A week ago, the emerging website Sportsonearth.com put together a list of breakout players for the 2013 college football season. Surprisingly, Maryland?s Stefon Diggs didn?t make the cut. This week, Sportsonearth.com published a similar list of coaches on the hot seat. While Randy Edsall?wasn't among the top three, he did make the next group whose seats are ?Getting Warmer.?
Matt Brown wrote: ?In two seasons marred by a rash of transfers and unfortunate injuries, the Terps have gone 6-18, rubbing salt into the wounds of coach-in-waiting James Franklin?s departure for Vanderbilt. Maryland needs to get six wins and go bowling. If not, it?s hardly the direction the program would like to be moving in as it joins the Big Ten in 2014.?
Brown shook his own salt shaker when he then?included Franklin as one of the country?s rising college football coaching stars.
While I was not a Franklin fan when he got the Vanderbilt job, he has certainly turned me into a believer given what he has done in his two seasons in Nashville. It has also added to the scrutiny surrounding Edsall.
I?m on record saying that the Terps are capable of winning seven games this season if they can stay healthy. As long as Maryland can become bowl eligible, I think it quiets the chatter about Edsall?s job security at least through his team?s first season in the Big Ten in 2014.
But even being included among the second-tier of coaches potentially?on the hot seat doesn?t help when it comes to recruiting and fundraising.
