Ford cutting 1,500 UK jobs as Europe losses grow

LONDON (AP) ? Carmaker Ford announced Thursday it will cut 1,500 jobs in Britain, closing a plant and eliminating a stamping and tooling facility, as it warned that losses in Europe will exceed $1.5 billion this year.

Ford Motor Co., which on Wednesday announced the closure of another plant in Brussels, is struggling in Europe. Sales are down as the region's economic crisis hurts demand from households and businesses.

Ford said its transit van plant in Southampton would be closed in July and the stamping and tooling facility in east London would shut sometime in 2013. Transit van production will be consolidated at the plant in Kocaeli, Turkey.

The Southampton plant, which employed 500 workers, was Ford's last vehicle assembly plant in Britain. Production has fallen from 66,000 in 2008 to 28,000 last year, when the work was reduced to a single shift.

Ford now has 11,500 workers at plants in Britain, the Unite union said.

Ford promised further investments at the Dagenham plant in east London to support production of a new 20-litre, four-cylinder low-CO2 diesel engine family, and at the Bridgend plant in Wales to support gasoline engine manufacturing.

"Investing in what we do best here in the U.K., and building on our strengths is the only way to deal decisively with the new economic reality in Europe, and help build a profitable business," said Joe Greenwell, chairman of Ford of Britain.

Len McCluskey, general secretary of the Unite union, said workers would fight against the closures.

"This announcement has been handled disgracefully," McCluskey said "Only a few months ago Ford was promising staff a new transit model for Southampton in 2014."

Closing the Belgian and British plants reduces vehicle assembly capacity, excluding Russia, by 18 percent, or 355,000 units, yielding annual savings of at least $450 million, Ford said.

Ford's sales were down 14.9 percent in September compared with a year ago, worse than the 10.8 percent fall for all European vehicle brands, according to Acea, the European carmakers' association.

Austerity-weary Greeks stage new general strike

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Labor unions in recession-hobbled Greece are holding another general strike against a new harsh austerity program, as European leaders beset by a deep debt crisis and economic stagnation gather for a summit meeting in Brussels.

Thursday's strike is set to close down public services and severely hamper most forms of transport ? with even taxi drivers joining in for nine hours ? while shopkeepers in Athens and other cities are planning to shut down for the day. It is the second general strike in less than a month.

Unions are organizing two separate marches in central Athens. Demonstrators' ire will focus on the new belt-tightening for 2013-14, demanded by bailout creditors to release a desperately needed new rescue loan payment.

The city has seen hundreds of anti-austerity protests ? many violent ? over the past three years, since Greece revealed it had been misreporting key deficit figures and sank into an economic gloom so deep it has been likened to the Great Depression of the 1930s.

The country is clinging to solvency with the help of two massive international bailouts worth a total ?240 billion ($315 billion). To secure them, it committed to drastic spending cuts, tax hikes and reforms, aimed to cure years of profligate government spending.

But while significantly reducing budget deficits, the measures accelerated a recession that after five years is closer to a depression. By the end of next year, the economy is expected to have shrunk by about a quarter from 2008 levels. And with one in four workers out of a job, Greece has the worst unemployment rate in the 27-nation European Union.

"In general, we're going from bad to worse," said 85-year-old pensioner Giorgos Ierodimos. "Salaries are being reduced, pensions are being reduced, everything is getting more expensive, from food to health care to hospitals, medicines, everything. So how will people live? How will we live?"

The country's four-month-old coalition government is negotiating a new austerity package with debt inspectors from the EU, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank. The idea is to save ?11 billion ($14.4 billion) in spending ? largely on pensions and health care ? and raise an extra ?2.5 billion ($3.3 billion) through taxes.

After more than a month and a half of arguing, a deal seems close. On Wednesday, the EU, IMF and ECB troika said there was agreement on "most of the core measures needed to restore the momentum of reform" and that the rest of the issues should be resolved in coming days.

Athens hopes to get the next loan installment around mid-November, shortly after which it will run out of cash. That would probably force Greece to default on its mountain of debt and potentially abandon the 17-strong eurozone.

Unions say the cost of securing the money is too high.

"What people can shoulder new measures, when approximately 70 percent of it is caught between poverty and destitution?" said Ilias Iliopoulos, secretary-general of the ADEDY civil servant union. "It is absolutely impossible."

"On the noteworthy day of the summit in Brussels, we want to tell the leaders of the European Union 'that's enough. We can't take any more,'" he said. "This is not worthy of Europe. It is a policy of exploitation, of profiteers and loan sharks."

The 24-hour strike will stop all rail and ferry services, while a walkout by air traffic controllers will ground flights for three hours. Schools and tax offices will be closed all day, state hospitals will function on emergency staffing and bank services will be disrupted.

Athens police will be on alert for potential rioting, as most recent major protests have turned violent with masked anarchists fighting police. Municipal officials in traditional riot hotspots on Wednesday removed rubbish bins from the streets, as rioters usually set them on fire.

But the violence does nothing to improve the lot of low-income Greeks, like Ierodimos.

"We've cut everything," he said. "Now it's only the necessities that we buy. We bought a bread ring with my wife to eat for lunch. A bread ring of 40 cents. And a cauliflower to eat as a salad. I'm not ashamed to say it. Why should I be?"

Study evaluates treating mothers with ADHD to improve outcomes in kids

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? University of Illinois at Chicago researchers are conducting a study to determine if treating mothers with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder -- either with medication or parent training -- will help children at risk for ADHD.

"About 25 percent of the time, when a child has ADHD, there's a parent that has ADHD," said Mark Stein, UIC professor of pediatrics and psychiatry and principal investigator of the study. "We realize this is a weakness in our service delivery models, because often clinicians focus on just treating the child and ignore the fact that another family member has ADHD."

Two treatments are very effective for children with ADHD: behavior modification and stimulant medication. Both require "a very dedicated, organized person, which, if you have ADHD, that's going to be a challenge for you," said Stein, who noted that treatment is often administered by the mother, and that women are less likely to have their ADHD identified.

The Treating Mothers First Study will identify mothers of children between ages 4 and 8 with behavior problems who are at risk for ADHD -- and evaluate both the mother and child.

Mothers with ADHD will receive either a long-acting stimulant or behavioral training for eight weeks. Afterward, the mother, family and child will be re-evaluated and then receive treatment for another eight weeks with the same treatment or a combination of medication and parent training.

Parents with ADHD may have difficulty implementing consistent rules and consequences, and they may not respond to a child's appropriate or positive behavior, Stein said. As part of the study "we observe the parent trying to play with the child, trying to get the child to do things like homework or cleaning up their room," he said.

The goal is to determine if the need for stimulant medication in children can be delayed if the mother is treated first.

ADHD is often misdiagnosed as depression or anxiety in women, and it often contributes to marital, parenting, sleep and medical problems, Stein said. Many health care providers have not been trained in diagnosing and treating adult ADHD.

"When a mom complains about how bad her life is, she's given a prescription for Prozac versus understanding that she's always had issues with inattention, distractibility, or impulsivity, and that's why she's having problems," Stein says.

"When you think of ADHD, you think of a 7-year-old boy, not a mom who says 'I am overwhelmed, easily distracted, and just can't get things done,'" he said.

Co-investigators include Drs. Joshua Nathan, Janine Rosenberg, Evelyn Figueroa and Edwin Cook of UIC; and Dr. Andrea Chronis-Tuscano of the University of Maryland.

KCET in Los Angeles, noncom satellite Link TV announce merger ...

KCET, the Los Angeles public TV station that split from PBS nearly two years ago, is merging with Link TV, the noncommercial national satellite broadcaster that specializes in international news and documentary programming.

The boards of KCET and San Francisco-based Link TV approved the Jan. 1, 2013, merger on Tuesday morning. No money was involved in the deal.

Jerome (Photo: KCET)

The new nonprofit, KCETLink, will have one board and management team but continue to distribute programming under their established brands. ?Jerome will be chief executive officer of KCETLink, with Link TV President Paul Mason serving as chief strategy officer. Both will be based at KCET headquarters in Los Angeles.

Staff and operations will be consolidated, Jerome said, with KCET taking on ?a significant number? of Link?s 40 employees, for a total of around 150 staffers. ?As with any merger situation, we?ll be taking a look? at possible restructuring or layoffs, he said. Employees will work for both entities.

As KCETLink, both media outlets gain new distribution platforms for their programs. Link TV, now available in 33 million households nationwide via the DirecTV and Dish satellite networks, will pick up some KCET programs and take over one of KCET?s three multicast channels in Los Angeles, gaining access to broadcast audiences in the nation?s second-largest market. KCET will air some Link TV news programs on its main channel.

Some episodes of SoCal Connected, KCET?s weeknightly newsmagazine, will be among the shows to run on Link TV?s schedule; those programs will be chosen based on their appeal to national audiences. KCET has yet to decide which of its three multicast channels will be dropped to make way for Link TV; it currently offers Kids & Family channel, V-me and MHz Worldview.

Paul Mason (Photo: Link TV)

Merger talks began ?serendipitously? about six months ago, Mason said, when leaders of the two organizations ?started to notice complementary factors? between them.

Public media needs to find more efficient and intelligent ways of operating, KCET President Al Jerome told Current, and that often means collaboration. ?By consolidating our workforces we came up with operating and financial efficiencies, at the same time taking advantage of our complementary strengths,? he said. ?As we walked down that road, we said, ?We have to be the architects of our own future.? The merger idea was the best solution.?

Jerome and Mason also have similar backgrounds: Jerome came to KCET in 1996 from a career in commercial broadcasting that included 17 years in NBC management; before Mason took over in September 2011 at Link TV, he was a senior v.p. of ABC News.

After selling its historic studios on Hollywood?s Sunset Boulevard to the Church of Scientology for $42 million, KCET moved into a new headquarters in Burbank in April.

With its new production facilities, Jerome said, KCET?s leadership ?felt we had real, significant production expertise to bring to bear to assist Link. And Link is doing a tremendous job in digital technology, so that?s complementary to us.?

Link carries global and national news, documentaries and international cultural programming. ?We came to see KCET?s relationship with the BBC, and the international programming they?ve been sharing both in news and entertainment, as having the same values that are important to our audience,? Mason said.

Today?s announcement is the latest of several program initiatives unveiled by KCET since its split from PBS in January 2011. The station retooled its lineup to feature international news programming, paired with popular British dramas offered by other distributors, such as Doc Martin. Deals aimed at expanding its own production output ? such as a $50 million partnership with a former Disney executive ? have been slow to bear fruit.

Link TV premiered on Direct TV nearly 13 years ago after the FCC required satellite broadcasters to set aside part of their spectrum for public-service purposes (Current, Dec. 13, 1999). Its parent organization, Link Media, was co-founded by the Independent Television Service, the Internews Network, and Internews Interactive; it operates Link TV as well as websites LinkTV.org, LinkNews and ViewChange.org, an advocacy storytelling site funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Link Media is largely funded by a variety of philanthropic organizations including the Knight Foundation, the Wyncote Foundation, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation and the Annenberg Foundation.

KCET?s operating budget for 2011-12 is $33.7 million; Link TV?s is about $8 million.

Legends in the Making :: Room of Requirment

Celine

Celine lay under her covers listening to the sounds of her fellow dungeon mates breath's slowing to the pace that alerted her to their sleeping state. It had taken a while for everyone to turn in for the night, being a Friday and everything, but finally everyone in the dorms had turned it. It was well after eleven before she was able to crawl from her bunk, fully dressed in her favorite Muggle outfit of skinny jeans, suede boots, a turtleneck sweater to protect against the chill and small vest for added flair. School had only begun a couple of weeks before and it was her first bit of mischief during her last year of school, the blonde Slytherin could not wait to begin. Creeping as slowly as she possibly could from the end of her bunk she was able to make it to the doorway of her room with only a small scare when one of the girls in her year let out a snort in her sleep. Making it into the common room and out of the secret wall was no issue after that.

It had been established the previous day, when hanging out with her friends around the school grounds, that they should all sneak into the room of requirement for a game of truth or dare. None of them were sure who originally introduced the room, they had found reference to it in one of the parents old diaries and had been using it since their third year of school as a place to escape from their worries and troubles. At least Celine had, she suspected the rest had as well and although they had all used the room a couple of times together previously, never had it been on such a scale as this. She shivered with anticipation as she made her way up through the dungeons praying that she didn't run into a nosy prefect or wandering teacher on her way.

Finally, with a very little trouble she made it to the room of requirement and stood in front of the wall tapping her wand against her right leg thinking to herself. She had to make sure the room had exactly what they all needed, and that they wouldn't be found out accidentally while inside it. She could only imagine the trouble they would all be in if such a large group was caught. Smiling and snapping her fingers together she paced back and forth in front of the spot three times thinking hard about exactly what they needed and a tapestry appeared in front of her. Grinning she pushed it to the side and found a small door that she was able to pass through and into the room.

The room was perfect, just what she wanted, a sunken fire pit sat in the middle and the lights were low. Around the fire pit were eight comfy looking seats consisting of armchairs and loveseats and even one long couch that would fit three. She circled the room and saw several cupboards filled with all sorts of items that would be good for a dare, eye of newt, toe of frog, she wondered if she would get anyone to try and eat one of them. Giggling to herself she closed the cabinet and flipped her blonde hair over her shoulder, it was extraordinary the secrets one could discover in the castle if they only knew where to look and how to use it.

Looking around she did wonder how she had possibly been the first one to make it there, usually one of the others always beat her to the spot. She didn't ponder it too long however, sure that she would be joined by her friends just as soon as they could weave their way past the teachers and other obstacles created to keep students in bed during after hours such as these. Humming to herself, Celine pulled out a bottle of bright green nail polish and began painting her nails. She always kept a bottle on her person since the teachers were constantly making her remove the Muggle creation every chance they got. It didn't bother her though, having so much time on her hands anyways, she had become quite adapt at painting her nails and was constantly experimenting with new designs.

And this is how the seventeen year old Slytherin contented herself alone in the hidden room of the castle while awaiting for her friends to join her and their game of truth or dare to begin.

Monty

Monty didn?t bother going to bed that night, instead simply remaining in the common room for a while. Never sleeping more than five hours, and that on a good day, Monty didn?t usually go to bed until midnight at the earliest. Staring into the fireplace, his mind was a thousand miles away, his hand almost unconsciously rolling a coin across his knuckles.

This was the start of his last year at Hogwarts. As soon as graduation had come and gone Monty planned on changing his last name to Henderson, that of his mother, and breaking every tie he had with his current family. Unlike many seventh year students who were busy planning their careers after Hogwarts, Monty had a different plan. For the past five years he had been, little by little, storing away some of his father?s money. It wasn?t like he was stealing it, though. Being a wealthy man, his father was quite generous when it came to giving money for this and that, especially since he found out about his mother. While it was never spoken aloud, Monty could tell that his father was trying to buy his silence. To be honest, it worked. Monty had enough saved to disappear for a while, go wherever he wanted go, do whatever he wanted to do.

For a while he considered waiting for Celine and walking to the Room of Requirement with her, but decided against it. He hadn?t spent much time with his closest friend at the school, a girl in Hufflepuff named Tarvel, and figured he?d rather sneak over to the entrance of her dormitory and wait for her there. Not wanting to miss her, Monty left early, around ten. It was a slightly dangerous time to wander around, considering curfew was at nine which meant that there would be more activity than if he waited, but by this point in time Monty had perfected his route to the Hufflepuff dorm and wasn?t worried.

Just to be safe though, he was wearing slightly baggy black jeans and a dark gray long sleeved shirt, as well as his favorite shoes, his converse. There was one point that Monty was almost caught though, but a simple spell caused a noise to occur down the hall which distracted the prefect long enough for Monty to slip away. After that, it was smooth sailing to the Hufflepuff dorm, where Monty found himself a nice spot in a dark corner and waited for Tar. Tonight was going to be fun, he thought. While the group had been together for a while, there was still plenty for them to learn about each other in a game of Truth or Dare. While it sounded a little childish, it was actually just the thing to get their minds off of school work and the drama that came with living at Hogwarts.

Tarvel

Tarvel had been a bit against the idea to slip away at night to the Room of Requirements, but eventually had given in. Though, she was still scared a bit that someone would find out. But, once the whole group had said yes, she would just go along. Plus, maybe she would get to know people a bit better, like Monty, her best friend. She hadn't seen him a lot, so she was actually quite excited to spend some time together with him. So eventually, she had agreed with the group to go to the Room of Requirements.

It was still quite early, around ten, but she stayed where she was. She had to wait for everyone to fall asleep before she could go. She could have waited in the common room, but she liked to lie on the bed. This was her last year at Hogwarts, and she was going to miss this place badly. The Castle, and the nature around it she loved to explore, she was really going to miss this great place. And she was going to miss her friends, especially Monty. She didn't even know what she should become after graduation. Maybe a vet, or a teacher. She doubted though she was smart enough for that.

She was going to miss the amazing creatures she had fallen in love with. She had been studying them all, and loved every single creature in its own way. Though, some creatures scared her a bit, like the Giant Spiders in the Forbidden Forest. But still, she loved them all in their own way, and she hoped to maybe even get a pet, like a dragon. But she also knew they needed a lot of care, and she easily forget things at times.

Time seemed to go by so slow, she got up from bed and went to the common room. It was around eleven at that time, so it should be late enough to sneak away. No one had noticed her, so she left the common room and looked around to see if she could spot Monty, having a feeling he was waiting for her. Then they could walk together to the Room of Requirements. She didn't like to walk alone either, she feared it a bit to walk alone. Finally spotting Monty, she smiled faintly and went to him. Wearing a dark simple pants and a black t-shirt, she might be hard to spot. Which was just what she needed.

Niles

It was that awful half sleep state. Where Niles was semi aware that he was awake but was still in the grasp of sleep. He tossed around, getting his already tangled self deeper into the mess of his sheets. But it was a sharp swat to the face that shocked him awake. Sitting bolt upright, in his semi-drowsy state, Niles nearly fell from his bed. The was a muted howl from his sheets and as he orientated himself, fished inside to find his cat Cleo buried within the material. The cheeky thing hadn't been pleased with his moving so decided to show her dissatisfaction with a paw to the face. It had definitely gotten his attention. But she had already forgotten the incident and had moved to where she was now curled, purring peacefully, at the base of his bed. With lethargic limbs he began rubbing his eyes to clear the blurry vision. He blinked another few times and wasn't able to suppress the yawn that overtook him. He couldn't believe he was so exhausted, it had only been a week back at school! To match his tired limbs, his mind was equally slow. It took him a bit to realise what the niggling thought in the back of his mind was telling him. The effect was a mini panic attack as he remembered what they had planned for tonight. He frantically fumbled for his wand that was rested somewhere on his side table. After finally locating the blasted thing he gripped it and quickly drew the sheets over his head so he could perform the spell that would emit light so he could read the time on his Rolex watch (a guilty present from his parents). The big hand had just ticked over to 11pm and he let out a relieved breath. He wasn't late just yet. Letting the light fade, he flipped the sheet off and stumbled out of bed. The hands of sleep still hanging onto him. But somehow he got up, and sliding in his fluffy socks made his way to his wardrobe. Pulling out whatever he grabbed first, which just so happened to be his Kizz shirt and just a pair of grey slacks, he quickly dressed and headed downstairs. He wasn't exactly quiet but he knew that no one would bother him or even bother waking as they were used to his mischievous cat waking him up at odd hours.

He was walking in a daze, barely noticing anything, it was a wonder that he didn't run into any trouble on the way. His mind wasn't focused on anything, just listening to the muted thumps of his feet that echoed through the hallways. It was pretty dark, but he didn't mind so much because it seemed to keep him in that dreary state of sleep and that was fine by him. Niles was no way a night owl, but there was no way he was going to miss a game of truth or dare with his good mates. There was a lot of catching up to do after the holidays despite it already being a week. It was such a good idea and he forgot who actually mentioned it, not that it mattered but he liked to think he could take some credit for it. That brought a small smile to his lips as he went shuffling along to the room of requirement, still not noticing that he hadn't removed his fluffy socks and all in all looked extremely dorky. His thoughts were on the fact that no doubt he would be the last there but it didn't bother him as long as no one had started without him.

He finally reached the Room. It was cloaked by a surprisingly modern looking tapestry. His smile that had stayed on his lips the entire journey from when it appeared to now, morphed into a smirk. He definitely knew who came here first, the one girl who seemed to really love all the muggle and modern stuff. Gingerly he pushed past the tapestry and slowly creaked the door open, not wanting to startle the ones inside. This was going to be awesome, and the last clingy remnants of drowsiness seemed to wash away as he entered the room.

"Look out everyone, the fun has arrived!" He chimed, his megawatt grin lighting up his face.

Monty

Monty leaned against the wall in silence, wishing he had that magic map he?d heard so much about in the stories. Not to diss Harry Potter, but anyone and their mother could sneak around at night if they happened to have a map that showed everyone?s location. He knew that the best thing in this situation would be to go into animagus form and post up somewhere. Were he to do that, if anyone passed by they?d just see a raven and probably assume it stuffed.

Of course, then he?d risk getting caught, and possibly getting into a good bit of trouble. Even now he had kept this secret from his closest friends, just in case. It was one of those things, the less they knew the better. Only half jokingly had Monty already made himself ok with the possibility of eventually winding up in Azkaban for some reason or another, and so the less people that knew about his ability to shift into a bird, the better. This was also one of the things that made him nervous about these truth-or-dare games. It meant that he almost always had to pick dare.

After a while, the entrance opened and out stepped Tar, who spotted him and walked over. It was probably best not to talk at the moment, so Monty led them through the halls to the entrance to the secret room, that wasn?t exactly a secret considering it seemed like everyone in the school knew about it. He was surprised the damn thing wasn?t monitored at this point. It worked out. Tar didn?t really like breaking the rules too much. It seemed to get everyone else?s rocks off, though, but it was nice having someone to keep everything at least somewhat level headed.

A few moments later, Monty and Tar walked into the room, noticing a few people there already. ?Mornin? folks,? Monty said, grinning. ?Nice to see our ladies in real clothing, as much as I love our body hiding robes,? he chuckled and walked in.

Celine

Cece beamed at her now done Slytherin themed nails. She felt she had really outdone herself this time. The fumes from the polish, however, where a little strong and she found herself gagging as the heat from the fire intensified the scent. Snatching up her wand from where it had fallen on the ground, Celine muttered a little incantation that sent a cool breeze through the room evaporating the strong scent from the polish and leaving the air fresh. Normally Cece would avoid doing little spells such as the one she had just used, she liked to be more independent and find none magical ways of doing things, but as she was a witch and a student of Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardy she felt she could indulge herself everyone once in a while.

It turns out Celine had cast the spell just in time because a few moments later Niles walked through the entrance to the room of requirement. "Look out everyone, the fun has arrived!" Niles announced to a basically empty room grinning widely. Celine grinned in response and gave a little wave of her hand, "So far its just us, no one else has arrived yet. I was beginning to worry I had the dates mixed up!" It was nearly impossible to not smile around Niles, he was also so cheerful and really knew how to bring a person out of their depression. "But since your here now I guess it wont be long until the others arrive as well." Celine added as an afterthought, getting up from her current seat, stretching out and walking to a different one. Before too many more people arrived she wanted to be sure that she had the seat she wanted to sit through for most of the rest of the night. Who knew how long their little game of truth or dare would go on.

Turns out hardly five minutes passed before Tar and Monty entered the room. Monty with a ?Mornin? folks," and a "Nice to see our ladies in real clothing, as much as I love our body hiding robes,? he was chuckling as he said the last part and Celine grinned in response. "Agreed, and same to our gentlemen friends, its always nice to get out of those damned boring uniforms every once in a while." And it was true, Celine took every opportunity she could to wear muggle clothing, sometimes even wearing them under her robes instead of the horrid school uniform. Plaid, really? She shuddered at the very thought of the plaid skirts and white crisp cotton shirts they were forced to wear. No, she much preferred her jeans and boots, thank you very much. "Do you guys know if anyone else said they would show up or if this is it for the night?" As much as the group loved to get together sometimes it was just impossible to get everyone in the same location.

Tarvel

Tar walked beside Monty as they walked to the Room of Requirements, all the while silent. She didn't have anything to say anyway. Her thoughts were somewhere else though. She had read a book a couple of days ago and she couldn't get it out of her head. It had been about creatures in the magical world. Dragons had caught her fullest attention, and she still could remember one. The Ukrainian Ironbelly, a beautiful white dragon. That dragon was still in her head. She didn't know why, she just guessed she liked its appearance, and beautiful the dragon was. And big for sure. Though keeping it as a pet would be something that wouldn't be possible, though last night she had dreamed about.

She was dreaming that she was standing outside, listening to the birds around her. At once she heard a roar and just a few seconds later a dragon landed before her. An Ukrainian Ironbelly! It was beautiful, white colour. Large claws and teeth, and eyes that looked at her. And she looked in its eyes. The dragon laid down and she climbed on its back. Seconds later they were flying! The wind blew through her hair and everything seemed just amazing. When she looked down everything looked so tiny, and she had thought that it were ants and such. The dragon roared and did something amazing. She hadn't seen her brother for eight years. The dragon landed before a house and Tier came out! Tier, her older brother she hadn't seen ever since she was nine. She got of the dragon's back and hugged him tight. He told her he was proud that she went to Hogwarts. But than, everything went black and she woke up. That night she had been crying and that day she had been just as silent as she was in the beginning.

Tar shook her head slightly to clear the memory. She could feel tears stinging her eyes, but held them back. They were almost there, at the Room of Requirements. She didn't want to walk in crying.

They arrived and a few people were already there. Seems like they were last, which she didn't mind at all. She smiled faintly at everyone and looked around the room. It was warm and she liked it a lot. There was a fire. Tar sat down a bit away from the others as she usually did, and hoped secretly that Monty would sit beside her. Still trying to clear the memory of her dream.

Niles

His grand entrance unfortunately didn't have the whole audience, but it had the person who mostly mattered. There, looking rather comfortable, in the plush chair sat his best friend Cece. He was rather surprised that he had actually arrived before the others, albeit Cece. The whole room was filled with a cosy warmth and Niles had to give kudos to his bestie for coming up with a room that really had everything they needed, and appeared extremely comfy. He also spied a cabinet that most likely was filled with some interesting things for their truth and dare game. She definitely went all out and Niles was impressed. This was looking to be a promising night, if people showed up and they had the right date. Knowing them it wasn't unlikely that they had gotten the date wrong! But either way, they would have a good time together, they always did, it was Niles everlasting mission to always bring the fun.

"Well, I hope not either! But either way, we can still have some interesting times on our own if the others don't turn up, which I think is very unlikely since, well come on, we're going to have a game of truth or dare! How can they even think of missing out?" His voice had that bubbling ring to it which made everything he said have that hint of happiness to it and even if you weren't looking at him you could tell he was smiling. He watched Cece go to a new seat and followed her, plonking down beside her on the now slightly cramped seat. "Scooch over you!" He said while moving her feet from the seat and placing them over his own legs, so that now he was sitting normally and she was more vertical with her legs strewn across him. Just as they were getting comfortable Monty and Tar arrived. Niles raised his arms in a sort of cheer.

"Excellent! More fun has arrived." Now they had both Slytherin and Hufflepuff here, maybe they were getting stricter with the other houses? Ah well, Niles thought, we'll at least see them in classes tomorrow, giving me the perfect opportunity to brag about how amazing tonight is. Before the other pair answered he quickly gestured to the empty seats. "Rest your weary selves on these very plush and comfy seats. Courtesy of Cece." He grinned and gave her a wink.

Monty

Cece was quick to return Monty?s greeting, and he was happy to note that she played a long with him. Niles spoke up before Monty could respond, perky as usual. Monty?s feelings when it came to Niles were never very consistent. Sometimes Monty couldn?t help but get a little motivated about life when Niles talked, but there were a few occasions where it passed through Monty?s mind that Niles might just be a little too optimistic. It would have been annoying if Niles was in denial about this characteristic; however, because the boy was well aware of his own cheerfulness it made him bearable, if not entertaining, to be around. Everyone in the group had their own quirks and was generally well accepted for them. It was a nice friendship.

Besides, overt optimism is far superior than the opposite, Monty thought while watching Tarvel walk over and sit apart from the group. Sometimes that girl annoyed the hell out of him like this. There were only three people other than her in the room and she goes and sits by herself? Now either the group is going to be divided, if he were to sit next to her, or he?d feel like a complete asshole leaving her off by herself and sitting with Niles and Cece.

On the other hand, the way those two were sitting somewhat made Monty consider sitting over with Tarvel, anyway. With Cece?s legs draped across Niles?s lap, Monty didn?t want to feel like a c-block. Even overt optimists were aware of and subject to the guy code, though it was hard to tell if that applied in this situation. Monty couldn?t necessarily remember Niles ever mentioning having feelings for Cece, and the group was close enough that physical contact between its members didn?t automatically mean anything sexual, yet if those two were to ever start dating it wouldn?t be all to surprising.

To answer Cece?s question, Monty spoke up, ?I haven?t really talked to anyone, so I couldn?t tell you.? Fuck it. I?ll go over by Tar and get her to loosen up a bit so that she?s more open to joining in once this game gets going. While often a source of frustration, Tar was Monty?s closest friend at the school. He considered her close, yet Monty wasn?t really one to let anyone in, not even her. When talking about his past, he only gave the most important details, never diving too deep, and he didn?t really talk much about his summers spent slumming it in various places. Tar was not aware of him being an animagus, nor did Monty really have any intention of telling her. It just didn?t feel natural to him, letting people get too deep inside. The young man was well aware of his intimacy issues, yet never sought help for them. It was better, anyway. There was no need to get into romances; they just let to drama and worrying all the time. This isn?t to say Monty was inexperienced with girls, having lost his virginity two summers ago, summer being where Monty preferred to keep his physical encounters with women.

On his way over to Tarvel, Monty stopped right in front of Niles and Cece and made a little motion with his hand, pointing out Cece?s legs over Niles?s lap, ?Did we interrupt anything? Cause we can leave, if you want us to.? It was a joke, but he was also curious to see how they?d react.

Obama thinks Minaj, Carey can fix 'Idol' feud

By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY

FOX

Nicki Minaj, left, and Mariah Carey.

The President of the United States has weighed in on the greatest feud of our time. And by that we mean yes, Barack Obama has commented on the on-set tensions between "American Idol" hosts Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey.

If you recall, during a recent taping of the show Minaj unleashed a slew of not-safe-for-primetime words at Carey; Carey later countered with claims that Minaj threatened to "shoot" her (a claim Minaj has denied).

Naturally, a feud of such magnitude was top of mind when the president called in to radio host Michael Yo's "The Yo Show," and in a display of diplomacy we've come to know well from Obama, the president does not take a clear side on the feud, but he's optimistic everything will be OK in the end.

"Can you repair the relationship with Mariah Carey and Nikki Minaj?on 'American Idol'?" Yo asked.

"I think that they are going to be able to sort it out, I am confident," the president reassured. "I'm all about bringing people together, working for the same cause, I think both outstanding artists are going to be able to make sure that they're moving forward and not going backwards."

Not letting the president get off too easily, Yo asked Obama the hard-hitting question about whether he has a favorite between the two. "Mariah, she's actually done some events for us. I've gotten to know her and Nick (Cannon), she's a wonderful lady. Nicki I don't know, but I've got her on my iPod."

Purported Sony Nexus X smartphone 1 LEAK: Images of a purported Sony Nexus X device uploaded on Picasa

Rumors about Google wanting to release multiple Nexus devices in 2012 have been heard since early May via WSJ, and they keep barging in every once in a while. Not far from a couple of months ago, back in August we?ve heard from an Asian source that numerous manufacturers are working closely together with Google to release their own Nexus device. We are talking here about Samsung, Sony and LG.

Today a couple of photos shared on Picasa by a man named Mutul Yeter which show a purported Sony Nexus X smartphone running Android (likely JellyBean stock interface). We tried to do a check this guy to see if he is related in any way with Google or Sony, but so far no luck, maybe one of our readers can help us out.

As always we advise to take this with a grain of salt as it may be just a well-developed hoax. Or not? What do you guys think?

App lets strangers weigh in on why relationships go wrong

TORONTO (Reuters) - Confused about why a relationship went wrong or the true meaning of a text message? A new web app that relies on the comments of strangers may provide some clarity.

The app, called Impressions, was recently launched on the website Wotwentwrong, which lets users anonymously get feedback from their exes.

With Impressions people can create a timeline of their relationships and mark milestones, such as their first date or kiss, and embed polls to get feedback and advice on everything from the significance of a text to dealing with arguments.

"It's not the sanitized content you get from the magazines or all the online blogs that give you the 'top ten reasons why this happened' or 'five ways to do that'. It's real situations and advice," said Audrey Melnik, the founder of San Francisco-based start-up Wotwentwrong.

"You're doing all of this anonymously so you can really expel those feelings of anxiety."

Melnik said the app was created to help relieve the uncertainty and anxiety that relationships can produce by providing advice on how to proceed in situations that may cause confusion.

"It's also about self-improvement," said Melnik, adding that while many people focus on improving their professional habits, they often ignore their personal relationships.

"People are going on all these online dates, meeting people and dating them, and they're failing for various reasons," she explained. "They're not aware about what they might be doing wrong, and gaining any new skills in how to be better in dating."

Although some critics might argue that divulging details about a relationship online may verge on the obsessive, Melnik argues that it is no different than what happens in daily life.

"Who doesn't obsess about their relationships?" she said. "All we're doing is taking what is already happening offline and presenting it online," she explained.

Another web app launched recently called, HeTexted, also taps into crowdsourcing, the collective knowledge of a group of people. It helps women decipher the meaning of puzzling text messages.

Melnik believes one of the main sources of anxiety in relationships is the lack of communication and cites the text message as the prime source of ambiguity.

"We're not hearing tone, so we lose a lot of actual data," she said. "If you want to have a conversation, you should use something that's more conducive to a two-way conversation -- like a phone."

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? For most of his 30 years as Pennsylvania's longest-serving U.S. senator and prominent moderate in Congress, Arlen Specter was a Republican, though often at odds with the GOP leadership.

He helped end the Supreme Court hopes of former federal appeals Judge Robert H. Bork, who was nominated by Ronald Reagan. Decades later, he was one of only three Republicans in Congress to vote for President Barack Obama's stimulus.

His breaks with his party were hardly a surprise: He had begun his political career as a Democrat and ended it as one, too.

In between, he was at the heart of several major American political events. He rose to prominence in the 1960s as an assistant counsel to the Warren Commission, developing the single-bullet theory in President John F. Kennedy's assassination. He came to the Senate in the Reagan landslide of 1980 and was a key voice in the confirmation hearings of both Bork and Clarence Thomas.

Specter died Sunday died at his home in Philadelphia from complications of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, said his son Shanin. He was 82. Over the years, Specter had fought two previous bouts with Hodgkin lymphoma, overcome a brain tumor and survived cardiac arrest following bypass surgery.

Intellectual and stubborn, Specter took the lead on a wide spectrum of issues and was no stranger to controversy.

In one of his last major political acts, Specter startled fellow senators in April 2009 when he announced he was joining the Democrats. He said he was "increasingly at odds with the Republican philosophy," though he said the Democrats could not count on him to be "an automatic 60th vote" that would give them a filibuster-proof majority.

He had also concluded that he was unlikely to win a sixth term as a Republican, and his frankness about why he returned to the Democratic Party was packaged in a powerful TV ad by his primary opponent, then-U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak, who hammered away at the incumbent as a political opportunist.

"My change in party will enable me to be re-elected," Specter says in TV news footage used in the ad.

The announcer ends the ad saying, "Arlen Specter changed parties to save one job ? his, not yours."

And Democrats picked Sestak, a retired Navy vice admiral, over Specter in the 2010 primary, ending his decades of service. Sestak lost Specter's seat to conservative Republican Rep. Pat Toomey in the general election by 2 percentage points.

Specter rose to prominence in the 1960s as an aggressive Philadelphia prosecutor and during his time on the Warren Commission.

In 1987, Specter helped thwart Bork's nomination to the Supreme Court, earning him conservative enemies who still bitterly refer to such denials as being "borked." But four years later, Specter was criticized by liberals for his tough questioning of Anita Hill at Clarence Thomas' Supreme Court nomination hearings and for accusing her of committing "flat-out perjury." The interrogation, televised nationally, incensed women's groups and nearly cost him his seat in 1992.

Specter took credit for helping to defeat President Bill Clinton's national health care plan ? the complexities of which he highlighted in a gigantic chart that hung on his office wall for years afterward ? and helped lead the investigation into Gulf War syndrome, the name given to a collection of symptoms experienced by veterans of the war that include fatigue, memory loss, pain and difficulty sleeping. And following the Iran-Contra scandal, Specter pushed legislation that created the inspectors general of the CIA, which later exposed Aldrich Ames as a Soviet spy.

But he was not afraid to buck his fellow Republicans.

As a senior member of the powerful Appropriations Committee, Specter pushed for increased funding for stem-cell research, breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease, and supported several labor-backed initiatives in a GOP-led Congress. He also doggedly sought federal funds for local projects in his home state.

In 1995, he launched a presidential bid, denouncing religious conservatives as the "fringe" that plays too large a role in setting the party's agenda. Specter, who was Jewish, bowed out before the first primary because of lackluster fundraising.

Specter's irascible independence caught up with him in 2004. He barely survived a GOP primary challenge from Toomey by 17,000 votes of more than 1.4 million cast. He went on to easily win the general election with the help of organized labor, a traditionally Democratic constituency.

Specter was diagnosed in 2005 with stage IV Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. Announcing the diagnosis with his trademark doggedness, Specter said: "I have beaten a brain tumor, bypass heart surgery and many tough political opponents and I'm going to beat this, too."

"Arlen Specter was always a fighter," Obama said in a statement Sunday. "From his days stamping out corruption as a prosecutor in Philadelphia to his three decades of service in the Senate, Arlen was fiercely independent ? never putting party or ideology ahead of the people he was chosen to serve. He brought that same toughness and determination to his personal struggles."

Specter wrote of his illness in a 2008 book, "Never Give In: Battling Cancer in the Senate," saying he wanted to let others facing similar crises "ought to know they are not alone."

Cancer handed him "a stark look at mortality" and an "added sense of humility," Specter told The Associated Press.

Born in Wichita, Kan., on Feb. 12, 1930, Specter spent summers toiling in his father's junkyard in Russell, Kan., where he knew another future senator ? Bob Dole. The junkyard thrived during World War II, allowing Specter's father to send his four children to college.

Specter left Kansas for college in 1947 because the University of Kansas, where his best friends were headed, did not have Jewish fraternities. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1951 and Yale law school in 1956. He served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1953.

Friends say his childhood circumstances made him determined, tough and independent-minded. Specter considered his father's triumphs the embodiment of the American dream, a fulfillment that friends say drove him to a career in public life.

He entered politics as a Democrat in Philadelphia in the early 1960s, when he was an assistant district attorney who sent six Teamsters officials to jail for union corruption.

Working on the Warren Commission in 1964, Specter was the chief author of the theory that a single bullet had hit both Kennedy and Texas Gov. John Connally, an assumption critical to the conclusion that presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. The theory remains controversial and was the subject of ridicule in Oliver Stone's 1991 movie "JFK."

After working on the Warren Commission, he returned to Philadelphia and challenged his boss, James Crumlish, for district attorney in 1965. Specter ran as a Republican and was derided by Crumlish as "Benedict Arlen." But Crumlish lost to his protege by 36,000 votes.

Specter lost re-election as district attorney in 1973 and went into private practice. Among his most notorious clients as a private attorney was Ira Einhorn, a Philadelphia counterculture celebrity who killed his girlfriend in 1977.

Finally, in 1980, Specter won the Senate seat vacated by retiring Republican Richard Schweiker, defeating former Pittsburgh Mayor Pete Flaherty.

After leaving the Senate in January 2011, the University of Pennsylvania Law School said Specter would teach a course about Congress' relationship with the Supreme Court, and Maryland Public Television launched a political-affairs show hosted by the former senator.

He also occasionally performed standup comedy at clubs in Philadelphia and New York. He played squash nearly every day into his mid-70s and liked to unwind with a martini or two at night.

A funeral was scheduled for Tuesday in Penn Valley, Pa., and will be open to the public, followed by burial in Huntingdon Valley, Pa.

Specter is survived by his wife, Joan, and two sons, Shanin and Steve, and four granddaughters.

No new limited release titles this week, but a half dozen holdovers and a full repertory calendar to compensate. Next week, predictably, there?s a lot of horror-themed special programming.

TOTM in IN Near-Term Scheduling News: Regular readers who have noticed that this column has been posting progressively later in the day the last few weeks may have guessed the reason: I?ve got another big trial coming up. It?s fast approaching, getting ready for it is already cutting heavily into my free time, and after it starts, free time will be nothing but a memory. Next week?s edition will be the last until I get my life back in December.

Note: For trailers, cast and crew, and suchlike follow the title link to the movie?s official website. For showtimes and directions for the non-multiplex venues, follow the links under ?Outside the Multiplex? in the sidebar.

THEATRICAL HOLDOVERS (AND ?RE-OPENINGS?)

English Vinglish- The new Bollywood comedy English Vinglish is the comeback film of Sridevi, a popular star in Tamil and Bollywood films of the ?80s and ?90s. The playful title is a reference to her housewife character?s adventures in learning English. In a fun fact, the teaser trailer featuring Sridevi reading the movie?s Censor Certificate in character (i.e., in broken English) was a YouTube hit. It holds over at the Republic Theaters Georgetown 14 in Indianapolis.

Liberal Arts- ?When his favorite college professor invites him to campus to speak at his retirement dinner, Jesse [writer-director Josh Radnor] jumps at the chance. He is prepared for the nostalgia of the dining halls and dorm rooms, the parties and poetry seminars; what he doesn?t see coming is Zibby (Elizabeth Olsen)?a beautiful, precocious, classical-music-loving sophomore.? Liberal Arts holds over at the Landmark?s Keystone Art Cinema in Indianapolis.

OMG Oh My God!- Akshay Kumar produced and has a (prominently advertised) cameo in this Bollywood comedy-drama, which is adapted from a play about a shopkeeper with an ax to grind against the deities who didn?t protect his store from being destroyed in a tornado. It has one more show tomorrow evening at the Republic Theaters Georgetown 14 in Indianapolis.

The Oranges- An adulterous affair between a suburban dad and his neighbors? daughter- and his daughter?s childhood best friend- is a force for positive life change in this indie comedy. Hugh Laurie, Catherine Keener, Oliver Platt, and Allison Janey star. It holds over at the Landmark?s Keystone Art Cinema in Indianapolis.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower- ?A funny and touching coming-of-age story based on the beloved best-selling novel by director Stephen Chbosky, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a modern classic that captures the dizzying highs and crushing lows of growing up.? It holds over at the Landmark?s Keystone Art Cinema in Indianapolis and opens at the Cinemark Movies 14 in Mishawaka, Showplace Cinemas East in Evansville, Rave Jefferson Pointe 18 in Fort Wayne and Rave Metropolis 18 in Plainfield, and at three AMCs: Bloomington 11, Indianapolis 17, and Schererville 12.

Runaway Slave- This documentary is narrated by a minister and former NAACP chapter president who has become disenchanted with progressivism as a solution for the endemic poverty of black America. It features interviews with a number of well-known black conservatives. Runaway Slave holds over at the AMC Castleton Square 14 in Indianapolis.

Sleepwalk with Me- ?Comedian Mike Birbiglia brings his hilarious semi-autobiographical story?already an off-Broadway smash and a best-selling book?to the screen as writer/director/star in his cinematic debut. Occasionally commenting ruefully on the action (?Remember: you?re on my side!?), Birbiglia plays alter-ego Matt Pandamiglio, a struggling stand-up comedian avoiding commitment with his long-time girlfriend.? It holds over at the Landmark Keystone Art Cinema in Indianapolis and starts at the Cinema Center in Fort Wayne and Yes Cinema in Columbus.
