Diamond catalyst shows promise in breaching age-old barrier

June 30, 2013 ? In the world, there are a lot of small molecules people would like to get rid of, or at least convert to something useful, according to University of Wisconsin-Madison chemist Robert J. Hamers.

Think carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas most responsible for far-reaching effects on global climate. Nitrogen is another ubiquitous small-molecule gas that can be transformed into the valuable agricultural fertilizer ammonia. Plants perform the chemical reduction of atmospheric nitrogen to ammonia as a matter of course, but for humans to do that in an industrial setting, a necessity for modern agriculture, requires subjecting nitrogen to massive amounts of energy under high pressure.

"The current process for reducing nitrogen to ammonia is done under extreme conditions," explains Hamers, a UW-Madison professor of chemistry. "There is an enormous barrier you have to overcome to get your final product."

Breaching that barrier more efficiently and reducing the huge amounts of energy used to convert nitrogen to ammonia -- by some estimates 2 percent of the world's electrical output -- has been a grail for the agricultural chemical industry. Now, that goal may be on the horizon, thanks to a technique devised by Hamers and his colleagues and published June 30, 2013 in the journal Nature Methods.

Like many chemical reactions, reducing nitrogen to ammonia is a product of catalysis, where the catalytic agent used in the traditional energy-intensive reduction process is iron. The iron, combined with high temperature and high pressure, accelerates the reaction rate for converting nitrogen to ammonia by lowering the activation barrier that otherwise keeps nitrogen, one of the most ubiquitous gases on the planet, intact.

"The nitrogen molecule is one of the happiest molecules around," notes Hamers. "It is incredibly stable. It doesn't do anything."

One of the big obstacles, according to Hamers, is that nitrogen binds poorly to catalytic materials like iron.

Hamers and his team, including Di Zhu, Linghong Zhang and Rose E. Ruther, all of UW-Madison, turned to synthetic industrial diamond -- a cheap, gritty, versatile material -- as a potential new catalyst for the reduction process. Diamond, the Wisconsin team found, can facilitate the reduction of nitrogen to ammonia under ambient temperatures and pressures.

Like all chemical reactions, the reduction of nitrogen to ammonia involves moving electrons from one molecule to another. Using hydrogen-coated diamond illuminated by deep ultraviolet light, the Wisconsin team was able to induce a ready stream of electrons into water, which served as a reactant liquid that reduced nitrogen to ammonia under temperature and pressure conditions far more efficient than those required by traditional industrial methods.

"From a chemist's standpoint, nothing is more efficient than electrons in water," says Hamers, whose work is funded by the National Science Foundation. With the diamond catalyst, "the electrons are unconfined. They flow like lemmings to the sea."

While the method was demonstrated in the context of reducing nitrogen to a valuable agricultural product, the new diamond-centric approach is exciting, Hamers argues, because it can potentially fit a wide range of processes that require catalysis. "This is truly a different way of thinking about inducing reactions that may have more efficiency and applicability. We're doing this with diamond grit. It is infinitely reusable."

The technique devised by Hamers and his colleagues, he notes, still has kinks that need to be worked out to make it a viable alternative to traditional methods. The use of deep ultraviolet light, for example, is a limiting factor. Inducing reactions with visible light is a goal that would enhance the promise of the new technique for applications such as antipollution technology.

Epson TW550 Gaming Projector Review - The Worlds Best Video ...

On the 14th of February this year I received quite the surprise? I was robbed. They stole my pretty 42? Plasma and since my insurance is, shall we say, non existant I am now forced to replace it and have been trying to save up the cash and make a decision on what to get.

Personally I have always been intrigued about having a projector instead of a TV but the wife was adamant that we weren?t having some faded picture instead of a real TV. Then as luck would have it I was offered the opportunity to review the Epson TW550 Gaming and Movie projector.

And with that I was soon sitting in my lounge with this beauty next to me.

And for the rest of us who only really care about the experience then let?s carry on.

My biggest worry with a projector was that I?d need a dark room to really make it work well and as my lounge has no door but rather an archway into the rest of the house and my curtains aren?t black, so I was a little worried.

I shouldn?t have been. The brightness of the projector is well beyond what I expected. You can quite easily watch TV with the curtains open or with the lights on at night. Granted it?s not as crystal clear with a well lit room but it still works well and that was a pleasant surprise.

Movies

But this projector really starts to shine when the sun goes down and you switch off the lights. I rented some HD TV series from iTunes and sat down for a night of glory. It?s hard to put into words the experience of having your own personal high definition cinema in your house. The 3 metre wide picture was crystal clear and gorgeous.

Grabbing a box of popcorn and snuggling up with the family made it feel like we had rented out a cinema and were living the life of the rich and famous. Unfortunately we noticed a problem pretty quickly though. the iPad has no optical out and neither does the projector which meant the sound was being played through the small speakers in the projector. They manage to do the job pretty well but it is definitely a weak point for this projector.

productimage

Sports

Next up I plugged the projector into my HD PVR and started watching some football games and Formula 1. Now the PVR does have an optical out and with that connected to my surround sound, cold beer in hand and the HD sport beaming onto the wall I felt I was in the stadium and experiencing the depression of yet another Liverpool loss with my extended family in the stadium.

I even got up of the couch and stood next to Gerrard on the pitch? but then I got in the way of the beam and everyone shouted at me.. but hey I?ve done something most Liverpool fans would give their left leg for.

I didn?t notice any ghosting or blurring on the screen even with the fast pace of Formula 1 or the ball being blasted into the back of the net. This is easily the best way to watch sports.

Games

And yes do you really think I?d have a 3 metre screen and not play games?

First up I had to preview Gunslinger which is an on rails(ish) shooter set in the wild west. The huge HD screen looked awesome but it did take some time to get used to how far apart the bad guy on the left and right were, I literally had to move my head to keep focus of the people I was shooting at.

It?s not all good with the big screen though as small graphical issues become quite apparent when they are bigger than your head. But this was preview code so I moved onto old faithful, Black Ops 2, to see how that worked.

Best gaming experience ever? it?s as simple as that. You become immersed into the game so quickly and with a proper surround sound setup and a screen bigger than your standard vision it?s impossible not to thoroughly enjoy every part of the experience.

Granted you aren?t as good as you normally are if you sit closer and need to move your head to react but you can shrink the projection a bit, sit back and still dominate the opposition, unless the opposition is jimmytediblewyrm that is? he kills me every time and my kids think it?s hilarious.

Next up on the testing table was GRiD 2 which proved to be another great experience with the vistas and horizons of California and Paris looking incredible in blurring fast moving detail. But nothing was as spectacular as smashing into a wall at 250mph and zooming into full life sized slowmo to watch my death? ah destruction.

Moving on

3D

One of the big selling points of this projector is that it is fully capable of 3D movies and gaming. I don?t like 3D movies and gaming at all so I am not in a position to say whether it does it well or not. It doesn?t try force it on me though so for that I?m grateful

So why don?t we all have projectors?

Up to now it?s all sounded perfect but if they are that good then why doesn?t everyone have a projector?

Well two issues will stand in the way of a lot of people. The first being that if you don?t have a HD PVR you are projecting a standard definition picture onto a 3 metre screen and that looks awful. This isn?t a problem with the projector mind you but rather a problem with the picture you are beaming.

Not to mention a bad Netflix picture is all but unwatchable at that size.

The other problem is that you need a room big enough to justify a projector. My lounge is rather large and as such it makes for the perfect projector room. But if you can?t mount your projector at least 4 metres away from the wall the resulting size wouldn?t be much more than a large TV which by pure physics will always have a better end screen.

So if you have the room size and are mainly using it for HD then I can openly and honestly recommend this product. I cried big man tears when they took it away from me and I now have to save a little more to get myself one as I cannot imagine going back to a standard 42? TV after this.

The Epson TW550 has a RRP of R11 055 but if that is slightly high you may want to look at its little brother the Epson TW480 which apparently is the same just without the 3D capability for just over R8 000.

Thanks to Epson for providing the review unit and just remember that I?ll hate you forever for taking it away again.

Kerry's palate gets workout in Mideast peace talks

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Red tuna and sea bream with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. A two-hour lunch of shish tawook and rice with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Back again with Netanyahu, it was hummus and mixed nuts. Secretary of State John Kerry's palate is getting a workout during his stepped-up rounds of Mideast diplomacy.

This is Kerry's fifth trip to the region to try his hand at helping craft a two-state solution, and his flurry of meetings between the Israeli and Palestinian camps have increased expectations that his latest chat 'n chews will yield progress in getting the two sides to reopen negotiations to end their decades-long conflict.

Kerry's initial plans to talk to both sides just once before traveling on to Brunei for a Southeast Asia security conference have turned instead into hurried shuttle diplomacy at a pace that is testing his aides ability to book the logistics of moving his delegation in tow.

His talks with Israel and the Palestinians head into a third day on Saturday. So far, they have amounted to talks about talks ? discussions to nail down what exactly each side needs to agree to resume negotiations, which broke down in 2008. There have not been any public statements of progress, yet Kerry's changing schedule has spawned rumors that progress has been made.

On Saturday, Kerry heads back to Amman for a second meeting with Abbas in two days. Then, instead of continuing his two-week swing through the Mideast and Asia, Kerry is returning to Jerusalem for a third time for additional meetings, the State Department said.

He began his shuttle diplomacy on Thursday night when he made the 90-minute drive from Amman to Jerusalem in a convoy of SUVs. Once in Jerusalem, he had four hours of talks with Netanyahu and a dinner, which included tuna sashimi with roots salad and wasabi cream, dried salted beef and salmon ceviche with chili, mint and pineapple.

On Friday, he had a two-hour-plus lunch with Abbas, and then returned to Jerusalem ? this time via helicopter ? to meet Netanyahu again. A table in a hotel suite where they talked was filled with trays of hummus, baba ghanoush, spiced pickles, tabouli salad, dates and nuts.

"So soon," Kerry said with a smile as he shook hands with the Israeli leader for the second time in less than 24 hours.

Kerry spokesmen were tight-lipped about how the talks went, saying only that he had a "detailed and substantive" three-hour conversation with Netanyahu.

Israeli officials also have declined to provide details about the talks. Palestinian officials could not be reached for comment despite numerous attempts.

So far, there have been no public signs that the two sides are narrowing their differences. No progress was publicly reported during Kerry's four earlier visits to the region either.

In the past, Abbas has said he won't negotiate unless Israel stops building settlements on war-won lands or accepts its 1967 lines ? before the capture of the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem in a Mideast war that year ? as a starting point for border talks. The Palestinians claim all three areas for their future state.

Netanyahu has rejected the Palestinian demands, saying there should be no pre-conditions ? though his predecessor conducted talks on the basis of the pre-1967 lines, and the international community views the settlements as illegal or illegitimate.

People who have watched Mideast peace negotiations come and go are skeptical, but hold out hope that a deal can be crafted.

"There's no question that Kerry could be successful restarting negotiations," said Jon Alterman, a Middle East expert from the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. "The real question is whether those negotiations can be successful.

"The problem is twofold: First, the parties don't trust each other, and each fears that the other will start negotiations only to pull out and blame the other for the collapse. Second, there's not much political support in either Israel or the Palestinian Authority for negotiations generally, let alone making any concessions to the other side."

State Department officials say that beyond trying to precisely ascertain their conditions for restarting talks, Kerry wanted to talk with them about the positive outcomes, such as enhanced economic growth, of a two-state solution. At the same time, they said he would remind them of what's at stake if the conflict is left unresolved.

Earlier this month, in a speech to the American Jewish Committee Global Forum in Washington, Kerry warned of serious consequences if no deal is reached with what he termed the current "moderate" Palestinian leadership. "The failure of the moderate Palestinian leadership could very well invite the rise of the very thing that we want to avoid: the same extremism in the West Bank that we have seen in Gaza or from southern Lebanon," he told the Jewish audience.

William Quandt, who was involved in negotiations that led to the Camp David Accords and the Egyptian-Israeli Peace Treaty, said Kerry might succeed in getting the two sides back to the table, "but that does not count for much." He said he doubts the two sides have agreed to an outline of territory for a Palestinian state. "I'm not very optimistic," he said.

Efraim Inbar, director of the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies at Israel's Bar-Ilan University, doesn't have high hopes for the two sides getting back into negotiations, but said that as long as Kerry continues to visit the region, his attempt won't be seen as a failure.

"As long as he keeps coming, people will have some hope," Inbar said. "He is very perseverant but the chances of him renewing negotiations are very slim."

Inbar said Abbas faces opposition to talks with Israel from within his own Fatah party as well as from its rival, the Islamic militant group Hamas. The Palestinians have been split since 2007 when Hamas overran Gaza ousting forces from the Fatah party led by Western-backed Abbas. Abbas has since governed only in parts of the West Bank, and Hamas rules Gaza.

"The Palestinians are not interested in negotiations because of domestic politics, Hamas pressure and with the whole region becoming more Islamic it's more difficult for them to make a deal," Inbar said. Within Netanyahu's own party, "there are those who are openly saying that negotiations go nowhere," he added.

After meeting with Netanyahu, Kerry visited Israeli President Shimon Peres, who received the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize for his role in a landmark interim peace accord in 1003. Peres, who turns 90 in August, encouraged Kerry to soldier on.

"All of us admire your investment in creating really the right environment to open the peace," Peres said. "I know it's still difficult. There are many problems, but as far I am concerned, I can see there is a clear majority for the peace process and the two-state solution and the great expectation that you will do it and that you can do it."

Countdown To The Eisners ? Best Writer - Bleeding Cool Comic ...

By Cameron Hatheway

A good writer can juggle several different titles at once, while making sure the quality never diminishes. A great writer can do all of that while still making every single deadline. The following six writers all have something in common; they?re the best of the best of the best, sir! (With honors!) All six individuals, all men, are highly respected in the industry and put in that extra elbow grease required when burning the midnight oil, just to get some of our favorite titles out on time while maintaining excellence. Today I?ll be focusing on the Best Writer category. If you need a reminder of what?s been nominated, you can find the entire list right here, and see what I chose last time right here.

Keep in mind I cannot vote for who wins (nor can you, probably), as per the rules. However, that?s not keeping me from being vocal regardless!

Who is not eligible to vote?

 • Comics press or reviewers (unless they are nominees)
 • Non-creative publisher staff members (PR, marketing, assistants, etc.)
 • Fans

Before I get back to writing my upcoming graphic novel How To Right Comics so I can be eligible for next year, let the games begin!

Best Writer

Ed Brubaker, Fatale (Image)

What makes a series like Fatale so great is the collaboration between Brubaker and Phillips. Both men have been attached at the hip on different successful projects for years, and together they have the formula of producing amazing comics down cold. Brubaker in particular really knows how to walk the fine line of pulp, noir, and science-fiction that makes Fatale so captivating across several demographics.

Matt Fraction, Hawkeye (Marvel); Casanova: Avaritia (Marvel Icon)

No one could have predicted how successful Hawkeye would be, and one of the main reasons it?s been such a hit with the fans is because of Matt Fraction keeping things fun. The right amount of humor mixed with the action gave new life to the character of Clint Barton, and the fact that Fraction keeps things in New York rather than around the world is a huge relief for those not wanting to get mixed-up with several decades of character continuity.

Brandon Graham, Multiple Warheads, Prophet (Image)

Science-fiction comics feel so clich? and overdone nowadays with the same looking ships, the same alien races, and the same survival of the species mentality. Enter Brandon Graham to change the landscape entirely and make everything feel so fresh and, well, alien! He took a forgotten about series, Prophet, and made it a must-read month after month with a bold new direction. Then he goes and creates his own quirky and fantastic universe in Multiple Warheads. The man has some great ideas, and a tremendous imagination.

Jonathan-Hickman Jonathan Hickman, The Manhattan Projects (Image)

As The Manhattan Projects rolls on, so does the complex and intricate alternate universe that Hickman has set-up featuring some of history?s biggest scientists. Entertaining as it is extraordinary, Hickman has always been known for his big ideas that pay-off further down the line. Hickman is a master at his craft, and definitely should be on everyone?s radar by now.

Brian K. Vaughan, Saga (Image)

After quite the vacation from comics, Brian K. Vaughan returns during a time of events and gimmicks to dazzle the masses once more with Saga, reminding us that great stories are alive and well in the medium. Making his new series accessible to almost everyone, Vaughan and Staples scored major points with fans with the new characters and settings, and for keeping on a reasonable schedule.

Frank M. Young, The Carter Family (Abrams ComicArts)

Frank M. Young did a tremendous job with the endless hours of researching the Carter family, and telling the tale not that many of us were ever familiar with. While the story progressed and years passed Young made sure that the reader was able to follow, as he constantly mentioned dates, previous events, and who was related to who in what way.

Jonathan-Hickman2Who I think should win:
Jonathan Hickman, The Manhattan Projects (Image)

Jonathan Hickman has come very far in his comic book career, and it makes me happy to see him get the nomination for his Image work opposed to his Marvel work. I?m in no way diminishing what he?s done for Marvel, but the attention to detail and energy he puts into his own original works consists of some powerful stuff and humongous ideas. It all seems farfetched and bizarre at times, but then Hickman pulls the rug out from underneath you and suddenly you?re simply wowed at how he brought it all together.

His writing is intelligent, his imagination is limitless, and it feels like his great ideas never stop coming at you.

Who I think could win:
Brian K. Vaughan, Saga (Image)

The comics industry is extended gutters and the gutters are full of events and when the drains finally scab over, all the variant covers will drown. The accumulated gimmicks of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the fans and comic editors will look up and shout ?Save us!?? and Brian K. Vaughan will look down and whisper ?Okay!?

Vaughan came back and made comics fun again. Albeit a little raunchy at times, but still damn entertaining nonetheless. This was the shot in the arm both the industry and fans needed.

Who I think should have been nominated:
Jeff Lemire, Lost Dogs, The Underwater Welder (Top Shelf), Animal Man (DC), Sweet Tooth (DC/Vertigo).

Jeff Lemire goes and has a tremendous 2012, and doesn?t get one nomination in any of the Eisner categories. Something is tremendously awry here.

Who do you think should win / been nominated?

Cameron Hatheway is the host of Cammy?s Comic Corner and Arts & Entertainment Editor of the Sonoma State STAR. You can tell him if he?s write on Twitter @CamComicCorner.

Large dead zone forming in the Gulf

June 27, 2013 ? Ocean experts had predicted a large "dead zone" area in the Gulf of Mexico this year, and according to the results from a Texas A&M University researcher just back from studying the region, those predictions appear to be right on target.

Steve DiMarco, professor of oceanography and one of the world's leading experts on the dead zone, says he and a Texas A&M team surveyed areas off the Texas-Louisiana coast last week and found large areas of oxygen-depleted water -- an area covering roughly 3,100 square miles, or about the size of Delaware and Rhode Island combined.

"We found hypoxia (oxygen-depleted water) just about everywhere we looked," DiMarco reports.

"The most intense area is where you would expect it -- off the Louisiana coast south of Atchafalaya Bay and Grande Isle, La. But we also found significant amounts off High Island and near Galveston. The farther south we went, the less we found hypoxia in the water column, but we still found plenty of depleted oxygen waters up to just west of Freeport.

"There is no doubt there is a lot of hypoxia in the Gulf this year."

Hypoxia occurs when oxygen levels in seawater drop to dangerously low levels, and persistent hypoxia can potentially result in fish kills and harm marine life, thereby creating a "dead zone" in that particular area.

Such low levels of oxygen are believed to be caused by nutrient pollution from farm fertilizers as they empty into rivers such as the Mississippi and eventually into the Gulf, or by soil erosion or discharge from sewage treatment plants. The size of the zone has been shown to be influenced by the nutrient runoff, volume of freshwater discharged, and prevailing winds, which controls the freshwater river plume's movement.

The Mississippi is the largest river in the United States, draining 40 percent of the land area of the country. It also accounts for almost 90 percent of the freshwater runoff into the Gulf of Mexico.

Last year, with much of the Midwest suffering through its worst drought in 100 years, the dead zone measured only 1,580 square miles.

DiMarco's research on the dead zone is supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), as part of its long-term commitment to advancing the science to inform management practices aimed at mitigating the hypoxic zone.

"While we await additional data from the entire summer, these early findings start to validate our prediction that we could see one of the largest dead zones ever in the Gulf of Mexico this July," said Robert Magnien, Ph.D., center director at NOAA's National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science.

"This is further confirmation of the link between upstream nutrient management decisions and the critical habitats and living resources in the Gulf."

DiMarco has made 28 research trips to investigate the dead zone since 2003. His cruise this year carried 10 investigators from Texas A&M and Texas A&M at Galveston and included two research scientists, Matthew Howard and Ruth Perry, five graduate students, Laura Harred, Jordan Young, Yan Zhao, Heather Zimmerle, and Nicole Zuck, and two marine technicians, Eddie Webb and Andrew Dancer (Geochemical and Environmental Research Group). On shore investigators include Lisa Campbell, Wilford Gardner, Shari Yvon-Lewis, and Ethan Grossman , all from Texas A&M, and Antonietta Quigg from Texas A&M-Galveston.

DiMarco says the size of the dead zone off coastal Louisiana has been routinely monitored since 1985. Previous research has also shown that nitrogen levels in the Gulf related to human activities have tripled over the past 50 years.

NFL Draft Packers FootballAP

There is loyalty, and there is inertia.

Either way, the persistence of a large bloc of Packers fans has been rewarded, as 5,000 names are being taken off the team?s season-ticket waiting list, the most in one offseason.

The Packers gave a glimpse of the expansion of Lambeau Field yesterday, which includes 7,000 new seats. The bulk of those are going to people who have been waiting to get in for decades.

?The folks coming off the list have been on for 30 years, so there?s some patience on their part. That?s the great thing with the support the Packers have,? Packers director of public affairs Aaron Popkey said, via WBAY.

Team officials said the project, which includes suites, escalators, new concession stands and standing room areas is 98 percent finished, and should be complete before the team?s shareholders meeting in late July.

While they took pride it making it look like it blended into one of the league?s most traditional buildings, they think it?s going to be even louder than before.

?I think it?ll be pretty dramatic in that top area,? said Stuart Zadra, vice president of Hammes Company, the contractor on the project. ?It?s got metal behind it that?s just going to reflect, and I?m sure people are going to be pounding on that metal cheering on Aaron Rodgers and the Packers.?

And with 7,000 new voices, the effect should be dramatic.

Japan's Hamada - don't worry about market volatility

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Recent volatility in financial markets is no cause for concern and does not threaten Japan's aggressive efforts to revive the economy after decades of deflation, an advisor to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Friday.

After surging to a 5-1/2-year high, Japan's Nikkei stock index <.n225> has slipped in recent weeks, causing some to worry about the long-term ability of aggressive monetary and fiscal policies to revive growth.

But Koichi Hamada told a gathering at the Japan Society in New York that "stock markets are by nature volatile and currencies often overshoot," adding that the stock market is still more than 30 percent higher than it was before the Abe government announced its reforms.

Aiming to revive the economy after decades of falling prices and stagnant growth, the Bank of Japan launched an aggressive course of monetary easing in April, pledging to pour about $1.4 trillion into the financial system by the end of 2014.

This shock therapy also weakened the yen, which in May fell to a 4-1/2-year low near 104 per dollar, though it has since strengthened and was around 99 per dollar on Friday. A weaker yen makes Japanese goods less costly in overseas markets.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 96 points, or 0.7 percent, to 14,857 as of 12: 15 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Boeing led the Dow higher with a jump of $2.07, or 2.1 percent, to $100.71.

The Standard & Poor's 500 was up 14, or 0.9 percent, to 1,602. All 10 industry sectors in the S&P 500 were up, led by health care stocks. The Nasdaq composite index was up 20 points, or 0.6 percent, to 3,368.

Traders bought bonds and yields fell after the government reported that the U.S. economy grew at a significantly slower rate than previously thought in the first three months this year. The annual rate is now estimated at 1.8 percent, compared with an earlier forecast of 2.4 percent.

Investors may have decided that the slower-growing economy will influence the Federal Reserve to delay any plans to pull back on stimulus measures. Those measures, which include buying bonds, are meant to prop up the economy by keeping interest rates low and encouraging people to buy stocks.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, a benchmark for many kinds of loans, fell to 2.56 percent from 2.61 percent late Tuesday. The yield has risen sharply over the last week as traders sold bonds in anticipation of the Fed winding down its bond-buying program. It was 2.19 percent June 18, the day before the Fed outlined its plans.

The recent spike had worried investors that a sudden increase in mortgage rates could undermine the recovery in the U.S. housing market. Some homebuilder stocks rose following the easing in interest rates. Lennar rose 66 percent, or 1.8 percent, to $35.88 and Toll Brothers rose 34 cents, or 1.1 percent, to $32.30.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke set off a stock market rout a week ago when he said the Fed could rein in the bond-buying program starting as early as this year. The Dow lost 560 points over Wednesday and Thursday last week. The Dow has gained back only about 100 points since that plunge.

It wasn't that investors were surprised that the Fed will pull back on its stimulus programs: Most everyone expects that to happen eventually. It was more that they were worried that the Fed might pull out too soon, before the stock market could stand on its own without the Fed propping it up. The Fed buys $85 billion worth of bonds very month.

Chip Cobb, senior vice president of BMT Asset Management in Bryn Mawr, Penn., predicted a volatile summer for the market, noting that companies will start to report earnings en masse in early July. Friday is the last trading day for the second quarter.

"We're not seeing any significant bottom-line growth," Cobb said. "It's all been cost-cutting measures."

Other Fed officials have scrambled to reassure investors that the central bank won't pull out of stimulus measures until it's sure the economy can handle it. Dallas Fed president Richard Fisher and Richmond Fed president Jeff Lacker are both scheduled to testify at a hearing with the U.S. House's banking committee Wednesday morning. While the Fed isn't the topic ? how to prevent bank bailouts is ? either could take the opportunity to speak on where they think Fed policy should go.

Markets were higher in Europe. Benchmark indexes rose 2 percent in France and 1.8 percent in Spain. Borrowing costs fell sharply for Spain and Italy as investors bought European government bonds.

At 1.8 percent, U.S. economic growth for 2013 would be less than 2010 or 2012, and in line with 2011. And while investors are glad for growth ? after all, the U.S. economy shrank in 2008 and 2009 ? most say they'd like to see an annual rate of 3 or 4 percent before they can feel comfortable about the pace of the economic recovery.

Gold for August delivery fell $40, or 3.2 percent, to $1,234 an ounce. Gold has fallen 26 percent this year as investors' fears of inflation failed to materialize.

Among companies making big moves:

?Fertilizer maker Mosaic fell after Citigroup analysts downgraded the stock to "Neutral" from "Buy," citing a hold-up in the company's stock buybacks and questions over demand for fertilizer. The stock fell $1.91, or 3.4 percent, to $54.

?Gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson fell, even after reporting that its profits doubled, as quarterly revenue missed analysts' forecasts. The stock fell 23 cents, or 2.3 percent, to $9.76.

?General Mills, whose products include Cheerios and Nature Valley granola bars, fell after reporting earnings predictions that came in slightly below analysts' estimates. The stock fell 49 cents, or 1 percent, to $47.84.

Kremlin's hammer falls on first 'foreign agent' NGO

Russian authorities have ordered a six-month suspension for the independent election monitoring group Golos, the first of dozens of "political" nongovernmental organizations to be cited for refusing to register as "foreign agents" under a new law.

A statement by the Ministry of Justice Wednesday says the group's six-month shutdown applies to all activities, and if it does not register within that period it will proceed to the next step, which involves criminal penalties and permanent closure.

"Under the federal law on NGOs, an organization acting as a foreign agent whose operations have been suspended also faces the suspension of its rights as a founder of mass media sources. It is also banned from holding rallies or public events and from using bank accounts except for payments pertaining to economic operation, work compensation, damages, taxes, duties and fines," the statement says.

RECOMMENDED: Do you know anything about Russia? A quiz.

Golos was the first NGO to be prosecuted under the law, which prescribes an escalating sequence of fines followed by forced closure for groups that receive any degree of foreign funding and that refuse to don the "foreign agent" label ? which, critics say, is effectively a poison pill that implies "spy" and nothing else in the Russian language.

Lined up behind Golos, there are currently over 60 NGOs at various stages along the route to mandatory closure if they continue to reject the self-incriminating "foreign agent" registration.

The pro-Kremlin parliamentarians who drafted the law a year ago explicitly targeted Golos, and a few other groups, which they claimed were deceiving the Russian public by working on behalf of foreign interests under the guise of legitimate civil-society activity.

But activists argue the explanation for putting Golos at the head of the list is simpler: It was some 50,000 citizen election monitors, trained by Golos, who collected overwhelming evidence of mass electoral fraud in December 2011 polls ? which elected the current State Duma ? and in taking aim at the group the pro-Kremlin majority is seeking both revenge and the destruction of Russia's best organized grassroots machine for exposing electoral fraud in the future.

Activists with Golos say they are considering various response strategies, among which is a risky plan to officially disband the organization and recreate it under a new name.

"We are working on what to do," says Grigory Melkonyants, deputy director of Golos.

"We realize that just paying the fines that have been levied on us won't stop the authorities from closing down Golos and prosecuting its leaders. We are suing the prosecutor's office and the Justice Ministry, and we will take that all the way to the Constitutional Court if necessary. We're going to launch an appeal to the European Court," he says.

"But there is no doubt that the closure of Golos is a signal to the whole NGO community. The goal is to scare them," and make them stop any activities that irritate the authorities, in Moscow and around the country, he says.

So far no leading organization has agreed to wear the "foreign agent" badge, which all say would discredit them with the public and close the doors of officialdom to any kind of interaction ? which is the raison d'?tre of most civil society groups.

Among the NGOs on the list and facing suspension in coming weeks are some obvious Kremlin irritants, such as Russia's largest human rights organization Memorial; the Russian branch of the global anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International; the legal activist group Lawyers for Constitutional Rights and Freedoms, JURIX; the Nizhni Novgorod-based Interregional Committee Against Torture, which deals mainly with allegations of police brutality; and the Goldman Prize-winning Baikal Environmental Wave, one of the country's most effective grassroots ecological groups.

But it's harder to explain why some completely non-political groups also seem to find themselves in the authorities' sights. These include the St. Petersburg Side-by-Side LGBT film festival; the Yaroslavl Regional Hunters and Fishermen Society; the Saratov-based Center For Social Policy and Gender Studies; the Kostroma branch of the Soldiers' Mothers, a group that has been praised both in Russia and abroad for its work on the painful issues of conscription and military reform; and the country's only independent pollster, the Levada Center.

"This campaign against NGOs is sadly predictable, and its effects are probably irreversible," says Dmitry Oreshkin, head of the Mercator Group, an independent Moscow-based media consultancy.

"The authorities are aiming to discredit, frighten, destroy, and compel obedience from all far-flung sectors of society," he says.

But the net effect of the campaign will be to build up anger and resentment in the public, and remove the very civil society groups that should be dealing with problems at the grassroots level and mediating between authorities and society, he adds.

Mr. Melkonyants says a lot of social progress that's taken place in Russia since the USSR collapsed 22 years ago is being undone in a fit of bureaucratic pique.

"The worst thing here is that the state is driving a wedge between NGOs and society, and trying to convince the public that groups like ours are evil, the devil incarnate," he says. "Many Russian NGOs have worked for dozens of years to gain public trust, and now it's being swept away in a wave of official disinformation. They are making people look at us with suspicion, as though we are Western mercenaries."

Square branches out into e-commerce with new ... - The Next Web

Mobile and digital payment platform Square has moved into a new market today. It?s a bit different than what most people might think ? it?s an e-commerce play called?Square Market and it enables local businesses throughout the United States to sell their products to anyone, anywhere, through the Internet.

A different kind of market

Earlier today, the company tweeted out a tease hinting that it would be expanding into a new market this week. After the recent move into Japan, its second international country, it made sense that Square could be expanding to other places ? perhaps Europe? Australia? South America? We now know that to be inaccurate.

Square Market is the company?s digital marketplace where people can go to find local businesses who want to sell their products anywhere in the US. It?s different from the Square Directory, which was set up as a means to find physical stores that accepted the Square Card Reader. The Market is Square?s way of helping businesses reach more customers. After all, wouldn?t it be great to order Blue Bottle coffee from Las Vegas or New York City?

Creating a global marketplace of local businesses

This e-commerce play is much different than simply shopping on Amazon or large retailers. Square Market is solely focused on the local businesses, which has been the company?s?modus operandi from day one. There?s something to be said about local businesses and the quality and care that they put into their product.

One of the unfortunate downsides of being a local business is that the store is essentially limited to just the community around it. And it doesn?t even have to be a physical store ? after all, there are many people that have tangible goods who might work out of their homes or an office and want to find ways to sell their wares. With Square Market, it looks like the company is helping to create more of a national marketplace accessible to everyone and at a rate that won?t break the bank.

sr market 730x388 Square branches out into e commerce with new Square Market virtual stores for US businesses

No expensive set up needed

Square says that with its marketplace, sellers won?t need to spend a ton of money dealing with creating a website, fees, or even ?complex inventory management.? The company lets anyone open up a store on its platform for free with items, photos, and a profile. Square only charges a 2.75 percent transaction fee for each item sold.

Merchants can also sync up items sold through their Square Register right with their online store.

But how will customers find the store? Square says that merchants and customers can easily share items that they?ve found in a store through Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Leveraging Twitter?s Cards API, the item?s description and photo will appear within the Tweet.

Naturally, Square will handle all transactions. Through its dashboard, merchants can view all order details and also choose how an item is to be shipped.

Fulfillment not included

Square Market isn?t going to do all the work for the merchant. Once the transaction has been processed, it?s up to the seller to ship the item and handle all fulfillment requests. In a sense, one could think about it as if you?re in New York City and you bought a cup of coffee from Blue Bottle in San Francisco. The barrista would need to package it and ship it to you either through FedEx, UPS, DHS, or even the US postal service.

Social selling

Square?s entry into the social selling space is an interesting one, especially as it seems more companies are seeking to find ways to monetize it. It could also be advantageous if Square finds a way to effectively utilize it, especially in light of the competition it?s facing from PayPal, Intuit, Amazon, and others.

But let?s also not forget those startups that have been here for a while, including Chirpify and Ribbon. They are the ones that have made it so brands can sell their wares using a simple Tweet, Facebook post, or even a YouTube video.

Ajit Varma, Square?s Director of Discovery, says that the company is ?focused on making easy-to-use tools for merchants that create an incredible experience for their customers ? no matter where they are. Creating an online marketplace is our next step in making commerce easy for everyone. Square Market makes local businesses accessible to customers down the block and across the country.?

This feature is available also on mobile devices. Since the service already syncs with the Square Register app, it wouldn?t be that unbelievable that when a purchase is made, the merchant will be notified on their phone or tablet device and easily process the transaction. It could also be registered using Square?s newest device, Stand, which was revealed in May for US retailers to have for $299.

Busy year for Square

Today?s news just adds onto Square?s busy year. It is already processing $15 billion payments annually (not including the amount from Starbucks, which is a major investor in the company).

The company also has made strides to expand itself internationally, with the hiring of former Google executive Francoise Brougher and former US Deputy Trade Representative Demetrios Marantis. As mentioned earlier, Square has brought its platform to Japan, making it the second non-US country following Canada.

It also comes on the heels of company co-founder Tristan O?Tierney announcing his departure after 4.5 years.

Square Market is available starting today for US merchants to set up their shops and begin selling online.

Update:?Square co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted out that Square Market was created in just three months.

Mad scientists turn roaches into cyborgs, control them with Kinect, laugh at nature

We'd love to tell you that the researchers at North Carolina State University aren't monsters who implant circuits on living things so that those living things do their bidding, but we'd be lying. They totally do that, roaches are their primary victim, and now they're using Microsoft's Kinect to help them control the insects. Sure, why not!

As Dr. Alper Bozkurt of NCSU says in today's new release, "Our goal is to be able to guide these roaches as efficiently as possible, and our work with Kinect is helping us do that." Apparently the researchers are employing Kinect for data collection as well, determining how effectively the cyborg survivors respond to electrical impulse-motivated control. They say the end goal is to use the partially mechanized arthropods to, "explore and map disaster sites." For now, there's some very weird stuff happening in North Carolina. Head below for a video of the roaches in action.

Microsoft 'approaching' 100,000 apps in the Windows Store, boasts app downloads in the 'hundreds of millions'

Companies love milestones nearly as much as bees love honey, so it doesn't come as much of a surprise that Microsoft would take advantage of Build 2013 to announce as much positive news as it possibly can. This time, MS head Steve Ballmer has revealed to us that he expects the Windows Store to hit the 100,000 mark (in terms of total apps) sometime this month. Sounds about right if you monitor services like MetroStore Scanner to get a good feel for the OS's progress: it lists over 95,000 apps, which certainly fits the bill.

Additionally, Microsoft also claimed that the very same Windows Store has witnessed app downloads in the vicinity of "hundreds of millions." This vague indicator is not as impressive as it could certainly be if an actual number was attached, but we have a feeling that our friends in Redmond are trying to keep the specifics as hush-hush as possible.

Judge taking no action in Jackson guardianship

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A judge said Tuesday that he will make no changes to the guardianship of Michael Jackson's three children after receiving an investigator's report on their well-being and meeting with attorneys for their caretakers.

Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff ordered the inquiry after 15-year-old Paris Jackson was hospitalized on June 5. Authorities reported she took Motrin pills and cut her arm with a kitchen knife.

The judge ordered an investigator to interview Jackson's children and report back to him.

Beckloff also met with attorneys for the children's guardians, grandmother Katherine Jackson and their adult cousin TJ Jackson.

"I'm taking no further action," Beckloff told attorneys for Jackson' estate.

The decision was announced during a hearing at which Howard Weitzman, an attorney for the estate, raised the issue of potential harm to the singer's daughter that might come with unsealing "salacious details" of a choreographer's recent molestation allegations against the pop superstar.

Beckloff told attorneys he will consider which portions of Wade Robson's complaint to unseal and inform attorneys of his decision. Robson claims the acts occurred when he was a child.

Another hearing will be held to determine if Robson can pursue that allegation.

Perry Sanders Jr., an attorney for Katherine Jackson, has said Paris Jackson is physically fine and receiving proper medical attention. He has not provided further updates on her condition.

Sanders and Charles Shultz, an attorney for TJ Jackson, have said the judge's inquiry was an expected move and they supported his decision.

The Board Game Family Castle Panic The Wizard's Tower ...

Castle Panic Wizards Tower board game expansion

Small expansion with a lot more Panic stuffed inside!

Castle Panic is one of our favorite cooperative board games. The first time we played it, we knew we were hooked. Right from the start of the game, you can see why it?s named ?Panic? because monsters are very quickly closing in on your castle walls and you can sense the doom.

Everyone we?ve played it with has enjoyed it as well. Working together to fight off the marauding monsters is a lot of fun. And it does take a lot of teamwork to win the game.

So when the expansion Castle Panic The Wizard?s Tower came out, we were anxious to get a copy to add to the fun.

Castle Panic Wizards Tower board game expansion

Love the Monster Draw Bag!

What the draw of The Wizard?s Tower?
The Wizard?s Tower expansion adds a ton of stuff. There are 10 new cards to add to the Castle card deck. There?s a whole new deck of cards ? the Wizard deck ? with 22 cards that all add special abilities. There are Flame tokens that can both damage monsters as well as weaken your castle walls and towers. There?s a Wizard?s Tower (how appropriate) that replaces one of the castle towers. And there are a ton of new monsters and new monster types that increase the Panic a ton.

And let?s not forget the Draw Bag!
Using a draw bag for the monster tokens is a whole lot nicer than having all the monster tokens face down on the table to draw from. And a black bag with beady eyes is the perfect addition to the game.

Does The Wizard?s Tower add to the fun?
If you like facing almost insurmountable odds, then yes, The Wizard?s Tower expansion adds a lot of fun to the game. The additional monsters and elements added to the game sure do increase the tension. It also increases the amount of things you need to keep track of.

Castle Panic Wizards Tower board game expansion

Burning castle walls and the Wizard?s Tower.

When playing with The Wizard?s Tower expansion, we make sure to keep the added reference cards and rulebook handy because there are so many things that are added.

First the simple additions?

The Actual Wizard?s Tower
This is an easy addition to the game. Just replace one of the regular towers with the special Wizard?s Tower. As long as that tower is still standing, players can use the Wizard Deck to draw from. Once that tower is destroyed however, that deck of cards can?t be used (players can still use any wizard cards still in their hand).

The Wizard Deck and New Castle Cards
The cards in the Wizards Deck add some cool abilities like damaging a monster anywhere on the board, catching monsters on fire, all players drawing up to full hand, or even getting monsters to attack each other.

Castle Panic Wizards Tower board game expansion

Plenty of cards to help in the battle ahead.

During the Discard and Draw phase, players can discard a card to draw a card from the Wizard deck. It?s tempting to get a lot of wizard cards because of their abilities, but to fight a balanced fight, players will need to keep a good stock of regular castle cards as well. A tricky balance.

Of course the 10 new castle cards are pretty cool to have at your disposal as well. Some of the new abilities include changing the color of a hit card, changing the range, adding a double strike, knocking monsters back, having another player play a hit card, and a appropriately named card ?Never Lose Hope? where you immediately discard as many cards as you want and draw that many castle cards.

Now on to the tough additions?

Castle Panic Wizards Tower board game expansion

So many new types of monsters to be wary of.

The Dastardly Monsters
If you?ve thought the original game was too easy, then this will be what you?re looking for. Now there are a ton of new monster types to battle ? including monsters that can fly!

There are also 6 new Mega Boss Monsters that are very tough to take down. Mega Boss Monsters have abilities that are in effect as long as the monster is in play. And some have special movement and damage rules. Which would you like to go up against ? Basilisk, Chimera, Dragon, Hydra, Necromancer, or the Warlock? Oh, and you should know that the Dragon and Chimera breath fire ? watch out for ranged fireballs! (The only saving grace here is that only 3 are randomly selected at the start to be in the game.)

Castle Panic Wizards Tower board game expansion

Mega Boss Monsters and their Harbinger tokens.

Because they?re so powerful, up to 5 hits to destroy, their monster token has more points on it. So instead of placing the monster token itself in the monster token draw bag, there are Harbinger tokens that have the standard 3-point shape. Each of the Harbinger tokens has the name of the Mega Boss that it represents printed on it. That way, when a player reaches in the bag, they don?t know if they?re drawing a regular monster token or a special monster. When they draw a Harbinger token, the Mega Boss monster token that is named on the Harbinger token is placed on the board to start its onslaught.

But the Mega Bosses aren?t all. There are 13 other new types of monsters in the game!
Now there are Centaurs, Cyclops, Gargoyles, Imps, Ogres, and more! And they all love to wreck havoc in new ways.

For example, one of the added monster tokens is the Doppelganger. It isn?t moved, hit, or slayed. It just sits there until another monster is destroyed. When the next monster is destroyed, the Doppelganger token is replaced with the token of the recently destroyed monster as if that monster were just drawn from the bag and placed. So with a Doppelganger on the board be careful what you kill next because it will come back to haunt you.

See why it?s important to keep the reference cards and rulebook handy to know what you?re up against.

The downside of having so many new monster types and special abilities is that the game slows down. Sure they?re cool to add, but because they?re all so unique it takes a long while to get familiar with everything going on.

But they sure all add a lot of Panic!

Sorting it all out
Another thing we love about The Wizard?s Tower expansion is that all the new items have a cool Wizard Hat Icon on them. This makes it so helpful for sorting all the items at the end of a game. That way if we?re tired of getting destroyed so much, we can pull those out and just play with a ?regular? level of panic for a while.

Final Thoughts
Castle Panic The Wizard?s Tower expansion adds a ton of new elements to the game. While it?s played the same as the original, all the new monsters and cards add a lot more to think about. You?ll definitely be glad that you?re working together as a team to fight your way through all this new panic.

We?d also recommend not introducing The Wizard?s Tower to new players. The base game is just great for new players. Adding in the expansion elements in a game with new players is just way too much to take in.

We like having the expansion and being able to challenge ourselves as much as we?d like. If we want more panic, we?ll add it all in. If we?d like not so much panic, but do want some more variety we?ll simply choose to play with a portion of the expansion elements.

One thing we all agree on ? Castle Panic is a great cooperative board game and we highly recommend it.

 • 1 Wizard?s Tower
 • 10 Castle Cards
 • 22 Wizard Cards
 • 49 Monster Tokens
 • 12 Flame Tokens
 • 6 Reference Cards

Medical E-Booking Platform ZocDoc Takes On $53 Million In New Convertible Debt

zocdocZocDoc, the company that makes a web-centric platform for booking health appointments, has closed on $53 million as part of a new $55 million round of convertible debt. In a phone call this afternoon, ZocDoc CEO Cyrus Massoumi said that the funding is in a convertible debt note with a “handful of folks.” He declined to provide further details on the entities involved. “We made the decision a little while ago to open up a convertible debt note on incredibly company-favorable terms… and I don’t believe that companies should ever raise money when they ‘need it’,” Massoumi said. “We don’t need the money, we don’t plan to use it, it’s basically sitting in the bank collecting dust.” Indeed, it doesn’t seem like ZocDoc should be desperate for new funds at the moment. Since it was founded five years ago, ZocDoc has taken on some $95 million in venture capital from investors including Khosla Ventures, Goldman Sachs, DST Global, and others. The new debt note comes at a solid point in ZocDoc’s growth, Massoumi said. ZocDoc has now passed 1,000 procedure types on the service. This is a nice bit of news for the company, which when it launched way back in 2007 at the TechCrunch 40 conference (the earliest iteration of what is now known as Disrupt) was criticized for being something that people would book minor appointments on, but not major things like heart surgeries. “Now, we have people booking appointments for heart surgeries and butt rashes,” Massoumi joked. The new infusion of funding will be a nice thing to have set away as ZocDoc continues to angle for more growth. Massoumi says that ZocDoc recently expanded its New York headquarters, and now has more than 400 employees on its payroll. Its platform is live in more than 1800 cities, and the “vast majority” of the regions in which it operates are profitable for the company, he said.

Police search again near home of Pats' Hernandez

NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) ? Police again searched the area near the home of New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, a week after his friend's body was found about a mile away.

Some police officers wore wetsuits Monday while searching woods near Hernandez's home, not far from the industrial park where Odin Lloyd's body was found.

Lloyd, a 27-year-old semi-pro football player for the Boston Bandits, was found slain June 17. His relatives said he was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancee, that the two men were friends and that both men were out together on the last night of Lloyd's life.

An Attleboro District Court official said no new documents were available in connection with the case Monday morning. The Bristol County district attorney's office also didn't release any new information about the case, which their spokeswoman called "an active, ongoing investigation."

A court official said last week that three search warrants had been issued, but none of them had been returned, meaning they weren't yet public.

Hernandez hasn't commented on the homicide investigation, but has been seen with his lawyer.

The Patriots drafted Hernandez, who is originally from Bristol, Conn., out of the University of Florida in 2010. Last summer, the team gave him a five-year contract worth $40 million.

Western Digital boosts SSD cred with $340 million sTec acquisition

Western Digital has clearly made a name for itself in the magnetic drive space, but it's hardly the go-to brand when it comes to SSDs. WD's betting that'll soon change, though, thanks to a $340 million investment. That sum will be used to acquire sTec Inc., a US-based SSD manufacturer best known for its enterprise solid-state drives (and a recent insider trading scandal). The company will fall under HGST, a WD wholly owned subsidiary, and will likely continue focusing its efforts on SSDs designed for business use -- serving up ones and zeroes in servers and data centers, for example. Development of nonvolatile liquid anthracenes for facile full-color luminescence tuning: Application to foldable light-emitting devices expected

June 23, 2013 ? A research team headed by Dr. Takashi Nakanishi, a Principal Researcher of the NIMS Organic Materials Group, Polymer Materials Unit, developed a full-colour tunable luminescent liquid material with excellent light stability based on an anthracene molecule, which is a general organic fluorescent dye.

A research team headed by Dr. Takashi Nakanishi, a Principal Researcher of the Organic Materials Group (Group Leader: Masayuki Takeuchi), Polymer Materials Unit (Unit Director: Izumi Ichinose) of the National Institute for Materials Science (President: Sukekatsu Ushioda), developed a full-colour tunable luminescent liquid material with excellent photostability based on anthracene, which is a general organic fluorescent dye.

In the development of full-colour display monitors, mobile devices, and other electronic devices, organic molecular and polymer materials are essentially important, as they offer advantages such as light weight, flexibility, and printability. However, in virtually all cases, the light-emitting organic molecular materials developed until now have had difficulties to demonstrate their inherent luminescent performance due to various problems, which include low photostability (durability to prevent discoloration or decolorization under photoirradiation) and aggregation of molecules in the coating process. Moreover, from the viewpoint of production of flexible devices, materials should be free of deterioration of the continuous emissive layer, even when subjected to excessive bending and folding. On the other hand, development of organic molecular materials which enable simple, low-cost manufacture of full-colour luminescence devices, in comparison with individual synthesis of organic molecular materials that display various luminescent colours, is also desired.

The team led by Dr. Nakanishi developed a blue-emitting liquid material which is free of aggregation among adjacent anthracene parts, has a melting point of approximately -60 ?C, and is thermally stable up to about 300 ?C, by attaching highly flexible branched alkyl chains around an anthracene core moiety, which is a fluorescent general dye molecule. This material is a low-viscosity liquid with viscosity of approximately 0.3 Pa-s at room temperature and is a blue-emitting with an absolute fluorescence quantum yield of ca. 55% and photostable more than 5~10 times longer lifetime than that of commercially-available anthracene dyes. Furthermore, because other luminescent dye molecules can be doped homogeneously in this liquid, it was found that full-colour luminescence tuning is available assisted by up to 96% fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) of dyes by single blue-light (365nm) excitation.

In this research, a blue-emitting anthracene liquid with excellent photostability was synthesized, and a liquid material which displays high quality full-colour luminescence and precise luminescence tuning by the facile operation of doping the liquid with other dyes was developed. Since the nonvolatile liquid material developed in this work can be coated on the surface of various substrates, production of organic multicolour devices with stable single color excitation can be expected. A continuous active emitting layer can be maintained, without breaking or interruption even when bent and folded, which is a favorable property for the development of foldable flexible devices.

Inhabitat's Week in Green: flying bicycle, tatooed fruits and a wireless EV-charging system

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

DNP Inhabitat's Week in Green TKTKTK

This week, the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar -- the world's largest solar-powered boat -- docked in downtown Manhattan, and Inhabitat was on the scene to tour the 115-foot Swiss catamaran and learn about its latest trans-Atlantic voyage. The PlanetSolar team isn't the only one pioneering new technologies, though. Google announced plans to deploy fleets of solar-powered balloons to bring the internet to remote locations around the world. A pair of British men debuted the world's first flying bicycle, which combines a bike with a fan-powered paraglider. A 16-year-old developed a cleaner, more efficient way to create biofuel from algae, and Coca-Cola produced a classic Coke bottle that's made entirely from ice that melts away when you're finished with it.
