S&P 500 touches highest level since May 2008

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Standard & Poor's 500 index touched its highest point in more than four years Tuesday. But a morning rally faded, and stock indexes were down slightly by the afternoon.

Sean Clark, chief investment officer at Clark Capital Management Group, an investment advisory firm, saw no major news driving the market. Trading volume has been light in recent days.

Clark said that part of the explanation for the stock market's steady climb this month is that some money managers are afraid of missing out on the rally.

"A lot of fund managers have underperformed this year, and I think they're feeling pressure," he said. "There may have been some panic buying over the last couple of weeks."

In other trading, the Dow Jones industrial average slipped 22 points to 13,245, and the Nasdaq composite index lost 10 points to 3,066. Crude oil hit its highest price in three months, rising $1.32 to $97.58.

Clark Yingst, chief market analyst at the securities firm Joseph Gunnar, thought traders were swayed by talk that the European Central Bank may launch a bond-buying effort to support the region's troubled countries.

Yingst pointed to currency moves and bank stocks as evidence. JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley and other companies with ties to Europe rose more than the overall market. The euro surged 1 percent to $1.247.

"It's very much a news- and rumor-driven market," Yingst said.

Treasury prices fell, and the yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. note climbed to 1.84 percent from 1.81 percent Monday.

Facebook's stock sank 3 percent after one of its earliest backers, venture capitalist Peter Thiel, sold the bulk of his stake in the social network. Last week was the first time some insiders could sell their shares.

On Tuesday, Facebook's stock lost 73 cents to $19.28. It went public in May at almost twice that price, $38.

Why Bother With Literature? Students And Teachers And Writing In ...

When I was teaching literature and writing courses at a private liberal arts college in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, members of the faculty were asked to prepare a statement justifying the existence of their major programs. Our vice-president at the time (there was an incredible turn-over in presidents and vice-presidents at that college) seemed to be serious about education* and directed the faculty to answer specific questions regarding the importance of what we were doing. Since I was the coordinator of the English program (a program situated in the Humanities Department which included literature, philosophy, religion, speech, film studies, and media communications), I provided answers which I felt underscored the importance of what we were doing.

I still feel that these are important issues for an English program, whether standing separately as an individual department in a large university or as a part of a humanities division in a small college. I have taught writing and literature in two private colleges, two community colleges, and one major university in the USA. Time has not, despite the current and fashionable interest in technology, eroded the importance of concentrating in writing, literature, and language studies. This belief, therefore, caused me to congratulate my students in at a level-two technological university in Anshan, China? and in Ningbo, China, at a level-three technological university, which is associated with a level-one university in Hangzhou?for majoring in English and for taking literature courses. The reasons I have done so can be found in the answers to the questions put to me below. I have, where necessary, generalized the answers to include a scale that is more global.

A. When students finish an English Language and Literature program, they will be able to do what?

1. These students will be able to realize that literature, like any art, is not created in a vacuum but reflects the culture and times in which it was created. This will cause them not only to realize, but to show the importance of being able to communicate thoughts and ideas in a cogent form so that the authors? messages and feelings can be understood and appreciated for centuries.

2. These students will be able to write and to speak in a scholarly manner about important issues that not only exist today but have existed for centuries, from before the time of Homer to the present. They will be able to argue effectively because they will have learned how to back up opinion with research findings, which they have learned to, quote and document correctly. They will have learned how to communicate clearly and effectively so that their own ideas do not become lost or ignored.

3. These students will be able to conduct research in many fields because they have learned the correct methods of researching, documenting, and incorporating findings in research papers. Those who have studied creative writing will also be able to create their own literature; this is daring and important because it involves digging deeply into themselves and fashioning into art something that did not exist before.

B. Why should students study with you as a professor?

1. Students should study with me as a professor only if they have a thirst for knowledge and an interest in expanding their horizons, which is what education is supposed to be about.

2. Students should not be caught up in the appearance of learning, trapped only in the superficial rhetoric but should, instead, be aware of the hard work that is needed to take charge of, and take responsibility for, their own education. They should be aware of the fact that education is about life-long learning and life-skills, that it is more than mere job training and that it is not finite.

3. If students study writing with me, they should be willing to face the possibility that writing and publishing is a difficult, painful process, and that creative writing requires digging into the pain and suffering of our memories because that is usually the source of the energy required to be creative. It is an uncomfortable but necessary part of the creative process, and this takes not only honesty but also great courage.

C. Why should students study in an English Language and Literature Program? [or Department of Foreign Languages]

1. Students should study in an English Language and Literature Program because it is essential, particularly in areas of the world where writing skills are reportedly the weakest, that they be able to communicate clearly, correctly, and effectively on the level of intelligent university students and, eventually, the level of university graduates who are able to compete with graduates from universities worldwide. They would become aware of the world-wide importance of the language or vocabulary with which they communicate.

2. They should study literature as well as language in order to realize that literature reflects the times, mores, and philosophies of the authors ? that its subject can be as varied as the multiple points of everyday life, with which it is connected, not as talk show topics between covers but as serious analysis of human endeavors and foibles.

3. They would recognize and appreciate the extent of the contributions of literary figures such as William Shakespeare who utilized or created words with a genius unknown before or since his time, whose vocabulary was the largest of any known English writer, and whose First Folio of his plays gave to all speakers of English more new words than any other single source**. With this recognition and appreciation they would, hopefully, build a bridge between the past and the future so that the monumental achievements of the past are not lost in the glitz and glitter of a technology that remains in the service of a transitory, materialistic world but are maintained as a foundation for a future rich with aesthetic and intellectual possibilities.

?Among the most important developments in contemporary global culture is the arrival of Western literary criticism and literary theory in China.? This statement is made by W. J. T. Mitchell in his preface to the Chinese edition of A HANDBOOK OF CRITICAL APPROACHES TO LITERATURE, printed for China by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press ? a text I am now using for seniors in Research Methods in Ningbo. He adds: ?There is arguably no greater force in producing understanding between peoples than the transmission of literary traditions ? the great heritage of narrative, lyric, and prose forms that give cultures their distinctive character.? This is why, I believe, that more literature courses are needed in certain universities in China, not only one semester of British literature and one semester of American but two semesters of each. More important, students in all areas of studies should be exposed to world literature and mythology. When I taught literature in Anshan, I had to cram two semesters of information and small snippets from the primary literature into one semester. I complained about this, but to no avail. I tried to change textbooks but was not allowed to do so. This was when I was still naive enough to believe that students were attending the university to receive an education. Many students here in Ningbo have referred to me as a serious professor. Since I often make jokes in class, I assumed that they were not referring to a lack of sense of humor. You see, I had taken it for granted that all professors, foreign or domestic (Chinese), were serious about educating in the classroom. Boy, was I naive.

When I was an undergraduate back in a small college in Illinois (my home state or, as I like to call it, God?s Country), I heard our instructor state that a college diploma should be handed out with a birth certificate. I never forgot his remark. What I would like to recommend today, therefore, is that those universities on both sides of the Pacific who are more concerned with maximizing profits than they are with providing a real education ? who intimidate professors who try to maintain intellectual standards ?to take this simple step: eliminate all course work for students, charge the students and/or their beleaguered parents tuition for the equivalent of four years tuition, and hand to them the diploma. No pretenses. No false claims. Then those universities sincerely interested in educating students with real standards can hire the best professors and recruit only the serious students who really. . . really. . . really want to learn for the sake of knowledge. Then knowledge. . . not only virtue. . . becomes its own reward.

So much of literature, and so much of life, is based on the foundations of world mythology and the greatest literature that the geniuses of the mighty word have produced. This is what it means to be educated for the sake of being educated, not just trained for employment. Once we accept this, we might get back to what education and the teaching of literature is really supposed to be about.

We can then get serious.

* This ?serious? vice-president later allowed students who had failed courses (one male had failed four courses in our English department and one female had failed two of mine alone) to walk across the graduation stage because, as he admitted to the faculty the next day in a meeting, he was intimidated by their parents.

Next week the students of Torquay?s growing surf education program will showcase what they?ve been up to and give future classmates a sneak peek into what?s involved at their annual Open Night at Surf World on August 22.

Sports Education and Development Australia (SEDA) provides year 11/12 and first year university students a unique hands-on study alternative, with a focus on sport and the accompanying industry. The open night will be hosted by the students and is open to prospective students, parents, industry representatives and the general public. It will feature presentations, films and discussions.

Program coordinator Stuey Hawken said SEDA was all about engaging students in something they?re passionate about.

?It?s a great alternative, they develop study skills, and they come out of it with multiple qualifications and are work-ready,? he said.

SEDA sets students up with multiple work placement opportunities, and they can walk away with Certificate III, IV and a diploma in sport and recreation, senior VCAL and a VCE certificate of completion.

Connor McGrath, a first year SEDA student, travels hours to get to class, and is on multiple organising committees for local events. He said the program was very motivating.

?I?m a soccer player, but I?d lost motivation at school. This is something new, and the surfing was the main appeal. It?s like the workplace, there?s no mucking around, the surfing and the motivation ? you actually want to be here.?

Some of the subjects students can sink their teeth into at SEDA include event management, coaching, fitness, training plans, first aid, club management, client services, work related skills and more.

Courtney Hobbs, who?s in the middle of Certificate IV, said she originally planned to enrol in SEDA?s football program in Geelong, but heard about SEDA in Torquay, and got back into surfing.

?I?m enjoying it so much and the opportunities in the industry are really good. To anyone who loves their sport like us all here, it?s a great outlet.?

The SEDA Open Night kicks off at 7pm at Surf World on Wednesday August 22.

My family was at the home of some friends visiting with a few families from our church. After dinner, our friends? children asked their dad if they could watch a movie. He agreed and told them to pick out a DVD. The video they selected, ?The Transformers,? was rated PG-13.

When I learned about their movie choice, I was faced with a dilemma. Should I ?go with the flow? and let my 9-year-old daughters view this flick? Or should I uphold our family?s rule against PG-13 movies?

I knew what had to be done.

I went downstairs to a family room filled with kids waiting for the video to begin and respectfully told my friend, ?I?m sorry, but my girls won?t be able to watch this movie. They can just play in the other room while the other kids watch.? Thankfully my friend understood and even asked his son to choose a different movie. The kids ended up watching a G-rated film I knew wasn?t objectionable.

I might?ve come off as Mr. Wet Blanket to the kids that night. But more important than the approval of my girls? friends is my daughters? moral and spiritual development.

That should be true for all Christian parents.

If our kids are to become modern-day Josephs, we should value our children?s growth in biblical worldview, faith and character over what?s popular in culture.

Of course, protecting our children from harmful content (the ?garbage-in, garbage-out? principle) is only part of a parent?s job. But it?s still a vital responsibility.

We need to limit our children?s exposure to messages, images, values and attitudes that contradict biblical truth. We can?t and shouldn?t raise our kids in a bubble, and we should train them to discern right from wrong and to reject wrong on their own.

But along the way we have to filter out the good from the bad for them, too, while they?re young, vulnerable and unprepared to do this consistently on their own.

If we don?t protect our children?s hearts and minds, who will?

So, how can we vigilantly safeguard our kids when it?s easier to just go along with the crowd ? especially when ?the crowd? is our Christian peers? These three guidelines have helped me immensely:

1. Pray in the moment ? and before those moments. Regularly ask God to equip you with the courage to look out for your kids? welfare. You can do all things through Christ who gives you strength (Philippians 4:3), including speaking up in situations like the one I described earlier.

2. Take ownership of your role as your children?s defender. Your friends aren?t responsible for how your kids turn out. Neither is your church or your children?s teachers, Awana leaders or coaches. Deuteronomy 6:6-9 says you are. Don?t shrink from it; take pride in it. My kids? Christian development matters to me. I want to do what it takes to instill lasting biblical faith in them. This mindset fuels my desire to protect them from negative influences.

3. Picture what you want your children to be like as adults. I believe God wants my girls to grow into Proverbs 31 women. Will watching a movie containing graphic violence, dozens of profanities and vulgarities and sexualized dialogue, clothing and situations help or hinder this goal? Seeing the big picture makes these decisions more clear-cut.

Rise in syphilis cases, 2 other STDs in California spurs concern

Syphilis cases in California jumped 18% from 2010 to 2011, according to new data released by the state Department of Public Health.

The data also show a 5% rise in chlamydia cases and 1.5% increase in gonorrhea cases.

Public health officials said they were concerned about the rise of all three sexually transmitted diseases because they can lead to even more serious health problems, like infertility and an increased risk of HIV.

"The longer people have these infections without being treated the more likely it is they are going to develop a complication that will have both health and financial costs," said Heidi Bauer, chief of the Sexually Transmitted Disease Control Branch for the state public health agency.

Chlamydia affected the highest number of people statewide, with about 164,000 cases reported in 2011. There were 27,000 gonorrhea cases and about 2,500 syphilis cases.

State public health officials are trying to target certain populations in their effort to reduce the transmission of the diseases. Syphilis is most prevalent among men who have sex with men, and gonorrhea affects young black women at far higher rates than young white women.

The state cannot pinpoint a reason for the increase in sexually transmitted diseases, but Bauer said that individuals may be engaging in more risky behaviors and becoming more complacent about practicing safe sex. In addition, because the infections are asymptomatic, people are often unaware they have been infected and unknowingly transmit them to others.

The state is also concerned about the decrease in funding for local programs that provide sexually transmitted disease testing and clinical services. Many programs have been eliminated or seen their budgets cut, leading to less health education, follow-up and testing, Bauer said.

Some athletes feel that it improves their performance, which is why it was so prevalent during the Olympics when athletes want to perform at the highest possible level. They will try anything that might give them an edge. However, Olympians and other athletes aren't the only ones who use this type of tape. It is also sometimes used in the treatment muscular dystrophy and other health conditions.

While some athletes and trainers swear by this tape, scientific studies have yet to prove that the tape is actually beneficial. This is partly due to athletes using this tape along with other types of treatment or preventative measures, making it hard to prove exactly what is causing any benefits to performance. The tape may just be causing a placebo effect, causing athletes to be less worried about injuries and thus improving their performance. However, even without studies to back up its use, many trainers and physical therapists have found the use of elastic therapeutic tape beneficial in their practices and continue to recommend its use. Further studies are needed to determine whether it actually provides any benefits, as the few small studies previously completed offer conflicting results as to whether elastic therapeutic tape actually improves performance in healthy athletes.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Los Angeles prosecutors are charging the father of singers Jessica and Ashley Simpson with two counts of drunken driving after his arrest earlier this month.

Wal-Mart second quarter profit rises, could miss Wall Street view

(Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc forecast full-year earnings that could fall short of Wall Street expectations, even as the world's largest retailer posted a bigger-than-expected jump in quarterly profit.

Sales at Walmart's U.S. stores open at least a year, or same-store sales, rose 2.2 percent in the second quarter. The discount retailer has notched four consecutive quarters of same-store sales growth at Walmart U.S., by far its largest unit.

Same-store sales, a key measure, came in just ahead of analysts' expectations of a 2.1 percent increase, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. The rise was within the company's forecast.

Same-store sales also rose at its international division and Sam's Club warehouse chain.

Wal-Mart raised and narrowed its full-year earnings per share forecast. It now expects to earn $4.83 to $4.93 a share, versus a prior target of $4.72 to $4.92.

Analysts' average target is $4.93.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? An unmanned experimental aircraft failed during an attempt to fly at six times the speed of sound in the latest setback for hypersonic flight.

The X-51A Waverider was designed to reach Mach 6, or 3,600 mph, after being dropped by a B-52 bomber off the Southern California coast on Tuesday. Engineers hoped it would sustain its top speed for five minutes, twice as long as an X-51A has gone before.

But the Air Force said Wednesday that a faulty control fin prevented it from starting its exotic scramjet engine and it was lost.

"It is unfortunate that a problem with this subsystem caused a termination before we could light the scramjet engine," Charlie Brink of the Air Force Research Laboratory at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, said in a statement.

The Waverider successfully detached from the B-52 and fired the rocket booster as planned. Then its scramjet engine was supposed to take over as it attempted to climb to Mach 6. But that never happened. Fifteen seconds after separating from the rocket booster, the Waverider lost control, preventing a test of the scramjet engine.

"All our data showed we had created the right conditions for engine ignition and we were very hopeful to meet our test objectives," Brink said.

The Pentagon has been testing hypersonic technologies in hopes of delivering strikes around the globe within minutes.

It was the latest failure for the Waverider program. A test flight last year ended prematurely with an X-51A trying to restart its engine until it plunged into the Pacific Ocean.

During the first flight of an X-51A in 2010, it reached near five times the speed of sound for three minutes.

There's only one X-51A vehicle left. The Air Force has not decided whether it will fly.

Mitt Romney may get a boost from his choice of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate ? and also from the upcoming Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.

That would be welcome to a campaign that saw slippage to President Barack Obama by several percentage points in polls before Saturday's Ryan announcement.

Positive bumps are common in presidential politics. But it's just as common for them to fade, sometimes quickly.

Sen. John McCain got a nice spike from his selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin followed immediately by an upbeat 2008 Republican convention in St. Paul, Minn. It allowed the GOP nominee to draw even with Obama in some polls heading into the fall campaign season.

But the gain was fleeting.

Controversy quickly arose over Palin's qualifications. And the ticket suffered from McCain's erratic response to September's financial meltdown, including his off-key claim that "all the fundamentals are fine."

Some polls show a divided initial response to Ryan's selection. They also suggest voters don't know much about him, despite his prominent role in Washington as the architect of conservative GOP budgets.

Both sides are now scrambling to define him for voters. Democrats paint a "right wing ideologue" whose budgets would gut Medicare and reward the wealthy with tax breaks at the expense of the middle class. Newly energized Republicans see him as a spirited champion of conservative values who would help rein in federal spending.

"If there is a bump, it's likely to be short-lived," said pollster Andy Kohut, president of the Pew Research Center, noting the Democratic convention closely follows the GOP one.

All four candidates campaigned Tuesday in battleground states.

Obama continued his bus trip across Iowa while Romney campaigned in Ohio. Ryan stumped in Colorado and Nevada, Vice President Joe Biden in rural southern Virginia.
