Castlederg IRA parade will pass three murder sites, say DUP

An IRA commemoration parade due to take place in Castlederg next month will pass three sites where people were murdered by the terror outfit, and within 150 yards of a fourth spot, DUP West Tyrone MLA Thomas Buchanan has said.

The Tyrone Volunteers Day event is planned to take place on Sunday August 11 to commemorate two IRA members killed in 1973 when the bomb they were transporting exploded.

This morning DUP MLA Arlene Foster and Sinn Fein MLA Barry McElduff debated the parade on the BBC?s Stephen Nolan radio show.

Ms Foster pointed out that a parade commemorating the July 7 bombers in London would never be allowed, while Mr McElduff argued that the Co Tyrone town sees a number of Orange Order parade and is majority catholic in terms of residents.

Mr Nolan asked Mr McElduff a number of times if he supported the bombing of Castlederg in the 1970s, to which Mr McElduff would not give a direct answer.

Sinn Fein has offered to re-route the parade away from the cenotaph in the town.

Now DUP MLA Thomas Buchanan has released a map to the media showing the three sites of IRA murders that the parade will pass, and pointed out that the parade will pass within 150 metres of a fourth murder site.

Mr Buchanan slammed the parade as ?base terrorist worship?.

?Castlederg suffered immensely during the troubles in Northern Ireland at the hands of terrorists with many people losing their lives,? he said. ?Sinn Fein has responded to this suffering and pain by planning to hold a march that glorifies some of those people responsible for inflicting that suffering upon the community.

?Their insensitivity has created a situation where they will be holding a march past the sites of several PIRA murders in the town. Indeed, it is possible that some of the people responsible for those murders, but who have up until now evaded justice, will be parading past the sites of their dastardly and murderous crimes.?

Mr Buchanan added: ?This is not about competing cultural expressions or aspirations: what Sinn Fein has planned for Castlederg represents base terrorist worship. No town in Northern Ireland should have to endure such a spectacle.?
