Editor?s Note: This article is the first of a two-part Q&A from a roundtable in which James Cameron discussed deep-ocean science with researchers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Cape Cod, Mass.

In March filmmaker and aquanaut James Cameron, back from his record-setting visit to the Challenger Deep in the Marinas Trench 11 kilometers below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, announced the donation of his sub, DEEPSEA CHALLENGER, to Woods Hole, where scientists plan to use its cutting-edge technology to help further their understanding of life in ocean trenches.

The first order of business when the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER arrives at Woods Hole in a few weeks: Fit its custom-made lights, imaging equipment and high-definition 3-D cameras on to Woods Hole?s Nereus robotic sub in preparation for the latter?s dive to the 10-kilometer-deep Kermadec Trench?off the northeastern tip of New Zealand's North Island?in February or March 2014. The Kermadec Trench is a kilometer shallower than the Challenger Deep site that Cameron explored, but Nereus?s mission is crucial to understanding the peculiar inhabitants, ecosystem and geologic activity that have evolved in ocean trenches?the planet?s most hostile habitat.

The roundtable discussion with Cameron took place in New York City in April and included: Tim Shank, a Woods Hole deep-sea biologist and lead investigator for the institution?s Hadal Ecosystem Studies (HADES) program; Andy Bowen, director of Woods Hole?s National Deep Submergence Facility; Susan Avery, president and director of Woods Hole; along with a handful of journalists.

In part 1 Cameron and the Woods Hole researchers talk about how the technological advances that enabled the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER to take him to the deepest spot on the planet will unlock new possibilities for understanding life at the vastly unexplored hadal depths, those below six kilometers. The discussion also addresses the upcoming Nereus mission and what Woods Hole hopes to find at the bottom of one of the world?s deepest, coldest trenches. Cameron also describes his experiences piloting the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER on his historic voyage to Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench.

In part 2 Cameron discusses how the era of exploration in the 1960s?both into space and to the ocean?s depths?inspired his career as a filmmaker and, later, as an deep-sea pioneer and science advocate.

[An edited transcript of the interview follows.]

Why are you donating the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER to Woods Hole?

James Cameron: To me, that?s an infinitely better outcome than it sitting dormant until I?m done with my next two movies, and maybe comes to the tech community five or six years down the line when it?s already obsolete or other solutions have been found in the meantime.

[When the dust settled following the March 2012 piloted expedition to the Challenger Deep] my fantasy goal was that the entire scientific community would want to have access to it. Unfortunately the kind of money that existed in the 1960s and ?70s, the heyday of deep-sea exploration, is harder to come by these days. So we had to look for a way the technology could be beneficial to the oceanographic community. And we came up with something that we?re all happy about.

In terms of [future missions for] DEEPSEA CHALLENGER, I don?t think that any of us want to take that off the table. We?ll look at possibly getting it out to sea again at some point and go out and try to find some funding for that when it makes sense. The more immediate goal is to transition technology from the sub into the mainstream of the oceanographic community.

Short of taking the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER out again, how will it benefit deep-ocean science?

Andy Bowen: That?s underway right now. Some of that technology will be transitioned into our Nereus underwater robotic vehicle, which will undertake a scientific survey project in the [Kermadec Trench] using, in particular, the cameras developed as part of the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER program.

Cameron: It?s interesting how those cameras came about. We knew the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER was going to move through the water column rapidly so we would have as much bottom time as possible. But that meant if we wanted to have the camera out on a boom to be able to see the sub and the area around it, that camera was going to be tiny, and I wanted high-definition and 3-D [capabilities]. My previous HD [or high-definition], 3-D submarine camera weighed about 180 pounds, and it went on a 150-pound pan-and-tilt mechanism. Well, all of that was going to have to go out on a boom, and that clearly wasn?t going to happen on a small weight- and space-constrained vehicle.

So I set my engineers with the challenge of coming up with something that was orders of magnitude smaller and had to operate twice as deep as our previous camera system. That puts you off the scale in terms of difficulty, but they built the camera from the sensor level up. [Two of these cameras in a titanium housing weighed about four and a half pounds] We put it on a four-pound pan-and-tilt platform. You could put a couple of these on Nereus.

What else will Woods Hole do with the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER when it arrives in June?

Cameron: My team of engineers that spent seven years building the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER will share their experiences and knowledge with Woods Hole engineers, and vice versa.

I don?t expect a fleet of DEEPSEA CHALLENGERs to be built. That was a very specific vehicle that served a very specific purpose. But if you were able to take the various systems on the sub and abstract them out to a different form factor, you might end up with some of that being integrated into an [autonomous underwater vehicle] for hadal research. Several of those out there going through the trenches starts to give you much better science in return.

I haven?t put any constraints or restrictions on [how the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER?s technology is used]. I think we agreed not to saw up the sub for awhile.

What are the specific scientific goals of the 2014 expedition to the Kermadec Trench?

Tim Shank: We want to take Nereus on a six-week expedition to the Pacific Ocean?s Kermadec Trench to explore part of the ocean?s hadal regions, which are largely unknown. The vast majority of information about these regions comes from two cruises in the 1950s [the Danish Galathea and the Soviet Vitjaz expeditions], which is rather embarrassing. We just have a catalogue with the names of some species that came up in a trawl. In the 2000s there were a couple of cruises that explored hadal depths and brought back some samples, each of which is incredibly valuable. [Sediment samples from the Mariana Trench, for example, have contained highly active bacteria communities even though the environment there is under extreme pressure almost 1,100 times higher than at sea level, according to a March Nature Geoscience report.] The research [also] showed a carbon food supply down in the trenches that we hadn?t known about. [Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.]

There are seven institutions around the world and 10 scientists [involved in the Kermadec expedition as part of the Hadal Ecosystems Studies (HADES) program] who are out to answer six major questions, including what?s there in terms of biodiversity, what they are feeding on and how they?ve evolved in isolation.

Cameron: I think it?s interesting to have an overview of just how little is known about hadal depths in terms of biology and geology. Most of what?s known about the bottom has come from images shot miles up in the water column, and it?s a relatively coarse data set. So you?ve got to get down there and look around and ground-truth it. Very little of that looking around has been done. As Tim said, there?ve been a couple of cruises.

Shank: Foremost, we want to bring back samples and study their use for biotechnology. Based on the hadal samples we?ve seen so far, these animals secrete enzymes that are very beneficial for humans. Some are being used for trials to treat Alzheimer?s disease. Now we?re looking for antibody, anticancer, anti-tumor properties, too. All of this depends on how well you can preserve these animals and bring them up [alive], something we can?t do now. [Living samples have been brought to the surface successfully from no deeper than about 1.4 kilometers.]

Cameron: Their biology just doesn?t work when that pressure is taken away. But the deeper you dive the less equipment you can bring with you. It would take a heavy piece of gear to bring a pressure vessel down to hadal depths [that could keep specimens alive when they are brought to the surface].

To the best of our knowledge right now, what is life like at the bottom of the trenches?

Financing With Bad Credit | Fast Cash Online Payday Loan

For many people with bad credit, one of the financial difficulties they have is acquiring financing. Financing can take the form of many lending instruments including mortgages, home equity loans, unsecured credit cards, and car loans. If you have bad credit and would like to acquire financing, here are some key tips.

Some loans are more difficult to acquire than others. For instance, unsecured loans such as credit cards, store cards, and personal loans are usually the most difficult to acquire depending on how bad your credit rating is. Since these loans do not require collateral, defaulting on them usually means it can be difficult and costly to retrieve any debt.

advance cash loan, payday loan, cash loans without checking account,

Loans such as mortgages, 2nd mortgages and home equity loans are usually a bit easier to secure mainly due to the fact that your home is used as collateral. If you default on your mortgage or home equity loan, the lender can auction it off and usually retrieve any debt that was defaulted on.

If you are planning on applying for financing of any kind, first request a credit report from one of the big three credit bureaus. You will see exactly what your current or previous lenders have reported. You might find out that your credit difficulties are not as bad as previously thought or you might find out that there are discrepancies or problems that should be corrected before applying for financing.

Usually most lenders will charge a higher interest rate, require collateral of a certain value, or include specific conditions in your loan such as income verification or a certain salary per year before approving a loan. It is beneficial for you to shop around and use the many resources such as your bank, the internet and local advertising to find lenders that offer great rates and conditions to individuals with poor credit. You can usually save money in a variety of ways including closing costs, finding a lower interest rate, or receiving a larger loan amount to pay off high interest credit card bills. Just because you have bad credit does not disqualify you from acquiring financing.

Constructive Feedback University Psychological Analysis

Take the transactional focus of each of the confrontations over school policy and compile them into a longitudinal study and you will see the psychosis that is present in the "Americanized Negro's Mind" regarding his assumed pathway toward EQUALITY THROUGH EDUCATION.

The positions taken by the NAACP serve as a key index to this psychosis.

IF YOU THINK TRANSACTIONALLY BUT FAIL TO SEE THE IRONY AS YOU LOOK AT THE LARGER TRUTH BY NOTING THE PATTERNS OF MIGRATION - YOU'D BELIEVE THAT THIS "BLACK FLIGHT PROGRESSIVE" IS MAKING SENSE:

Charles Rousseau wants the change. He moved his family to Fayette County 19 years ago for its highly rated schools and low crime. Its proximity to the airport and downtown Atlanta made it the ideal commute to Rousseau?s executive job with Fulton County government and his wife?s job at Delta Air Lines. He quickly immersed himself in the community, volunteering on the local library board and putting his public policy background to work on other community boards including a school board construction committee that oversaw SPLOST spending. But when Rousseau sought election to office, it was a different story. He ran for the county commission in 2006 and lost, joining about a dozen other black residents who?ve tried over the past 30 years to break through the at-large voting system. ?I lost by a large margin,? said Rousseau, who worked for Fulton 17 years before retiring as assistant director of administration in the general services department.

??It?s a great day and, equally, a sad day,? said Rousseau, now semi-retired, as is his wife. ?It?s sad that it took the court to force compliance on our governmental body, despite efforts to reach amicable compromises on our own.?

ANALYSIS?

COMPROMISE? ?WHAT COMPROMISE?
For YOU To Get A Seat In Office And Thus Be SATISFIED?

You are a CONSUMER of what was ATTRACTIVE to you in Fayette County and what was repugnant about the other school systems.

(This is NOT a "Love It Or Leave It" statement. ?

This is the REVERSE: ?Look at the IDEOLOGICAL THEORIES that are more favorable to you when the RIGHT-WING RESISTANCE is defeated and note how "THE STRUGGLE" is more important to people who think like you than is the COMPETENCY at RETAINING what you prefer when the CONSUMER becomes THE ESTABLISHMENT POWER.

We Need Not Look At WHITE FOLKS Who Have "Flown Away From Mission Accomplished Zones" - WE CAN LOOK AT THE "Black Flight Progressives" Who Move But Need Not Admit That Their Preferred Ideological Distribution Of Governance Has FAILED TO PRODUCE THE CONSUMER CONDITIONS They Prefer)

AJC: Reasons Vary For State's Low Graduation Rates

Comment: ?Despite all of the coverage of the problem school districts in Metro-Atlanta and then the NAACP lawsuit against Fayette County (as well as the TRANSACTIONAL responses to RACIAL INSULTS - the content providers at the Atlanta Journal Constitution have expressed great cowardice at STITCHING IT ALL TOGETHER.

The CIVIL RIGHTS PHARISEES that wield a big stick of intimidation - as they call everyone who disagrees with them "RACISTS" are allowed to retain their veil of OWNERSHIP (ie: run their PROTECTION RACKET) with respect to the Black Community.

While the notion of VOTING RIGHTS permits a constituency to CHOOSE THEIR OWN LEADERSHIP - the MEDIA has failed to pierce this protection racket - identifying the UNDERDEVELOPED BLACK STUDENT who is encamped inside of a school system who's LEADERSHIP IS PLEASING to the Civil Rights Pharisees as a VICTIM of the misappropriation of the CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT - which has been picked apart by opportunist seeking vultures and is now a bunch of hollow bones, floating down the Chattahoochee River.

From The AJC Article:

Riverdale High School in Clayton County had a 2012 four-year graduation rate of 43 percent. Another school in that district, Forest Park High, had a graduation rate of 48.7 percent.

DeKalb?s McNair High ? whose graduates Tuesday were addressed by Gov. Nathan Deal at the Georgia World Congress Center ? had a four-year graduation rate just shy of 47 percent in 2012. And in Atlanta Public Schools, more than a quarter of the high schools whose graduation rates were calculated in 2012 had rates below 50 percent.

In stark terms, that means 2012 graduation ceremonies at those schools included fewer than half of the students who might have marched with their freshman classmates.

IN WHICH DISTRICTS ARE "THE SCHOTT FOUNDATION REPORT'S FINDINGS" MOST EVIDENT?

Now WHERE DO YOU SEE THE LEGAL ACTIONS FROM CIVIL RIGHTS PHARISEE BEING APPLIED?

Are There Any More Questions About WHERE AND WHO The Problem Is, The Force Of Distraction That Is STEALING THE BLACK COMMUNITY'S DEVELOPMENT THRUST?

We See What The Black Quasi-Socialist Progressive-Fundamentalist Racism Chaser VALUES More Than The Competency To Actually Deliver What He Has SOLD The Black Masses Upon For Many Decades.

They Want To Compel "The Blacks" Who They Are Failing To Develop To FIGHT WITH THEM To Protect "The Black Elected Seats Of Power". ?
In The Perversion Of The "Struggle Motion" - The People Fail To See That They FIGHT TO RETAIN THE STATUS QUO.

From The AJC Article

  • 20.1 percent of Fayette?s population is black, with most black residents in the northern half.?
    • Fayetteville, in the northeast, is 24 percent black?
    • Tyrone, on the northwest border, is a third black.
  • Of the 180 school districts in the state, Fayette is one of only 20 with at-large elections for all board members.?
    • ?Significantly, no African-American has ever been elected to the [board of education ]or [board of commissioners],? Batten said. ?This weighs heavily in favor of vote dilution.?

WHY ARE WE FOCUSING UPON "BLACK PEOPLE'S ABILITY TO GET ELECTED" rather than the CONDITIONS THAT RESULT AFTER "Favorable People Are In Power" AND How THE NAACP DOESN'T SUE THEIR FRIENDS IN POWER - REGARDLESS OF THE DAMAGE TO BLACK PEOPLE'S "ADVANCEMENT" That Is Found?

ANSWER - THIS IS NOT ABOUT "DEVELOPING THE BLACK COMMUNITY"
THIS IS ONLY ABOUT DEVELOPING:

  • Progressive Fundamentalism
  • The Democratic Party
  • WITH THE KNOWLEDGE That The "Americanized Negro" Will Go Along, Never Asking "Where Is The Money That We Gave To You For Our Advancement"?

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE FOOL'IN?

Battle

Background

Remedy?

NAACP North Carolina Versus Wake County School Board Wake County School System:
Black 31%
White 52%
District Racial Make Up In Line With State Averages
(Schools Still Segregated Along Residential Lines)

The NAACP Fought Against The Dismantling Of The School Busing Program Within Wake County As They Argued That ALL SCHOOLS Must Share Their Black Kids Poverty.

The COMMUNITY SCHOOLS In The Black Neighborhoods Were Not Conducive To Quality Education For Black People

Rev William Barber - President Of The NAACP Of North Carolina
FIGHT Against The White Right-Wing School Board Of Wake County As They Seek To Deny Black Children A Quality Education BY Using The Argument Of "Spreading Poverty Around Equally".

In Truth This Is To Cover Over The Fact That The COMMUNITY AT HAND Is Incompetent At PRIORITIZING A FOCUS ON Long Term EDUCATIONAL PROCEEDS Sufficient Enough To Break The Immediate Discipline Problems.

The NAACP Continuously Shows That By Generating CONGREGATIONAL UNITY Among Black People Perpetual External Struggle Against The Right Wing - THIS Can Temprarily Mask This Body Of Thought's Incompetence At Achieving DISCIPLINED FOCUS Through Educational Pursuits IN ALIGNMENT With The Need For More "Professional Services Agents" To Be Developed Within The Black Community To SERVICE THE PEOPLE UP TO THE DESIRED STANDARD OF LIVING.

The NAACP Versus Fayette County Georgia?
Fayette County School District Racial Makeup
Blacks: 24%
White 62%
School District Has More Whites And Fewer Blacks Than The State Average

Fayette County has an "All At-Large" Voting System In Which Every Voter In The County Chooses The Composition Of The County Commissioners And The School Board.

This system that has effectively reduced FACTIONALISM by artificially created district boundaries has served the county well when it was a majority White county. ?Today the NAACP sees this system as a VIOLATION OF THE VOTING RIGHTS ACT because it functionally reduces the chances that Black (Progressive) residents of the county will elect a Black (Progressive Democrat) to the county board or school board.

Fayette County has received its share of "Black Flight Progressives". ?As Clayton County and Atlanta Public Schools face problems - Black head of households make use of Internet based real estate research tools that point them toward Fayette County (and Gwinnett and Cobb County) as favorable alternatives for their children's education.

The Fayette County NAACP filed a federal lawsuit against the county and the school board seeking to get its "All At-Large" voting system deemed illegal.

The court found in favor of the NAACP.

The NAACP now proposes a MAJORITY-MINORITY district that swoops across the northern portion of the county and down the western boundary.

The NAACP is loathed to mention that this migraiton of Blacks into Fayette County has more to do with their REPUDIATION of the MISSION ACCOMPLISHED ZONE that they have vacated from (Clayton County, Atlanta, South Fulton, Dekalb County).

Even though what some deem as "The Black Schools" in Fayette (Sandy Creek High School and Fayette High School) have significantly higher graduation rates for their Black students than do the schools that the NAACP are happy with in Dekalb, Clayton or Atlanta - it is the inability for them to elect a FAVORABLE CANDIDATE on the school board that has provoked the NAACP to take Fayette County to court.

(Please retain the nugget of information about how FAVORABLE PEOPLE IN POWER is more important to the NAACP than is the QUALITY OF EDUCATION received by Black kids. ?This is the result that is concluded once all of these transactional issues are stitched together)

The Black Press Versus Gwinnett County Gwinnett County Racial Make Up
White: 35%
Black 28%
Hispanic 22%
Asian 11%
Gwinnett is the largest school system in Georgia and represents the racial diversity that the state is shifting toward.
(Ironically despite being diverse and HIGH RATED ACADEMICALLY - the lack of DIVERSITY IN LEADERSHIP of the schools and county - is problematic to the Civil Rights Pharisees)
The relationship between the "Civil Rights Pharisees Of Metro-Atlanta" and the leadership at the Gwinnett County Schools has been strained for several decades.

The all-White leadership of the county is seen as problematic by the forces that operate under the guise of "Diversity" to insert their voices into power - while ultimately evading culpability for the end results. ?(Yup - I am inserting strong opinion into my "reporting" - just like you do, except I don't claim to be a journalist.)

Several years ago when the Gwinnett Schools superintendent joked that there are not sufficient number of Blacks in Utah to make a difference in the disciplinary records for the school system - the Gwinnett NAACP claimed this to be a RACIST SLIGHT, that rose to the level of TERMINATION.

A few years ago when middle school students were given "Slavery Homework" - math problems infused with references to slavery - the Civil Rights Pharisees packed in their cars from the south side and held a protest march outside of the school in Gwinnett County. ? When they learned that a Hispanic teacher had created the homework sheet they still were not satisfied because the White folks in the Administration should have caught the offensiveness of the exercise.

In a recent two part series "The Atlanta Voice" newspaper did a fly over of the problems "City Of Atlanta Public Schools" and "The Dekalb County Public Schools" to voice their concerns about the ALL WHITE elected leadership in GWINNETT COUNTY. ?Despite the DIVERSITY in the ranks of Blacks, Hispanics and Asians - there has not been a UNITY CONFERENCE candidate to topple the "White trust" upon power.

Beyond the fact that Gwinnett County Schools has a higher rate of BLACK student graduation rates than the "Mission Accomplished School Systems" that "The Atlanta Voice" are most proud of - we need to make special note of the economic prowess of the other allies in the "Unity Conference".

  • The Asian Community in Gwinnett County has a bustling retail, restaurant and cultural center on Pleasant Hill Road and the northern part of Buford Highway
  • The Hispanic Community in Gwinnett County has a similar arrangement on the remaining stretches of Buford Highway, extending down into Dekalb County.

The ATLANTA VOICE can't imagine that for the Asian and Hispanic partners they have something going for themselves OTHER THAN POLITICS to invest so much in VOTING FOR THEIR SALVATION as the journalists at The Voice rail upon them to do.

The Fight Against The "Super White Cities" Of Fulton County That Threaten To Split Off Into Milton County

Dekalb County / Clayton County / City Of Atlanta Public Schools - Our Friends In Leadershp Positions Dekalb County Schools - 73% Black Clayton County Schools - 73% Black Atlanta Public Schools - 83% Black

ANALYSIS?

The Perversion Of "Non-White White Supremacy" As Misapplied Into POWER IN LEADERSHIP At The Expense Of The School Students

I cannot blame the EMBEDDED CONFIDENCE MEN.

The blame must go to the "Black Rank & File" that are allowing the molestation and diversion of their "Black Community Development Consciousness And Resources" as such.

The AMERICAN COURT SYSTEM Is A Forum That Allows AMERICAN CITIZENS To Resolve Their Differences - ACCORDING TO THE LAWS OF THE UNITED STATES.

Within The Black Community Development Consciousness - THERE EXISTS A MASSIVE VOID IN GOVERNANCE - By Which THE MASSES OF THE RANK & FILE, Seeing The ABORTED UPLIFT Of Their Condition AFTER DECADES OF INVESTMENTS Of Their "Black Community Development Hopes" INTO THE MALCOLM X POLITICAL Football Game are compelled to see:

  • WHILE IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU VOTE -?
  • It is MORE IMPORTANT To Know WHAT YOU CAN'T "VOTE FOR YOUR SALVATION" To Achieve
  • Instead You Must Master The Art Of LIMITING YOURSELF FROM OTHER PEOPLE'S EXPLOITS AT YOUR EXPENSE.
  • This Requires The Consciousness To REFUSE TO YIELD YOUR ENTIRE PERSON To A Cause Because The Sober Part Left Out Is Necessary To Keep Watch Over Your Interests

In The Black Community "The 1%" Are The Elected Leadership And The Entertainers Who Advance The Black Progressive Fundamentalist Agenda - Every One Else Is Expected To Live Vicariously Through Their Growth In Power As THEIR POWER Is Sold As "Black Power" - When In Truth It Is OUTSOURCING Of "The Black Community Governance Culture"

In The "Dr King"?Vernacular?- ?Andrew Young was told to stay out of the march so that when everyone else got arrested he was free to summon the forces for HELP in getting the protesters released.

Today's perversion of these terms seeks to?have?all "Americanized Negroes" compelled to VOTE FOR THEIR SALVATION with the ACT OF VOTING as a DEFENSIVE MEASURE - so that the Rank & File never gets around to asking their elected leaders: "Where Is The Money That We Gave To You For Our Development For So Many Years? ?I'ma Cut Someone And Go To The Same Jailhouse That The Civil Rights Leaders Went To. ?You All Are So Perverted That YOU'LL COME BACK TO ME And Get Me To Sign A Voter Registration Card And Vote From Within My Cell Block Because My Rights Are Being Suppressed."

Apple agrees to $53 million settlement for some iPhones, iPods denied warranty coverage

Apple

Documents have been filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California for a $53 million settlement between Apple and customers denied warranty coverage on their iPods and iPhones due to water damage. The case is due to Apple's policy not to extend warranty coverage on devices where the indicator tape inside them showed exposure to liquids, however plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit argued the indicator could change color due to moisture or humidity. Apple does not acknowledge any wrongdoing in the settlement, which is still awaiting approval from the court, however customers with warranty claims denied prior to June 2010 (iPod touch) or December 31st, 2009 could be eligible for as much as $300 depending on the device owned and how many claims are filed. The scenario the plaintiffs cite is just the kind of thing we worried about back in 2006, and will probably remain in the back of our minds if we need to have any of our hardware serviced in the future no matter how much Apple and others work on more advanced detection systems.

Results of EORTC trial 26951 presented at ASCO 2013

A further report on the results of EORTC trial 26951 indicates that CpG island methylator phenotype (CIMP) status and O 6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter methylation as assessed by MGMT-STP27 are the most informative for identifying grade III glioma patients who might benefit from the addition of procarbazine, CCNU and vincristine (PCV) chemotherapy to radiation therapy. Prior results had shown that PCV chemotherapy following standard radiation therapy delayed tumor growth and extended the lives of patients with anaplastic oligodendroglial tumors, a hard-to-treat form of brain cancer.

Results observed in the phase III RTOG 9402 trial, in this case with chemotherapy preceding radiation therapy, complemented the results obtained previously in the EORTC 26951 trial and found that administering both PCV and radiation therapy led to comparable improvements in survival for oligodendroglial tumor patients with specific deletions of genetic material in chromosomes 1p and 19q, but not for patients without the mutation.

Nevertheless up to 30% of oligodendroglial tumors do not have 1p/19q deletion but may still respond to chemotherapy. Analyses of EORTC 26951 and RTOG 9402 suggested that other molecularly defined subsets of grade III tumors might benefit as well.

The new results will be presented at an ASCO 2013 Clinical Science Symposia on Sunday, 02 June 2013 by Dr. Martin J. Van Den Bent of the Erasmus Medical Centre Cancer Institute, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and coordinator of the study. According to Dr. Van Den Bent, "This is further evidence pointing towards a central role of methylation in the behavior of IDH (isocitrate dehydrogenase) mutated glioma and, more in general, of the MGMT gene function in glioma when treated with chemotherapy."

Methylation profiles of 115 patients were conducted using Infinium HumanMethylation27 or Infinium HumanMethylation450 BeadChip kits. (Validation in an independent dataset is required.)

In these analyses, two markers, CIMP and MGMT-STP27 methylation status, were considered promising in being able to differentiate between patients who will and will not respond to PCV chemotherapy. Two other markers, IDH mutation status and 1p/19 chromosomal deletion, had less strength in achieving this differentiation.

The EORTC 26951 intergroup trial was coordinated by the EORTC Brain Tumor Group in collaboration with the Medical Research Council Clinical Trial Unit and supported by Stichting STOPhersentumor.nl. This academic trial was activated in August 1996, closed in March 2002, and included 368 patients in 40 sites in 10 countries: Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Sweden, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

MAYWOOD, Il. - Many patients who have experienced strokes or mini strokes take blood thinners such as aspirin or warfarin (Coumadin) to reduce the risk of blood clots that can cause strokes.

This can pose a dilemma when a patient needs to undergo a surgical procedure, because blood thinners can increase the risk of bleeding. But a new guideline from the American Academy of Neurology advises that it is likely safe to continue taking blood thinners before minor procedures such as dental procedures, cataract surgery or dermatologic procedures. The guideline is published in Neurology, the official scientific journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

"This guideline is expected to be useful to neurologists, primary care physicians, surgeons, dentists and other healthcare providers caring for these patients," said Dr. Jose Biller, chair of the Department of Neurology of Loyola University Medical Center. Dr. Biller is one of nine co-authors of the guideline; three other authors also have Loyola ties.

The physicians evaluated evidence from 133 studies. Among their findings:

  • There's a high likelihood that taking aspirin or warfarin before dental procedures will not increase the bleeding risk.
  • Aspirin is likely to not increase bleeding risk before such procedures as cataract surgery, dermatologic procedures, prostate biopsy and carpal tunnel syndrome surgery. Similarly, warfarin likely will not increase the bleeding risk in dermatologic procedures and invasive ocular anesthesia.
  • Aspirin possibly does not increase bleeding risk for such procedures as retinal surgery and ultrasound-guided biopsy.
  • Aspirin is likely to increase the bleeding risk in orthopaedic hip procedures.

The authors provide three hypothetical examples of how the guideline could be applied:

  • A 65-year-old man who had a stroke one year ago is due for routine colonoscopy screening. Given that the patient may not need to have a polyp removed during the colonoscopy -- and there's only a 2 percent chance of bleeding even if a polyp is removed -- his neurologist recommends he continue taking aspirin.
  • A 70-year-old breast cancer patient who had a previous stroke is undergoing a mastectomy. There is little research on the bleeding risk of taking aspirin before such invasive procedures. So to be safe, the neurologist and patient decide to discontinue aspirin seven days before surgery, and restart it the day after surgery.
  • A 60-year-old man who's had a stroke is undergoing cataract surgery. The neurologist reviews the guideline and finds the risks associated with warfarin during ophthalmologic procedures have not been established with sufficient precision. Nevertheless, the patient would rather face the risk of increased bleeding than risk another stroke. So the ophthalmologist, neurologist and patient decide to continue warfarin during the cataract surgery.

First author Dr. Melissa J. Armstrong began work on the guideline while she was a neurology resident at Loyola. She now is an assistant professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Other guideline authors with Loyola ties are Dr. Jose Biller and Dr. Michael Schneck, professors in the Department of Neurology of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine and Dr. Rima Dafer, a former associate professor of Neurology at Loyola who now is at NorthShore University HealthSystem.

###

The guideline was developed with financial support from the American Academy of Neurology. None of the authors received reimbursement, honoraria or stipends for their participation in development of the guideline.

Hydrogen atoms under the magnifying glass: Nodal structures of electronic states of hydrogen atom directly observed

May 27, 2013 ? To describe the microscopic properties of matter and its interaction with the external world, quantum mechanics uses wave functions, whose structure and time dependence is governed by the Schr?dinger equation. In atoms, electronic wave functions describe -- among other things -- charge distributions existing on length-scales that are many orders of magnitude removed from our daily experience. In physics laboratories, experimental observations of charge distributions are usually precluded by the fact that the process of taking a measurement changes a wave function and selects one of its many possible realizations. For this reason, physicists usually know the shape of charge distributions through calculations that are shown in textbooks.

That is to say, until now. An international team coordinated by researchers from the Max-Born Institute has succeeded in building a microscope that allows magnifying the wave function of excited electronic states of the hydrogen atom by a factor of more than 20,000, leading to a situation where the nodal structure of these electronic states can be visualized on a two-dimensional detector.

The results were published in Physical Review Letters and provide the realization of an idea proposed approximately three decades ago.

The development of quantum mechanics in the early part of the last century has had a profound influence on the way that scientists understand the world. Quantum mechanics extended the existing worldview based on classical, Newtonian mechanics by providing an alternative description of the micro-scale world, containing numerous elements that cannot be classically intuited, such as wave-particle duality, the importance of interference and entanglement, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle and the Pauli exclusion principle. Central to quantum mechanics is the concept of a wave function that satisfies the time-dependent Schr?dinger equation. According to the Copenhagen interpretation, the wave function describes the probability of observing the outcome of measurements that are performed on a quantum mechanical system, such as measurements of the energy of the system or the position or momenta of its constituents. This allows reconciling the occurrence of non-classical phenomena on the micro-scale with manifestations and observations made on the macro-scale, which correspond to viewing one or more of countless realizations allowed for by the wave function.

Despite the overwhelming impact on modern electronics and photonics, grasping quantum mechanics and the many possibilities that it describes continues to be intellectually challenging, and has over the years motivated numerous experiments illustrating the intriguing predictions contained in the theory. For example, the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Haroche and Wineland for their work on the measurement and control of individual quantum systems in quantum non-demolition experiments, paving the way to more accurate optical clocks and, potentially, the future realization of quantum computers. Using short laser pulses, experiments have been performed illustrating how coherent superpositions of quantum mechanical stationary states describe electrons that move on periodic orbits around nuclei. The wave function of each of these electronic stationary states is a standing wave, with a nodal pattern that reflects the quantum numbers of the state. The observation of such nodal patterns has included the use of scanning tunneling methods on surfaces and recent laser ionization experiments, where electrons were pulled out of and driven back towards their parent atoms and molecules by using an intense laser field, leading to the production of light in the extreme ultra-violet wavelength region that encoded the initial wave function of the atom or molecule at rest.

About thirty years ago, Russian theoreticians proposed an alternative experimental method for measuring properties of wave functions. They suggested that experiments ought to be performed studying laser ionization of atomic hydrogen in a static electric field. They predicted that projecting the electrons onto a two-dimensional detector placed perpendicularly to the static electric field would allow the experimental measurement of interference patterns directly reflecting the nodal structure of the electronic wave function. The fact that this is so, is due to the special status of hydrogen as nature?s only single-electron atom. Due to this circumstance, the hydrogen wave functions can be written as the product of two wave functions that describe how the wave function changes as a function of two, so-called "parabolic coordinates," which are linear combinations of the distance of the electron from the H+ nucleus "r," and the displacement of the electron along the electric field axis "z." Importantly, the shape of the two parabolic wave functions is independent of the strength of the static electric field, and therefore stays the same as the electron travels (over a distance of about half a meter, in our experimental realization!!) from the place where the ionization takes place to the two-dimensional detector.

To turn this appealing idea into experimental reality was by no means simple. Since hydrogen atoms do not exist as a chemically stable species, they first had to be produced by laser dissociation of a suitable precursor molecule (hydrogen di-sulfide). Next, the hydrogen atoms had to be optically excited to the electronic states of interest, requiring another two, precisely tunable laser sources. Finally, once this optical excitation had launched the electrons, a delicate electrostatic lens was needed to magnify the physical dimensions of the wave function to millimeter-scale dimensions where they could be observed with the naked eye on a two-dimensional image intensifier and recorded with a camera system. The main result is shown in the accompanying below. This figure shows raw camera data for four measurements, where the hydrogen atoms were excited to states with 0, 1, 2 and 3 nodes in the wave function for the ? = r+z parabolic coordinate. As the experimentally measured projections on the two-dimensional detector show, the nodes can be easily recognized in the measurement. As this point, the experimental arrangement served as a microscope, allowing us to look deep inside the hydrogen atom, with a magnification of approximately a factor twenty-thousand.

Besides validating an idea that was theoretically proposed more than 30 years ago, our experiment provides a beautiful demonstration of the intricacies of quantum mechanics, as well as a fruitful playground for further research, where fundamental implications of quantum mechanics can be further explored, including for example situations where the hydrogen atoms are exposed at the same time to both electric and magnetic fields. The simplest atom in nature still has a lot of exciting physics to offer.

Democrats choose European Union over Great Britain.

And the Democrats don?t even have the common decency to do it in public.

The Obama administration has warned British officials that if the UK leaves Europe it will exclude itself from a US-EU trade and investment partnership potentially worth hundreds of billions of pounds a year, and that it was very unlikely that Washington would make a separate deal with Britain.

The warning comes in the wake of David Cameron?s visit to Washington, which was primarily intended as a joint promotion of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) with Barack Obama, which the prime minister said could bring ?10bn a year to the UK alone, but which was overshadowed by a cabinet rebellion back in London.

Or the basic bravery. Of course, saying in public (i.e., using your name) that you prefer to work with the French or ? God help us, the Belgians* ? instead of the British when it comes to trade deals, to the point where you?d discriminate against the latter, is a pretty good way to end a political career in this country. Which doesn?t make the cowardice any better; merely more explicable.

The short version of what?s happening, by the way, is that the USA and the EU are preparing to try to work out a mutual trade deal; only, there are a steadily-growing number of people in the UK who have come to decide that being linked to the EU is like being shackled to the galley just after it?s been holed beneath the waterline. They want out, in other words; and as the movement that has resulted is threatening to eat into the current ruling coalition?s control of the government, there are Tories in England that are now seriously talking about having a referendum on this entire EU thing. The Obama administration is responding to this by not-subtly-at-all pointing out that they want to make a deal with the EU, not a deal with the EU & the UK. As threats go, this is of course pointless; as the Guardian itself notes, trying to push a trade treaty through Congress is not an automatic exercise. Trying to push a trade treaty will be seen as attempting to punish Great Britain will be entertaining, in a very Platonic Ideal of Dark Humor sort of way**.

Anyway? Barack Obama just doesn?t like the United Kingdom, huh? ? Because I?ve never seen a President so visibly offended at the idea that they have to play nice with the Brits. Heck, I?ve never seen a President that needed to be told that they have to play nice with a crucial ally; most of ?em had the mother-wit to figure it out on their own. And, by the way? If the Democrats don?t like being lumped in like this with the President, they have an excellent opportunity here to correct matters.

Give me a call when they dig up Emperor Leopold?s corpse and burn it at the stake, and he should consider himself lucky at suffering such a fate, the creature.

**Note that I make no observations about the trade deal itself; I have no idea what is in it, it could be marvelous and wonderful and spontaneously generate kittens every thirty seconds. I do, however, know who my country?s friends are. Some of them belong to the European Union. The people who run the EU? ?Not so much.

Gary Hart: Gridlock and Its Causes

There is not a lot of honest exploration of the root causes of what is now widely known as political gridlock. Most political journalism simply reiterates the fact that the legislative branch of government is virtually dysfunctional and deplores the fact.

But this did not happen by accident or in a vacuum. And it will not end until voters tire of it and replace those responsible. Throughout most of American history the U.S. government worked more or less the way it is supposed to, with occasional lurches to the left or the right.

Dysfunction in the early 21st century has its causes. A deep recession caused by deregulation of and consequent predictable speculation in the finance and housing sectors. Two extremely prolonged wars with no clear victories. Large budget deficits caused by tax cuts that failed to stimulate growth and revenues and running the wars off-budget.

This cumulative discontent produced predictable anti-government movements ironically directed not at the political forces that created these policies but at those who opposed them. The journalistic fiction of political "equivalence" is simply that -- a fiction meant to avoid pinning the tail on the elephant and being accused of liberal bias.

Anyone who believes the administrations of Carter, Clinton, and Obama are liberal, let alone "socialist," are living in a dream world. In fact, Democratic members of Congress, including many party leaders, voted for the Iraq invasion and the Bush tax cuts. Any fair assessment of both parties' performance will show that Democrats have supported Reagan and Bush policies vastly more than Republicans now in office have supported Obama policies. In fact, it is the official, publicly-announced policy of the Republican party to oppose every Obama administration initiative, including appointment of cabinet, sub-cabinet, and judicial nominees.

If you are locked into an ideology that government is bad and ineffective, you have a stake in proving that to be the case, despite the election of a president and administration twice by substantial majorities. Whether a gridlock-committed Republican party will pay a price for opposing the will of the people remains to be seen. At the least it is a high-risk political strategy and at the most it is a rejection of majority government and jeopardization of the national interest.

There is mounting evidence that some Republican elected officials are beginning to foresee the cliff over which Tea Party representatives are headed and fear the damage, even destruction, the Republican party might suffer. It is ludicrous in the extreme for new Tea Party members to claim respect for the House and the Senate and then behave in the most disrespectful manner possible. If these radical individuals wish to alter the American form of government, juvenile behavior is hardly the way to achieve it. Anti-government forces must acknowledge that the size and shape of the national government does not change that much when Republicans are in power.

As always, it is up to the American people to decide what they want. But we must make up our minds. We cannot have a government that works by electing those who want it not to work.
