TechSpot: iMac vs. Windows All-in-Ones, Apple Tax or Not?

When Apple updated its notebook lineup earlier this month we were eager to find out how well the new MacBook Air stacked up next to a couple of Ultrabook alternatives. Turns out the so-called ?Apple Tax? wasn?t as much of an issue as Apple detractors often claim.

Now we?re taking a look at another area of the PC market that?s experiencing healthy growth in recent times, comparing Apple?s 27-inch iMac to all-in-one alternatives from the likes of Dell, HP and newcomer Vizio. As we?ve said before, we don?t expect this comparison to be representative of the entire Apple Tax argument, but it will help paint a better picture as we contrast it with our previous findings.

Right off the bat you?ll notice that when it comes to all-in-one desktops there are much cheaper alternatives to Apple?s iMac. But in all cases shown here, going with the base model means sacrificing discrete graphics, and sometimes making do with a less powerful processor or less RAM as well. That may be an advantage if you don't need a more powerful system, but for the purpose of this article we?ve configured each option as closely as possible to the iMac so we can make a fair comparison.

Meier Architecture Engineering celebrates 30 years of service ? Tri ...

?

By Audra Distifeno for TCAJoB

Even through some tough economic downturns, Meier Architecture Engineering is celebrating 30 years in business this year.

Instead of following national trends, the company continues to grow and has remained an icon in the Tri-Cities region.

In April, Meier expanded to the Vancouver/Portland area with a second office ?to diversify our geographical presence,? said President and CEO Steve Anderson, and will serve to grow and enhance the existing business.

Anderson said the business? key to success is that employees believe in what they are doing and love their jobs, which sends a very positive message to clients.

?We are a service industry adding value to our relationship with personal commitment,? he said.

Terry Meier launched the business in 1982 with Rob Bready, Anderson said. Both men had a great attitude and an extremely strong work ethic

?Building something for the employees was a guiding principle and what followed was both community commitment and enduring client relationships,? Anderson said. ?We are still focused around this very strong foundation for our future.?

Anderson said he?s not sure how much money Meier and Bready made when they started out, but he didn?t think it was much.

?Over the last 15 years, our financial performance has swung wildly,? he said.

To preserve employees and future, Meier was briefly acquired by another company called MACTEC after losing a large federal contract on the Hanford site in the 1990s.

?That was the closest we came to closing shop,? Anderson said. ?We lost about 25 percent of our employees and even more financially. The company then made a very strong push to focus on commercial/private work to help balance our risk over the next year and we had some very good success.?

The tactic worked so well that Terry Meier bought the company back after just a year and Meier has maintained its independence since. In mid-2007, Meier sold a majority stake, 61 percent, of his architecture and engineering firm to his employees in an employee stock ownership plan, or ESOP. Three years later, employees purchased the remaining 39 percent of the architecture and engineering company from Meier.

Now the company has nearly 60 architects, engineers and support staff who provide consulting services and have completed more than 6,800 projects locally and abroad.

Meier staff is proud of an array of projects it has been involved in. It has provided full service architectural, civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering and interior design to myriad projects, including: Tri-Cities Community Health (three-story, 39,791-square-foot building in Pasco), Frontier Land Port of Entry (of which over 98 percent of construction waste was recycled), Cascade Natural Gas Regional Headquarters Office (26,000-square-foot brick and stucco building in Kennewick), Cayuse Technologies (a new information technology business center at the Cayuse Business Park, owned by the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation) and Tri-City Business & Visitor Center.

In 2008, Meier received a ?Best Design-Build Innovation? award from Northwest Construction for the Cayuse Technologies facility. The local firm was also nominated for the Seattle AIA Civic Design Award in 2009 for the Tri-City Regional Business & Visitor Center design, a new 14,650-square-foot single-story regional business center in Kennewick.

Following in the tradition of Terry Meier, the company believes in utilizing state-of-the-art technology when it becomes available.

?He was very excited by technology and being on the cutting edge and thinking of what could be,? said Anderson. ?We have tried hard to keep that business strategy going with the latest in Autodesk produces, with the use of REVIT (an industry-leading Autodesk product) and Building Information Modeling.?

Most recently, Meier developed a web-based application database to allow staff to document field construction engineering oversight.

?We can now keep track of all changes, reviews and document engineering construction observations by populating in real time from a standard smart phone, all of these actions,? said Anderson.

This provides more transparency for the client and team members and greater efficiency in collaboration, which saves time and money.

Much of the industry?s equipment is standardized, Anderson said, however Meier was one of the first to utilize 3D modeling and interactive web design tools back in the 1990s, as well as LiDAR technology long before they became required practices ?for capturing existing surface conditions for As-built construction renovation.?

In addition to the diversity Meier offers its clients, a definite boon to the company was when it became employee-owned.

?There is a greater sense, by employees, that this is their business?we have also benefited greatly from our 30-year history. Clients know we are here to stay and can count on us,? said Anderson. ?That is a great comfort to people, especially in difficult economic times.?

Meier currently has 43 active participants in its Employee Stock Ownership Trust (ESOT), of which any employee is eligible to participate after one year of employment. Profits are shared to employee by the company making stock and/or cash contribution to the trust each year based on Meier?s financial success.

?The company is evaluated each year and a value is given to our stock, much like publicly-traded stock,? said Anderson. When an employee taking part in the ESOT leaves or retires, he/she is cashed out.

?There are many federal regulations and plan guidelines (with an ESOT), so this is just a condensed overview,? said Anderson. He maintains more companies could see greater success if they were employee-owned. ?It is not simple to administer, but it has been a great choice for us.?

Meier?s immediate goals include plans to seek diverse federal and state projects that require small business partnerships.

?Long-term, we are focused on steady and controlled growth in the medical, educational, energy and commercial sectors while balancing that with continued Federal services,? said Anderson.

?We?re here for the long haul, so we will continue to provide quality services to our clients and explore opportunities as they become understood,? he said.
?Reflecting on our first 30 years in business, Meier?s executives are deeply grateful to our clients for their confidence in our ability to carry out their design projects,? said Anderson. ?We also want to offer our heartfelt thanks to the employee owners and their families, whose creativity, dedication and sacrifices allowed us to fulfill our commitments while also helping build a strong foundation for future growth within our communities.?

(AP) ? Mitt Romney is focusing on his grandchildren on Father's Day, bringing three of them to talk to the reporters traveling on his campaign plane.

The likely Republican presidential nominee on Sunday brought Parker, Nick and Chloe Romney to meet the press corps that sometimes sits in the rear of his charter aircraft. Romney himself rarely answers questions in such settings.

Parker, 6, said he thinks "Papa" ? the nickname his grandchildren use for him ? will beat President Barack Obama in November.

Romney's grandchildren have traveled with the campaign regularly. Obama's young daughters, Sasha and Malia, traveled with him during the 2008 campaign, though he's generally shielded them from coverage since.

Romney was flying from Ohio to Wisconsin to continue his bus tour.

Fujitsu Lifebook LH532

Among budget-priced laptops, there's a good rule of thumb to always bear in mind: Appearances can be deceiving. Case in point: the Fujitsu Lifebook LH532 mainstream laptop looks great on the shelf, with a sleek-looking design covered in stickers that highlight features like USB 3.0 and Wireless Display. But despite a roster of appealing features, it came up short, with sputtering performance and a short-lived battery.

Design
The Lifebook LH532 has a glossy-black plastic chassis, and with blue LED indicator lights, a glowing blue power button, a black matte rubber soft-touch finish across the lid, and Fujitsu's infinity snake logo in polished chrome. Weighing 4.5 pounds and measuring 1.41 by 13.19 by 9.45 inches (HWD), the Lifebook LH532 is roughly the same size as the Editors' Choice Dell Inspiron 14z (Core i5) ($750 direct, 4 stars).

The 14-inch Lifebook has comfortable soft-touch panels on the plamrest and a spill-resistant keyboard. It's not light enough to use on the go every day, but for those times you may need to work through lunch?or take your work with you to lunch?you can rest assured that it will survive your occasional slops and spills. The soft touch finish of the palmrest also covers the trackpad, which has a raised pattern of dots to indicate the touch surface. It works well enough, and the right and left mouse buttons are soft and rubbery, making them both comfortable and quiet.

The 14-inch display has 1,366-by-768 resolution, which is par for the course, letting you enjoy movies in 720p or tile windows side-by-side for multitasking. Generic stereo speakers may not produce spectacular sound, but when tested with streaming audio (Queen's "Princes of the Universe") the sound quality was clear at all but the highest volumes, though it was too quiet at low volume.

Features
While the Lifebook LH532 has all of the standard features you might expect, like an SD card reader, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11n Wi-Fi, USB 2.0, microphone and headphone jacks, and VGA and HDMI outputs for connecting an external monitor or HDTV, Fujitsu has also added plenty of unexpected premium features as well, like three USB 3.0 ports (one with charging capability), a DVD+-RW drive with dual-layer read and write support and Bluetooth connectivity. For those who don't want to hassle with an HDMI cord, the Lifebook LH532 is also outfitted with Wireless Display 2 (WiDi 2.0), which transmits HD video and audio wirelessly, through an adapter, like the Belkin ScreenCast or the Netgear Push2TV ($99 list).

The 750GB 5,400rpm hard drive found in the Lifebook LH532 is one of the largest in the category?the Dell Inspiron 14z and the Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4830T-6841 ($649.99 list, 4 stars) both offer 640GB?and Fujitsu doesn't clutter it up with a bunch of bloatware, including only a 30-day trial of Norton Internet Security Software, Microsoft Office 2010 Starter, and a Google toolbar. Fujitsu covers the Lifebook LH532 with a one-year warranty.

Performance
Fujitsu Lifebook LH532 The Lifebook LH532 is equipped with a 2.3GHz Intel Core i3-2350M dual-core processor and 4GB of RAM, similar to the 2.2GHz Intel Core i3-2330M CPU seen in both the HP Pavilion dm4-2165dx ($649.99 list, 3.5 stars) and Sony VAIO VPC-EH25FM ($599.99 list, 3.5 stars). With a faster CPU, the Lifebook LH532 beat out both in Cinebench processor speed tests?2.17 points as opposed to the HP dm4 (2.02) and the Sony VPC-EH25FM (2.11)?but without providing the same performance. In PCMark 7 performance tests, the Lifebook LH532 scored 1,802 points, falling behind both the HP dm4 (1,940) and the Sony VPC-EH25FM (1,865), not to mention the Core i5-equipped category leaders, like the Dell Inspiron 14z (2,308).

Fujitsu Lifebook LH532

The difference in performance was even more pronounced in media tasks. In Handbrake, the Lifebook LH532 took 2 minutes 45 seconds to convert our test video from one format to another. By comparison, the similarly-equipped HP Pavilion dm4-2165dx completed it in 2:22, while similarly priced Core i5 systems, like the Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4830T-6841 (1:57), completed the same test in under 2 minutes. In Photoshop CS5 the performance dropped from middling to lousy, taking 12 minutes 16 seconds to grind through a test completed in 5:22 by the slowest competitor, the HP dm4-2165dx. As expected in a system with middling performance and integrated graphics, gaming is limited to the most basic games.

The Lifebook LH532 also came up short in battery tests. It lasted only 5 hours 1 minute in MobileMark 2007, which is reasonable given the laptop's 48Wh battery, but similarly priced competitors pack larger batteries and longer life, such as the 55Wh battery in the HP dm4-2165dx (7:58) or the 65Wh battery found in the Dell Inspiron 14z (8:38).

The slow performance and short battery life of the Fujitsu Lifebook LH532 were disappointing, given the promise of compelling features like a spill-resistant keyboard, USB 3.0, and WiDi streaming. Unfortunately, all the clever features and design in the world can't compensate for poor performance, and the Fujitsu Lifebook LH532 falls short of competitors with similar price tags and specifications. While the $750 price tag of the Editors' Choice Dell Inspiron 14z may be a bit more than the budget-minded shopper wants to pay, alternatives closer in price to the Lifebook LH532, like the Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4830T-6841 and the Sony VAIO VPC-EH25FM provide superior performance, longer battery life, and better value for your dollar.

(AP) ? Biologists are trying to save a threatened trout in southwestern New Mexico from the post-wildfire ravages, even as crews nearby and around the West struggle to contain blazes that have charred hundreds of square miles of forested countryside.

A team used electroshocking devices to temporarily stun the Gila trout so they could quickly be scooped into a net. From there, the fish were being put into a tank to be ferried out of the wilderness via helicopter to a special truck that was waiting to drive them to a hatchery in northern New Mexico for safe keeping.

The first load of trout was brought out Friday and the work would continue into Saturday, said Art Telles, a biologist and staff resource officer with the Gila National Forest.

The fish are imperiled by the wildfire aftermath ? choking floods of ash, soil and charred debris that are expected to come with summer rains.

"When we have hot fire in some of these drainages, that can move ash and sediment after the rains start and that is pretty deadly to trout," he said.

The fish wranglers are focusing on small creeks deep within the perimeter of the Whitewater-Baldy fire, a blaze that has charred more than 453 square miles of the forest and its famed Gila Wilderness. The fire, the largest in the state's history and the biggest currently burning in the United States, is 63 percent contained.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is planning a two-day trip to Colorado and New Mexico as the fires continue to force evacuations, threaten buildings and scorch large swaths of land in both states.

Vilsack will meet with fire managers in Fort Collins on Saturday and will be with U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell in Albuquerque on Sunday.

Crews in south-central New Mexico continued to build lines around a second blaze that destroyed 224 homes while racing through 59 square miles outside the mountain resort town of Ruidoso. That blaze was 51 percent contained.

Authorities were allowing more residents back into their homes Friday. They said most communities could re-open by the start of the weekend.

In Colorado, more than 1,500 firefighters were trying to slow down the High Park Fire, which had consumed more than 84 square miles by Friday night.

Thunderstorms and windy conditions were threatening to develop as aircraft and ground crews tried to snuff out a 200-acre spot fire that erupted north of the blaze. Authorities sent evacuation notices to about 300 phone lines in the area and told other people to be prepared to leave.

At least 112 homes have been damaged or destroyed, authorities confirmed Friday. They said that the number will go up as crews can reach areas to make assessments.

Federal land managers and scientists have said repeatedly in recent weeks that the frequency and size of wildfires are expected to continue to intensify due to a combination of factors, including decades of fire suppression and persistent drought.

The aftermath of these massive fires is also a growing concern, as denuded mountainsides threaten to send soil and blackened debris into watersheds and communities.

Teams of recovery specialists have been surveying the damage of New Mexico's largest blaze in the Gila forest and are plotting out ways to deal with flooding and reseeding. Part of the preparation includes moving the Gila trout.

The trout was one of the original species listed under the Endangered Species Act in 1973. At that time, its range had been reduced to only four streams within the Gila forest. Through recovery efforts, federal officials decided in 2006 to change the trout's status to threatened.

"The burning of some of these drainages here definitely is a concern because they're some of the streams we had worked on to help with recovery," Telles said.

The immediate focus includes trout in Whiskey and Langstroth creeks, which make up one of four genetically distinct lineages of the fish. Forest and wildlife officials are also evaluating whether to remove Gila trout from Spruce Creek as well as federally protected Gila chub from Turkey Creek.

The evacuated fish could end up staying at the Mora hatchery in northern New Mexico for some time, forest officials said. After the fire, biologists will monitor the area to see how much ash and sediment will be washed into the creeks by summer monsoons.

Telles said it's too early to say whether the fire and the aftermath will have any effect on the trout's status.

The decades-long effort to help the trout recover has included the removal of nonnative fish from a handful of streams in the wilderness. Restocking in some streams started two years ago.

"The Gila trout is an intrinsic value to our wilderness. It's part of what people seek when they come here," Telles said. "You have trout fishermen from all over the country who want to come and fish for Gila trout."

Are Cable Companies Trying To Stifle Online TV ... - Internet TV

Many believe that the multi-billion dollar cable companies are trying to stifle internet TV services to prevent cord cutting and keep those big subscriber numbers up. Delusional fantasy? Well, maybe not as it seems that the Justice Department are actively looking at cable companies, and whether they are improperly trying to nobble online TV and video competition from companies such as Netflix,.

Are cable companies unfairly capping online TV?

The news reported by the Wall Street Journal says that US Justice deptartment officials have been talking to several web video suppliers such as Hulu and Netflix, and also have been questioning cable companies such as Time Warner and Comcast about data capping online TV ventures. These Data limits serve to dissuade customers from subscribing as they get hit with a second charge for downloaded data.

The cable companies have come out fighting though, claiming monthly useage caps are needed so that heavy data users (i.e. video viewers) do not overuse the broadband networks and slow them down for others.

However internet TV providers such as Netflix just see the practice as unfair. CEO of Netflix, Reed Hastings claimed that Comcast let their subscribers watch own-brand Xfinity streaming without eating into their monthly data cap, but rivals like Netflix, Hulu and HBO Go do. So Comcast give preferential treatment for their streaming and subscribers are not tempted to cut the cord.

The Journal who are quoted unnamed sources providing the info, say that the Justice Department will also look to see if Comcast?s data policy violates commitments that were made when it brought a majority stake in NBC Universal last year.

It does seem that the big boys are unfairly penalizing online services, but then would Turkey?s vote for Christmas? They will only stop when they are made to stop.

Vizio wants a slice of the Apple: Unveils new Mac-like PCs

Vizio, often known for their affordable line of LCD and LED televisions, launches a new line of Mac-esque PCs starting at $899. Based on the initial reaction of analysts, the new Vizio laptops give Apple?s new MacBook Pros a run for their money. Vizio originally announced their plans to enter the PC industry during the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year.

Vizio has recently expanded their portfolio of consumer electronics devices, as the company previously launched an entry-level, underpowered 8-inch tablet in 2011. During a launch event in New York, Matt McRae, Chief Technology Officer of Vizio, introduced the new line of systems that are designed with consumers in mind. McRae noted how current PCs are mundane ? and rarely put the ?customer first.?

The new systems pair high-quality components with affordable pricing, packaged in a unibody construction that oozes durability. Take one look at these machines, and it?s clear who Vizio was trying to emulate. On a larger scale, sans Mac, Vizio is moving towards minimalist designs in their notebooks and All-in-One PCs.

Vizio leverages their expertise in the television market with their All-in-One machine, which has HDMI inputs, a remote control, and optional Blu-ray drive. Pressing the function key plays into their home entertainment lineup, connecting users to Netflix via their Vizio?s hub. Gamers can also access EA?s Origin gaming portal.

Vizio?s new Air-esque laptops are inspired by IntelIntel?s Ultrabook movement. In fact, Vizio admits that Intel provided engineering resources to help. The systems use the latest Ivy Bridge processor from Intel, which is surprising given Vizio is a relatively no-name player in the space.

Vizio CN15 Laptop

The CN15 by Vizio is geared towards power users ? those who are not satisfied with the ordinary, plastic machines of yesteryear. The laptop features a 15-inch, high-definition 1920 x 1080p display that is powered by an Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 processor. Users can choose from 4 GB or 8 GB of RAM, and all systems ship with an Nvidia GeForce 640M LE GPU. Vizio was generous with the hard disk, offering 500 GB and 1 TB options, in addition to a 1 TB with 32 GB of Flash memory system.

Starting at $899 for the Core i3 model, the CN15 isn?t inexpensive, but it has a premium design that sets it apart from the rest. This modern system has two USB 3.0 ports, Bluetooth connectivity, and HDMI output, in addition to the standard slew of ports. The laptop?s minimalist design consists of a keyboard, large touchpad, speaker grille, and power button. Look familiar?

CT14 and CT15 Ultrabooks

Vizio lives up to its promise of delivering a thin and light notebook with the CT14 and CT15, both of which resemble current Ultrabooks. Its aluminum unibody construction reminds you of Apple, and the quality that goes with it. The systems are built with portability in mind, measuring only 0.66-inches thick. With 14 and 15-inch screens, Vizio?s new Ultrabooks don?t skimp on features, either.

Available with Intel?s latest Core i3, i5, or i7 Ivy Bridge processors, the CT14 and CT15 put the ultra in Ultrabooks, despite a few flaws. Unfortunately, the Ultrabooks do not have discrete graphics, rather it relies on the beefed up Intel 4000 HD integrated graphics. The systems come with 4 GB of RAM and either a 128 GB or 256 GB solid state drive, in addition to two USB 3.0 ports.

Vizio plans on selling their new PCs inside mini-stores, some of which will be featured inside Wal-Mart. Consumers can also get their hands on these shiny new laptops at festivals and other breakout events, in addition to ordering online.

Computer manufacturers are already struggling to compete with Apple in this razor-thin margin space. Do you think Vizio has a standing chance against longtime veterans Dell and Hewlett Packard? Perhaps the industry needs a new ?breakout artist? to shake things up. After all, Vizio beat Sony and Sharp in the television market, perhaps they can do the same to Apple. Perhaps more importantly, can these Ultrabooks fight head-to-head with the HP Envy Spectre XT or Dell XPS 13?

Surviving an Affair: 7 Steps to Recovery ? Relationship Advice Cafe ...

Of all the traumas potentially affecting a marriage or life-partner relationship, infidelity is among the most devastating from which to recover.

While accurate statistics are hard to verify, it?s fair to say that anywhere from 25% to 50% of all partners have had an affair. Data from lawyers shows that about one third of all divorces are caused by an affair.

And a study by anthropologist, Laura Betzig, shows that an extramarital affair is the most common cause of divorce in 150 different cultures including, of course, the United States.

Affairs are costly and damaging. Because there are so many causes and variables contributing to extramarital affairs it would be impossible to create a generalized recipe for repair, survival or recovery.

But understanding why some people have affairs can help provide you with clarity about whether there is hope of recovery and if the suggestions offered here can help your situation.

Most affairs begin with a common connection like work, neighbors, PTA meetings and so on. But people are finding more discreet ways to find romantic partners on Internet sites like Ashley Madison dot com which actually promote extramarital affairs.

Ashley Madison?s sole purpose is stated on their home page and is a registered trademark: ?Life is Short. Have an Affair.? They claim to have over 14 million anonymous members.

Other websites like Match, E Harmony, Facebook and dozens of others provide a tempting breeding ground for those looking for partners outside their relationship.

It?s simply too easy for those who are unwilling to address what?s missing in their relationships to have an affair these days. If someone goes down this path and is found out, recovery is often impossible and partners may never believe they can trust their spouse again.

There?s no doubt that the results of an affair to the victim, perpetrator and other family members is potentially devastating. But getting beyond an affair with a relationship intact is very possible.

However, both partners must agree that taking a close look at not only the transgressor?s actions, but also at what was going on or missing in the relationship prior to the affair is critical if long-lasting happiness is to be developed.

So, if you and your partner are game, here are 7 Steps to Recovering from an Affair.

1. Immediately sever all ties and communication.

Your partner must end all communication with the person with whom they?ve had an affair. This must be non-negotiable and needs to take place immediately.

No attempt to reconcile your relationship can proceed until your partner agrees to completely end all contact. Any equivocation or delay is evidence that they?re not ready to look at or repair your relationship and worsens the injuries.

Unfaithful partners sometimes ask, ?Why should I give up my lover? What if things don?t work out in my marriage?? Because they chose to take a huge risk when they started their affair, the offender must be willing to take the risk on your relationship.

If not, repair won?t happen.

2. Honesty.

The perpetrator of the affair must answer any and all questions and apologize over and over. Having and expressing honest remorse must be part of the equation.

Secrets and withholding information after an affair deepens the mistrust and does nothing to rebuild it.

Even though hearing some of the details may hurt, the risk of not revealing information means that if some day new details emerge, the wounds of mistrust will come back as fresh as ever.

Being open and honest means making all computers, e mail and phones accessible. If not, there?s something to hide and rebuilding real trust isn?t possible.

3. Understanding and empathy are required by everyone involved for as long as it takes ? recovery can take anywhere from months to years.

If there?s a sincere commitment to rebuilding the relationship, understanding what went wrong and working to rebuild trust must be present every day.

Listen to your partner?s feelings and accept them unconditionally. Feelings are not negotiable. They can change, but only when true acceptance and empathy exist.

As hard as it might be, listening and acceptance must occur if there?s any hope of repair. Blaming and defending is a murky dynamic and should be avoided.

4. Expect strong emotions and questions at any time.

Denial of your partner?s feelings or stating, ?Let?s not talk about it again,? is not an option. Extremely strong emotions can flare up at any time and can be triggered by an event, a movie or practically anything else.

As long as the same gory details aren?t rehashed over and over, it?s fair and understandable that your partner express their feelings.

They need to feel free to ask questions until trust is restored. When ready, moving forward should also mean both parties are ready to explore what, if anything, the victim contributed to allowing a disconnection deep enough to have their partner go elsewhere for an emotional connection or sex.

It?s easy to point a finger at the one who had the affair. But it?s important that both parties together and sometimes individually, have deep, honest introspection before repair can take place and solidify.

If details of the affair that were already disclosed are brought up over and over again, then a gentle, understanding response that the information about the number of times and the precise activity engaged in was already revealed should be mentioned.

Give sincere, gentle and empathic assurance that nothing else is being hidden and apologize.

5. Never ever blame the wronged partner for your affair.

No matter how ignored you may have felt, no matter what you think your partner may have done to make you stray, if you go down the road of blame you will likely end up on it alone.

You were the one who chose to cheat instead of openly exploring what was missing before you cheated. If you attempted to talk about the problems before you had an affair and were rejected, then professional help was needed.

If professional intervention was rejected, then honest consideration of leaving the relationship was needed ? not an affair. There are cases where the cheater may have an addiction, a personality disorder or other mental health problem.

If these can be ruled out, and extreme caution not to blame the victim is exercised, looking at problems that existed before the affair began has to be part of the repair process.

Only then can deeper mutual understanding and trust evolve. Without understanding what the disconnection was before the affair and what role ? if any ? the cheated-on partner played in the feelings of disconnection, a long-lasting connection won?t develop.

It is almost always appropriate to explore what was missing in your relationship and how it can be improved. But putting these problems in the context of blaming your partner is almost certain disaster.

Realize that trying to do all this without professional help is a huge risk. Most people are just not equipped to explore and negotiate this kind of difficulty without a therapist. There are many to choose from so do your research and get some help.

6. Patience is required.

Approximately 65 percent of all couples who divorced said they wished they tried harder before they made the decision to divorce. Hindsight is, well . . . you know.

Forgiveness and trust can only evolve in time if you do the hard work, but they cannot be forced or demanded. Like a serious physical injury, there may always be residual pain and recall of the events and injuries.

Expect it and be patient and understanding when it occurs ? forever. Long-lasting repair and recovery depend on this.

7. Continue your life together.

Unless you?ve been forced to separate (which can sometimes be very helpful even though painful), continuing your life together is critical. Try to limit the time for talking about the affair to 30 to 45 minutes.

Talking about something as traumatizing as an affair for longer than that can wear out anyone. The same goes for pre-existing issues.

Try to put a time limit on talks and continue your lives. Also, getting everyone else?s opinion won?t solve anything ? keep it between yourselves.

If you need to talk to someone else, talk with a therapist. Few people whose relationships suffered an affair can fully recover without a therapist?s involvement.

Spending at least some time together is essential ? it can?t be none. Stopping your life until, ?everything goes back to normal,? should not be an option.

There is no going back and there is no normal. There is only what was, what is and what you plan and work toward for your future.

Remember, about 65% of all partners who divorced said they wished they?d tried harder to reconcile. So before bailing out, it?s important to take steps to rescue the commitment of your marriage or life-partnership.

If you feel hopeless about moving past the affair, a professional counselor should be consulted ? most couples who?ve suffered an affair need professional assistance.

Taking the time to do the hard work and having plenty of patience can make the difference between staying together and splitting up. And after all, if you work things out, wouldn?t the time and effort invested to creating a much stronger bond be worth it?

Through The Fire: An Ex-Spouse Is Just a Friend You Haven't Met ...

Y?all, this is a very special edition of Through The Fire, because the author is a friend and one of my favorite writers on the internet ? Jen from The Trephine???and also because her post is one I truly and honestly want *everyone* to read: married, divorced, or otherwise. I think it?s just that important and awesome. Please to enjoy.

*

Through The Fire is a series of reader submissions. It offers people a safe, anonymous place to tell their personal stories of separation and divorce, with the intention of fostering empathy and compassion around the shared experience of having a marriage fail. If you would like to submit an original, unpublished story to this series,?click here. Today?s guest post is by Jennifer Gilbert.

through the fire Through The Fire: An Ex Spouse Is Just a Friend You Havent Met Yet

The day I got divorced, my soon-to-be ex-husband and I rode to the courthouse together. In his car, Jeff and I were amiable enough, if a bit nervous about what getting really, truly, officially divorced would feel like.

I stood in front of the judge, next to my much wealthier ex, and reassured His Honor that no, I didn?t want any money, and yes, I was sure.

With that, our divorce was declared final, and as we turned and headed out the door, Jeff strode briskly away from me and called over his shoulder, ?You should have asked the judge for cab fare, BITCH,? as he left me at the courthouse to fend for myself.

I trotted after him in the hallway to catch back up, and then we laughed and went to lunch. We did that because Jeff and I are those people ? we are your dinner-party anecdote. We are your proof that it can be done. We are the little divorced couple that could.

****

After we separated, we lived on opposite sides of the country for a number of years, but these days, as a result of sheer coincidence and Jeff?s nomadic lifestyle, he lives an eight-minute walk from me. I have keys to his apartment and often let myself in to take care of his rabbit (our rabbit, actually, adopted years before we split up) while he?s away. Yes, it is strange to routinely open his door and walk into his empty home and see some of our old things living their new lives, to open cabinets with my dishes stacked in them and to sit on my old couch. No, I haven?t unscrewed all of his lightbulbs or replaced any of his shoes with a smaller but otherwise identical pair. I haven?t even dipped his toothbrush in anything at all, much less anything deeply unsavory or conducive to hepatitis.

I did once paw through all of his possessions while peering through the splayed fingers of my other hand, but I was experiencing a dire need for duct tape and it couldn?t be helped.

We trade our old possessions back and forth; he needed my snowboard so often that I eventually just gave it to him. He borrowed my car for a road trip last year and returned it to me detailed and with a full tank of gas. We have dinner now and again, though not particularly often, as we?re both quite busy and both cognizant of the fact that boundaries are healthy. We did go to Spain together once, in an opportunity too good to turn down. (We tried to sleep on our respective twin beds, but had to swap in order to be on the right ?side.?) When we do visit now, we often sound like cousins or fraternity brothers: Above all else, I simply want to know how everyone is doing. I encourage him to date nice girls, and he always makes it clear that my boyfriend is invited to dinner.

Jeff is not the first person I would call in a crisis, nor should he be. But I know that if I really and truly needed him, he would do what he could to help ? if not as a nod to me, as a nod to my family, to my father and mother, to all of the people who once watched us promise to take care of one another.

We are inspiring to some and quite controversial to others. People tell us that our relationship is unnatural, though I?m not sure how. I guess mortal enemies are ?natural? in the same way that picking lice off one another or gnawing your way through your newborn?s umbilical cord is natural, but I would hope that modern society would be better at grasping the logical disconnect between ?She was my favorite person in the world? and ?I hate her guts and never want to see her again.?

I think a lot of people decide that we must simply not have had very severe issues as a married couple, the same way that your ego forces you to assume that anyone skinnier or richer or happier than you are is also luckier than you are. Sometimes those people really are luckier, and sometimes they?re not. All I can tell you is that we had our own very serious problems, that our decision to divorce was an emotionally devastating one for both of us, and that diplomacy was incredibly challenging in those first few months. You can believe me, or not, but the gory details are no one?s business, and we agreed long ago to keep them out of the public eye in the name of preserving each other?s reputations and keeping our mutual friends and family members from feeling as if they have to choose sides.

The societal and personal benefits of peace ? not peace as some kindly Jesuslike selfless gesture but as something we pursue for our own sakes, for our own well-being and health ? are not undocumented. Even back when humans were still hacking at one another with hatchets, we could see the appeal, which is why we literally buried those weapons in a ceremonial truce every once in a while, though admittedly not as often as we could have.

Even if it?s difficult to imagine yourself in my situation, it is worth your while to try. The divorce rate is ? well, everyone knows what it is.

I haven?t witnessed much of a cultural response to that notorious statistic beyond a lot of pearl-clutching and insisting that you guys, we all like, REALLY need to start staying married. These people repeatedly remind us that marriage requires a lot of hard work and commitment, in case we?re all imbeciles who have foolishly assumed it?s cool to treat our marriages with the same lax approach we took toward the goldfish we won at the carnival when we were six. The movement toward the preservation of marriage is as vehement and generally ineffective as ever ? though I?d argue it does sometimes keep really vulnerable men and women in abusive relationships. Meanwhile, the movement toward friendly divorce is generally seen as blasphemous and culturally reckless, just like those hellbound liberals who keep offering free condoms to teenagers, which of course only encourages them. One look at that prophylactic tube being rolled down the shaft of a banana is all it takes to erode the otherwise steadfast willpower of teenagers, driving them past the point of no return and into a lustful frenzy that will consume our nation. Everyone knows that.

I wish the movement toward learning to live with divorce were louder. I wish it could compete with the ?divorce is not an option? folks, who seem not only painfully unfamiliar with the legal system (where divorce is, I assure you, absolutely an option), but also blissfully unaware that sometimes, people leave their spouses, and those left behind get no say in the matter, and it would be lovely if society would stop traumatizing them even further by judging the everloving shit out of them.

The expectation for, pressure toward, and societal support for amicable divorce needs to get stronger. I would argue that few issues are so culturally pressing for our generation?s children ? not to mention our generation?s poor friends who are caught in the middle and unsure of which of us they?re supposed to invite to dinner parties ? as our society?s profound need to figure out how to get over ourselves and get the fuck along, for all our sakes.

This isn?t just some hippie notion that I cobbled together out of idealism, naivete, and unicorns. I have personally seen how ill-equipped we are as a society to cope with divorce and how damaging that is. I worked as a legal assistant and spent my days watching people do horrible things each other. Divorcing someone who hates your guts can cost you thousands and thousands of dollars. It can trap you geographically. It can consume your schedule. It can drain you in every way possible.

I once read that litigation is like making love to an 800-pound gorilla: you are not finished until it is finished. I have it on good authority that this is true.

I managed expensive, tearful mediation sessions over Tupperware. TUPPERWARE. Between two grown adults who were unwilling even to speak to one another. All because we as a society are not very good at coping with, if you will excuse my crass way of putting it, epic romantic butthurt.

I happened to hold this job while in the thick of my own separation. Let me tell you, it puts things in perspective. When you walk down the street to the courthouse every day to file piles and piles of dead trees dedicated to other people?s bitter diatribes, you realize how exhausting and expensive it is to have enemies. You spend your days on the phone listening to the rants of people who are eaten up by it, who can?t stop railing against what this person has DONE to them and is DOING to them and it?s not FAIR, and you see so clearly that no one wins except the lawyers. You realize how ridiculous it really is to find someone else?s existence so intolerable that you are willing to sacrifice your very happiness just to punish them ? or to become so entitled to your own customized universe that you think it?s perfectly reasonable to expect that person to get off your lawn, stay away from your Internet, waive all claims to your friends, give up their children, and maintain a 100-yard distance at all times or face the legal consequences, just in case anyone had any doubt of the depth of your disappointment in them.

Like it or not, divorcing people, you are part of a community that, thanks to technological advances like Facebook, gets more intimate every day. Like it or not, you are going to have to learn to share that community with someone who not only let you down, but also proceeded to have the audacity to continue being alive. Some people have all the nerve, seriously.

If you want your hypothetical or your very real divorce to be as healthy as something like this can be, you have to do a few things, and a few of them have to happen very early on.

If it?s too late for you, tell your friends, okay?

REFUSE TO WED THE BITTER
Marry a man (or woman) who has a healthy, mature attitude toward exes, someone who is capable of not taking even the most devastating romantic wounds too personally. Marry a guy who accepts that if another person didn?t want to be with him, it was probably for the best that everyone went their separate ways. If his every ex is described as a sack of crap who betrayed him by callously breaking his heart, you need to RUN, okay? I cannot put enough syllables in that directive: RU-HUH-HUH-UN. It absolutely takes two.

I cannot tell you how often someone tells me they wish they had my divorce, but the other person simply will not speak to them (or worse).

So if you want a chance at a good divorce, prevention is everything. Marry the guy who will still write a professional letter of recommendation for an ex trying to get back on her feet. Marry the woman who mailed him his favorite sweatshirt when she found it hidden in the back of the closet, months later. Marry THOSE people all you want. Marry them ten times! The worst you will suffer is a couple hundred dollars in court costs. Well, that, and the emotionally flaying loss of your innocence as you arrive at the demoralizing realization that white dresses and really nice centerpieces, no matter how carefully you chose them on Pinterest, do not actually conjure a magical spell that will protect your relationship from much of anything ? nor was your relationship really all that special in the first place, bee tee dubs.

But that soul-crushing denouement only happens in the first divorce. I hope.

ARRIVE AT A PRE-PARENTING AGREEMENT
If you have children, have them with someone who is going to put those children first ? someone who understands that children deserve a team of parents who are willing to give them not only a loving atmosphere, but a united, consistent approach to raising them. Someone who understands that, unless you are an actual toothless, bank-robbing crack whore who poses a very real danger to your offspring, you have rights to your children that no amount of romantic devastation should be able to dissolve.

Nothing complicates a divorce like children. Have them with someone who is intellectually and emotionally capable of enduring that complexity with a relative amount of grace. Talk about custody. Talk about what would be important to you if you were raising a child with someone you were no longer in love with ? religion? Location?

I have no idea why pre-parenting agreements aren?t a legal standard ? I?ve watched parents spend their life savings and compromise their own children?s futures in order to arrive at an accord that they could have laid out in advance much more easily. No one likes thinking about divorce before their children even exist, but it?s even less fun to think about when the time comes and you?re too irritated with each other to agree on anything.

JUST SHUT UP ABOUT IT ALREADY
Table the topics that don?t matter anymore. The time to lay your hurts and objections at the other person?s feet have passed. You?re breaking up. If you couldn?t solve it when you were striving to save your marriage, you certainly aren?t going to solve it now ? not only that, but now that you no longer share a hamper, it?s irrelevant which of you did all the laundry and which of you was a lazy good-for-nothing who only ever had clean underwear because of you, AHEM.

It?s nice if everyone can apologize sort of generically in the name of friendship, but the two of you do not have the same version of events. You are not historians, and perfect accord is not a requirement. You?re 100%?right, and he or she is 100% wrong, and you were horrifically maligned?despite your flawless performance as a spouse, OBVIOUSLY, but other?people are surprisingly unreceptive to testimonials that make them sound like assholes. Yeah, I don?t get it either.

Even perfect people like us are chronically misunderstood sometimes. Give it up. Be misunderstood. It won?t kill you, and the truth doesn?t matter much now to anyone but you, not in any practical way.

RECOGNIZE WHAT YOUR ARGUMENT IS REALLY ABOUT
I mean, it could be about Tupperware. It could be. Maybe you just really love Tupperware. It could also be about the fact that he cheated on you with your whore of a Pilates instructor, though.

When you are experiencing loss, you will cling to anything, including ?priceless? mementos that you hadn?t so much as thought about in years. If you can?t acknowledge what you?re really angry about and remind yourself that profound loss is an inherent part of this experience, you?ll camp out on any battleground you can find whether it?s really going to make you feel better or not. Don?t do that, okay? It?s expensive. New Tupperware is much cheaper.

ACCEPT THE AWKWARD
Don?t just accept the awkward. EMBRACE the awkward, because oh man, this is going to be so fucking awkward. Remember that time you dropped your box of condoms while standing in the grocery-store aisle, and someone picked them up for you, and that someone turned out to be your boyfriend?s dad? That?s nothing. You haven?t dragged a solitary index finger across the SURFACE of awkward until you decide to reshape your marriage into a functional post-divorce relationship that society is
willing to accept.

Ever enjoyed a friendly get-together in order to split up your wedding pictures? How about extending an olive branch by inviting your ex to the family Christmas even after you?ve separated and are both dating someone else, so you can watch everyone stammer and stare at the tablecloth as they try to adjust to this new reality? How about bring up this unconventional relationship to dates and explaining that your baggage comes with the deal?

If you think that the first time I saw my ex leaning on my fence and my boyfriend standing in our yard talking to him, my brain didn?t absolutely sneeze itself out my ears in a gray mist, you are overestimating how zen I could possibly ever manage to be.

But awkwardness is necessary, and awkwardness will not actually catch you on fire despite your firm belief to the contrary, and awkwardness is STILL vastly preferable to mediated Tupperware fights. Trust me.

We did as much of the negotiating as we could ourselves before we called the professionals. By the time we arrived at the lawyer?s office, we had officially divided everything that could be considered mutual property. Retirement accounts had been split in half, I had taken over the title on the car, and so on. We had worked on our relationship and navigated some very terse moments and arrived at a good place. It had taken two years, but we had set ourselves up for the easiest divorce that is legally possible.

We entertained our lawyer with the slapstick routine we produce together when we?re nervous, and we asked whether we could get divorced on our eighth anniversary ? you know, just for a nice neat ending. She was flabbergasted by our dynamic, but she did seem to enjoy the whole thing, even serving as our divorce photographer. We had originally joked that we would get official divorce pictures ? images of us sitting at opposite ends of a beautiful park bench with our arms crossed and our chins jutting out, perhaps ? but we never made the time.

She did snap this picture of us, though, right under the Domestic Relations Court sign:

Jens wedding day Through The Fire: An Ex Spouse Is Just a Friend You Havent Met Yet

Plenty of people were getting married at the courthouse that day; apparently they do those right before they do all the divorces, because apparently the court enjoys delivering a little poignancy with its decrees. It was easy to tell which was which, of course. The soon-to-be-newlyweds were nervous and clingy and giggly, and the divorcing people were slouched in chairs on opposite sides of the hallway, not speaking to anyone, staring at the floor.

?I feel like I?m at a middle-school dance,? I whispered to Jeff, gesturing to the two rows of gender-segregated wallflowers.

?Speak for yourself,? he muttered back. ?This is a great place to find single chicks on the rebound.?

When it was our turn in line, our elderly, sweet bailiff initially mistook us for one of the marrying couples until he saw that we already had the same name. We reassured him for a moment or two that there was nothing to be depressed about, explaining our overall philosophy and telling him we were proud to be different, that we had worked hard to be different.

?It?s too bad you two couldn?t have made it,? he said, with that touch of sadness we always see in people when we talk to them about our experiences, even when everyone is trying to keep the mood light. I?ve accepted that sadness, especially in myself, and it?s all right.

?Well ? maybe we did,? I said. ?Maybe you just have to redefine making it.?

I really do believe that we can.
