Indianapolis.
The Oranges- An adulterous affair between a suburban dad and his neighbors? daughter- and his daughter?s childhood best friend- is a force for positive life change in this indie comedy. Hugh Laurie, Catherine Keener, Oliver Platt, and Allison Janey star. It holds over at the Landmark?s Keystone Art Cinema in Indianapolis.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower- ?A funny and touching coming-of-age story based on the beloved best-selling novel by director Stephen Chbosky, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a modern classic that captures the dizzying highs and crushing lows of growing up.? It holds over at the Landmark?s Keystone Art Cinema in Indianapolis and opens at the Cinemark Movies 14 in Mishawaka, Showplace Cinemas East in Evansville, Rave Jefferson Pointe 18 in Fort Wayne and Rave Metropolis 18 in Plainfield, and at three AMCs: Bloomington 11, Indianapolis 17, and Schererville 12.
Runaway Slave- This documentary is narrated by a minister and former NAACP chapter president who has become disenchanted with progressivism as a solution for the endemic poverty of black America. It features interviews with a number of well-known black conservatives. Runaway Slave holds over at the AMC Castleton Square 14 in Indianapolis.
Sleepwalk with Me- ?Comedian Mike Birbiglia brings his hilarious semi-autobiographical story?already an off-Broadway smash and a best-selling book?to the screen as writer/director/star in his cinematic debut. Occasionally commenting ruefully on the action (?Remember: you?re on my side!?), Birbiglia plays alter-ego Matt Pandamiglio, a struggling stand-up comedian avoiding commitment with his long-time girlfriend.? It holds over at the Landmark Keystone Art Cinema in Indianapolis and starts at the Cinema Center in Fort Wayne and Yes Cinema in Columbus.
FESTIVALS, REPERTORY SCREENINGS, AND MORE
Indianapolis and Central Indiana
Tonight the IMA is showing a free double feature of the Mexican films Maria Candelaria, a 1940s award-winning drama starring Dolores del Rio, and 1960s sex farce Modisto de Senoras at 7 in the Toby. The films are presented in cooperation with the Mexican Consulate.
The 1950s original House on Haunted Hill is the weekend movie at the Artcraft Theatre in Franklin; shows today and tomorrow at 2 and 7:30.
The Keystone Art Cinema?s seasonal midnight movie series continues this weekend with the Japanese drama Battle Royale, a huge hit in its native country that has a very similar premise to, and anticipated, The Hunger Games; showing Fridays and Saturdays. Scroll to the end of this page for the full series lineup, which continues through October.
Tomorrow night presents another opportunity to see a midnight show of Repo! The Genetic Opera at the Irving Theater in Irvington, on Indianapolis? old east side.
The annual Heartland Film Festival starts Thursday and runs through the 27th; most showings are at the AMC Castleton Square 14 and AMC Traders Point 12. The opening night movie, which is at the IMA?s Toby Theater, is High Ground, a documentary about disabled veterans who participate in a Himalayan mountain climbing program.
Southern Indiana
The Skyline Drive-In in Shelbyville is observing October with Skyline Scares, Friday/Saturday triple features of a new horror movie to start and then two classics- or ?classics? as the case may be. This weekend?s second and third features are Motel Hell and Invasion of the Bee Girls.
Programming is light this week at the IU Cinema, with only six (Indianapolis should be so lucky?) movies. The first three titles in the lineup are part of the Cinema?s ?Good Behavior/Bad Behavior? thematic program: Sunday is the classic political drama All the King?s Men; Boys Don?t Cry is Monday; and Tuesday brings Mean Girls. There?s a sneak preview of the new inspirational drama Little Red Wagon on Wednesday night at 7. The week finishes out with Chicken with Plums and Detropia on Thursday night (both of those have an encore screening next Friday).
There are a few showings this weekend of indie comedy 2 Days in New York and Stars in Shorts (a short film program) in Bloomington courtesy of the Ryder film series.
Northern Indiana
Three movie showings in the Tournees Film Festival this week at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center: The Kid with a Bike tonight; A Cat in Paris on Sunday; and The Artist Thursday (two shows; also showing Friday).
The Cinematheque for All repertory series in West Lafayette continues with a collection of short films from Romania called Tales from a Golden Age. Screenings are Wednesday nights on the Purdue campus; fall season lineup.
Also on Wednesday, the Cinema Center?s Sister Cities movie series continues with The Miracle of Bern: ?German filmmaker and former professional soccer player S?nke Wortmann directs the family sports drama The Miracle of Bern. The title is in reference to the unexpected German victory over the Hungarians at the 1954 World Cup in Bern, Switzerland.?
NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND
Next Saturday at the Cinema Center in Fort Wayne is the Braineaters Ball. ?Get spooky with Cinema Center?s Fright Night celebration. The Braineaters? Ball offers a horrifyingly good mix of fun for all ages!? The program includes movies, food, costume prizes, a ?macabre art gallery? and more.
The annual Dark Carnival Film Festival is next weekend at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater in Bloomington. ?Dark Carnival is a celebration of horror, featuring live entertainment, merchandise vendors, special guests and film screenings. It?s a different show every year, and Dark Carnival events have included outdoor drive-in film screenings, costume contests, dance parties, sideshows, horror hosts, filmmaking seminars, burlesque dancers, live fire shows and more!? The program runs Saturday and Sunday.
The Yes Cinema will have three shows next week (Friday, Saturday, and Wednesday) of The Shining. Also, the Yes is starting a movie-a-month classic film series with Rear Window, playing on October 20 and 21.
If you live near a Goodrich Quality Theater, you can see the original Halloween on the big screen on the evenings of October 25 and 30. Visit the theater?s website for a list of participating theaters.
If you?re in striking distance of a theater that shows the Fathom Events- which is much of the state- you can see the classic horror film double feature Frankenstein and its sequel The Bride of Frankenstein on the 24th as part of the TCM Event Series. The next night offers a different kind of horror when . In a different key, Wednesday, October 23 is the Fathom screening of the new documentary The Levi Effect, about cyclist Levi Leipheimer; the film will be preceded by an introduction by Leipheimer and followed by a panel discussion.
On October 24, the Irving Theater will have a double feature of the original The Invisible Man and its sequel The Invisible Man Returns as part of the Irvington Halloween Festival; tickets are just $ 5, $ 3 for kids under 12. On the day itself, there?s a Halloween showing of A Clockwork Orange at the IMA?s Toby Theater at 7.
The KAC?s coming soon page lists two documentaries for next Friday, The Other Dream Team and Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel, and the Swedish drama Simon and the Oaks for the 26th.
