Significance Of Charter Private Jet Travel ? Information Catalog ...

For business executives and owners, there is a high possibility of using even the time of travel to the fullest. In special instances where someone may feel the need to travel in a relaxed and comfortable mode, then charter private jet is a good recommendation. Putting together the expenses that one may incur in commercial settings, including the lost time in trying to adhere to some of the airport procedures, this seems an efficient choice.

One popular objection to this way of travel by some companies is the definite high pricing associated with such types of flights. Comparing those hours spent travelling in this mode versus the numerous unproductive hours spent travelling commercially, a clear picture emerges. Thus, by chartering a jet, it allows executives accomplish even the most demanding business, with reduced wastage of time.

Holding business meetings en route to a destination is a possibility, considering that some trips normally require overnight stays. Thus, with the question of what the value of the time senior executives and business owners spend travelling is, an assessment of its true worth is key. It is in this manner that companies offering these services sells themselves.

Opposed to business aviation, some clients tend to fly for pleasure. In such instances, a vacation begins the minute someone boards a private jet and not after arrival at the destination. By flying in charter jets, one can travel at anytime, anywhere, with unmatched service and convenience.

The aspect of personal planning of events is a crucial feature in it all. This way, one gets to pick with whomever they feel like travelling. This also means that they get to choose the type of luxury services to enjoy including culinary combinations and ground transport immediately after touch down.

By actually using chartered jets, there is no obvious restriction to where to head with regard to airports. Here, it is an overall decision by the individual who hires for the plane. From a long list, they get to pick exact landing spotted after which concerned individuals make necessary arrangements. Generally, it satisfies them to learn that they are in control.

The limited number of passengers and crew involved lessens the details about searches and security protocol thus saving on crucial time. Queuing is thus not an option as there is particular need for such of course, unless there are special concerns. The travelling demands appearance of the passengers at appointed times only reducing unnecessary stress.

After learning of individual fight details, what remains is to contact a charter private jet broker. They then try to match up aircraft operators with the client. Typically, they have access to fine networks of operators and individual owners who in turn provide their customers with a number of planes to select from. These include the largest and most luxurious, versatile mid-sized and smaller and more economical light and very light ones. Depending on the nature of negotiations, the more the options one has hence better pricing as well.

Minstrel show: Ariz. Democrat releases photo of himself with darkened, more Hispanic face

A Democratic candidate for Arizona governor released a photograph of himself with his face digitally darkened so that he would look more Hispanic.

The candidate, Phoenix businessman Fred DuVal said he wanted show Republicans he is a ?good sport,? reports the Arizona Daily Independent.

DuVal?s stunt was a response to GOP chair Robert Graham, who had previously branded DuVal as ?the most uninteresting man in the world.? This phraseology reverses the moniker of the pitchman for Dos Equis beer, who is, of course, The Most Interesting Man in the World.

In the Dos Equis commercials, the famous beer spokesman is played by a rough-hewn, bearded character actor named Jonathan Goldsmith. He wears impeccable clothes and speaks in a deep, cultured Latino voice. He ends each ad with the tag line, ?Stay thirsty, my friends.?

In DuVal?s digitally altered photograph, the lily-white candidate does his best to look to like an imaginary Latino. He has a beard and is wearing a smoking jacket. His skin is sort of orange-brown. There?s a half-smoked cigar, an empty glass and a big candle in the foreground.

Along with the photo, DuVal?s response included a case of Dos Equis and a thank-you card that read ?Stay Desperate My Friends,? according to a blog called Arizona Eagletarian. The sender was labeled as ?The Most Electable Man in Arizona.?

DuVal sent the Photoshopped image to Graham and Chad Heyward, the executive director of the Arizona GOP.

Both sides spun the modern-day minstrel show as a huge win for their respective sides.

The Yellow Sheet Report, ?Arizona?s first and best political tip sheet,? basically judged the episode to be a win for the Democrat.

?DuVal had some fun with the Arizona Republican Party and Graham today, responding to the party?s decree that he is the ?most uninteresting man in the world? with some cerveza-based humor of his own,? the subscription-based website explained.

In a press release, DuVal said he was ?flattered? that the Republicans targeted him even before he has even wrapped up his party?s nomination.

A spokeswoman for the DuVal campaign, Leslie Sonnenklar, announced that the face-darkening stunt had netted DuVal $11,000 in donations.

Arizona Republicans disagreed.

?Painful attempts at humor, especially with racial overtones, usually backfire on candidates,? an Arizona GOP representative said.

?This is the kind of thing you might think was funny but would never do?unless you started drinking too many Dos Equis,? quipped a Republican who asked not to be identified.

Local Hispanic conservatives also had much to tell the Daily Independent.

?As a Latino, I was not offended at all by the allusion to the Dos Equis commercial guy,? Jose Borrajero, a member of the Arizona Latino Republican Association, said ?It was a very stupid prank by someone who wants to be taken seriously as a gubernatorial candidate. But one must admit: it was amusing. What is not funny is that the Democrat party has become the party of economic oppression of Latinos and other ?minorities?.

Rudy Pena, a Catholic and a self-described Reagan conservative, said the move ?reeks of a move by an insignificant org, heavily under the influence of both the Left and the consumption of ?Tequila.??

Questions About Home Improvement? Find The Answers Here ...

TIP! During the summer, make liberal use of fans. Ceiling fans do an excellent job of ensuring air circulates throughout the room, and this will help to cool things down.

Home improvement projects can be overwhelming to a new homeowner. However, it is a key part of owning your own home. If you are unsure how to get started with home improvement, the following advice can help.

TIP! If your door is still squeaky after trying every imaginable method to fix it, you might want to buy a new hinge. Every hardware store has them.

Use aluminum foil to mask electrical outlets before painting your room. Aluminum foil is a lot easier to use than tape, and it will protect the covers from unintentional splatters. Cleanup is a snap! Let paint dry prior to removing the foil.

TIP! Consider using radiant heat tiles when redoing any tile floors. Radiant heat tiles use electricity to heat the tiles and keep your feet warm.

Be creative with regards to home improvement and make sure you develop a solid plan. Once you?ve started a project, you?ll be able to know what steps to take and hard decisions won?t have to be made. Get inspiration by looking at your friend?s houses as well as through home improvement TV shows or magazines.

TIP! A good home improvement tip to use is to be creative when selecting a coffee table. You can use an older chest or something else as a coffee table, and sometimes they can work out great.

Arrange garage items in plastic boxes to keep organized. Get labels for these boxes, and be sure that they can stack together. Your garage will stay clean and keep pests from hiding in your home.

TIP! When you buy furniture, avoid busy upholstery pieces, recliners, sofas, couches, and chairs. Purchasing geometric shape or floral print items will automatically determine your home decor.

Almost anyone of any experience level can fix leaky faucets. The simple act of repairing faucets can reduce leaks, keeping water from being wasted. This project will save you money on your water bill.

TIP! Making a replacement window screen is a home improvement job you can easily handle yourself if finding a properly-sized one off the shelf isn?t possible. You can get a frame kit and cut it to fit any window.

Today, there is a new danger to look out for during home improvement projects. Stay away from drywall that was manufactured in China. Almost 8 years after their products first started wreaking havoc (2005), some Chinese drywall is still sub-par. The common issue with this drywall is quality control, or the lack thereof. There have been extreme circumstances where drywall that was imported from China caused wires within walls to corrode due to toxic gasses that were produced.

TIP! Use natural materials for interior home improvement projects whenever the budget will possibly allow it. Natural materials, such as wood, ceramic, and stone, are typically much better to use then synthetic ones.

If you have chosen to do something major to your house, make sure it complements the construction and style of your entire house. Having a patio and a garden that go with your home?s style look nice.

TIP! Install a pergola to add character to your home?s exterior. The beloved garden structure adds shade, visual interest and a sense of peacefulness.

Home builders will often install solid wood cabinets without hardware as a way to save on costs. Thankfully, it?s possible to buy handles, drawer pulls, and cabinet knobs at a home improvement store or online. You can choose from everything, from modern knobs to vintage looking pulls and designer hardware, all of which can be easily installed in a few minutes.

TIP! When repainting rooms in your house, look for no-VOC products. These paints are free of many of the potentially-harmful chemicals contained in standard paints, and they?re much better for the environment.

While you might think your kitchen floor is level, use a leveler when installing your cabinetry. Pick the highest spot on the floor, then mark a level line across the wall. This ensures that your cabinets and counters are level when you install them.

TIP! Give your septic tank regular care and maintenance. There are purchasable chemicals that will prevent overflow by speeding up the rate of decomposition.

Choose a great color scheme for the room you?re painting. Formal areas of your home, such as your dining area, should have a complementary scheme. Colors that complement one another across the wheel are always a great consideration when visual appeal is your primary concern. Such colors can include green and red or orange and purple. This color scheme offers a clear separation of colors and therefore is visually challenging, but highly effective.

TIP! Alway employ proper safety precautions. While it might seem unnecessary to adorn a hardhat within your home, you could end up saving your head! Spend some time researching safety equipment, and take the necessary precautions.

Choose one piece of decor in your room and build your color palette off it. It can be your floor rug, furniture upholstery, or even an item like a favorite lamp. For example, if you have a rug featuring green, red and yellow shades, choose a dominant color out of the three that should be used in 60% of the room. Use the remaining two colors just for accent purposes.

TIP! If you are making repairs to your gas system, you need to turn off the gas first. Remember, failing to do this can result in dangerous burns and even a gas explosion that causes a total loss on your home.

Now that you understand what to do, go do it. Take these tips and get going now. You can accomplish a lot if you start slowly and give yourself enough time to acquire more skills. When you know how to do what needs doing, it is easy.

Agent says Heat to sign Greg Oden

MIAMI (AP) ? Greg Oden is coming back to the NBA with the Miami Heat.

Mike Conley Sr., one of Oden's agents, said Oden has informed the Heat that he will accept their contract offer, a process that will likely be formally completed early next week.

Oden will sign a contract that will pay him about $1 million this coming season. He will have a player option for the 2014-15 season.

"He just thought that it was the best fit for him, where he's at and especially for how it relates to him coming back," Conley said Friday night. "He can be on a winning team and be working his way in slowly."

Oden's decision ends months of suspense that saw several NBA teams line up for a chance to sign the former No. 1 pick whose career has been derailed by a series of knee problems. Conley said Oden was also very interested in learning from Tim Duncan and playing for Gregg Popovich in San Antonio, that he was impressed when he met with Dallas owner Mark Cuban, and that he's had a close relationship for some time with New Orleans coach Monty Williams.

But in the end, the Heat won out. They had been widely believed to be the frontrunners to land Oden for some time, and now get to add a 7-footer to a team that's won the last two NBA championships.

TVA solar energy limits don?t keep up with demand

Alan Howell | MBJ

Solar array at Memphis Bioworks Foundation parking garage on Union is one of the city's higher profile installations.

The Tennessee Valley Authority released 2.5 megawatts of solar space in the Green Power Providers program Aug., and it took less than a day before it was acquired and exceeded by 20 percent.

Launched by TVA last year, Green Power Providers pays for solar power generated as part of a 20-year contract, providing $1,000 in incentive payments to help offset costs for projects with a size of up to 50 kilowatts.

Earlier this year, TVA had a capacity of 7.5 megawatts for new systems. One megawatt can power 1,000 houses.

A story about TVA?s strategy to address the growth of solar in Tennessee is in today?s issue of MBJ. The utility is under fire from solar installers and organizations in the state who believe it isn?t meeting the growing demand from small businesses who want to install solar arrays.

According to TenneSEIA, which represents the solar industry in Tennessee, the 2.5 megawatts was quickly absorbed by three solar providers in the state.

?TVA?s current program for solar energy development leaves the market under served and as a result, it creates a boom-bust cycle for the industry,? Gil Hough, president of TenneSEIA, said. ?There is a proven, market based remedy for the unintended and unnecessary risks to businesses and jobs that TVA?s current solar development program provides and TenneSEIA looks forward to exploring those options with TVA management and its board of directors.?

TVA is planning to meet and discuss solar capacity with the industry during its 2014 budget meeting, scheduled for Aug. 22 in Knoxville.

TVA has other incentive programs available for larger systems, but it is also exploring its options for systems. Companies that install solar arrays can sell the power generated by those arrays back to TVA, resulting in lower electric bills.

Sante Fe County Issues Call For Marriage Equality In New Mexico

Posted by: Bridgette P. LaVictoire on July 31, 2013.

Flag_of_New_Mexico.svgNew Mexico does not have an actual ban on same-sex marriage, but that is not stopping anyone from assuming that there is one. Without a firm ruling, it may be difficult for same-sex couples to get marriage licenses everywhere in the state. This is why a lawsuit has been filed asking for clarity on same-sex marriage rights.

Santa Fe County has passed a bill which calls upon the governing bodies of New Mexico to ?rid the State of the antiquated statutes that restrict the rights of same-sex couples to wed.? The resolution passed 4 to 1. County Commissioners Stefanics Holian, Chavez and Mayfield all voted in favor while Commissioner Anaya opposed the measure.

Linda Siegle, a resident of Santa Fe and the owner of Resources for Change, stated ?Santa Feans are acutely aware of the second class status of their gay and lesbian sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, friends and colleagues. Tonight, our commissioner allies have taken another step closer to changing our status.?

This particular resolution is one of several which make the same, basic call for LGBT marriage equality.

Equality New Mexico Executive Director Amber Royster stated that ?There has long been a movement for same-sex relationship recognition in New Mexico. We are finally reaching a critical mass of support and engagement from our community and allies, as well as an understanding among New Mexicans that the freedom to marry is a matter of basic fairness and respect. Having local governments publicly affirm our New Mexico values of family and commitment is a tremendous boost to our efforts and to our Land of Enchantment.?

The ACLU of New Mexico, the National Center for Lesbian Rights and other groups have filed two Writs of Mandamus before the state Supreme Court calling for a ruling on whether or not same-sex couples can marry in New Mexico. The state does not have a legal or constitutional ban on same-sex marriage and the state?s marriage law does not have any gender indicators.

Should the Court refuse the two writs, then the lawsuits that were filed earlier this year will proceed.

Castlederg IRA parade will pass three murder sites, say DUP

An IRA commemoration parade due to take place in Castlederg next month will pass three sites where people were murdered by the terror outfit, and within 150 yards of a fourth spot, DUP West Tyrone MLA Thomas Buchanan has said.

The Tyrone Volunteers Day event is planned to take place on Sunday August 11 to commemorate two IRA members killed in 1973 when the bomb they were transporting exploded.

This morning DUP MLA Arlene Foster and Sinn Fein MLA Barry McElduff debated the parade on the BBC?s Stephen Nolan radio show.

Ms Foster pointed out that a parade commemorating the July 7 bombers in London would never be allowed, while Mr McElduff argued that the Co Tyrone town sees a number of Orange Order parade and is majority catholic in terms of residents.

Mr Nolan asked Mr McElduff a number of times if he supported the bombing of Castlederg in the 1970s, to which Mr McElduff would not give a direct answer.

Sinn Fein has offered to re-route the parade away from the cenotaph in the town.

Now DUP MLA Thomas Buchanan has released a map to the media showing the three sites of IRA murders that the parade will pass, and pointed out that the parade will pass within 150 metres of a fourth murder site.

Mr Buchanan slammed the parade as ?base terrorist worship?.

?Castlederg suffered immensely during the troubles in Northern Ireland at the hands of terrorists with many people losing their lives,? he said. ?Sinn Fein has responded to this suffering and pain by planning to hold a march that glorifies some of those people responsible for inflicting that suffering upon the community.

?Their insensitivity has created a situation where they will be holding a march past the sites of several PIRA murders in the town. Indeed, it is possible that some of the people responsible for those murders, but who have up until now evaded justice, will be parading past the sites of their dastardly and murderous crimes.?

Mr Buchanan added: ?This is not about competing cultural expressions or aspirations: what Sinn Fein has planned for Castlederg represents base terrorist worship. No town in Northern Ireland should have to endure such a spectacle.?

New iPad mini will come with iPhone 5?s A6 chip, sans Retina Display

Newly discovered code in iOS 7 Software Development Kit (SDK) points towards a second-generation iPad mini with improved internals, but with the same display resolution.

ipad mini display close up

The news comes from 9to5Mac which was tipped by an iOS developer who has found references to new iPad mini models deep within the iOS 7 SDK.

Codenamed J75, J76 and J77, these new iPad minis are running the same dual-core ?A6? chip as the iPhone 5. The A6 was a big jump over the A5 used in iPhone 4S, so this bodes well for the next-generation iPad mini. Expect better-looking games, faster-loading apps, and a general improvement in everyday performance.

App artwork references for the iPad mini models in the iOS 7 SDK lacked the ?@2x? hook that is always associated with Retina Display iOS devices. The next iPad mini won?t have a beast of a display, but you get excellent battery life and lightweight design in exchange for it. Isn?t that exactly what you are looking for in a smaller tablet anyway?

In the minds of hardware enthusiasts, this does puts the new iPad mini at a disadvantage against Google?s latest Nexus 7, which now comes with a hugely improved 1920 x 1200 Full HD display.

I have no doubt that we will eventually see an iPad mini with Retina Display, but it is certainly not happening this year if today?s evidence is to be believed.

Facebook passes $38 initial public offering price

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook's stock has passed its $38 IPO price for the first time since its rocky public debut last May, crossing a symbolic hurdle that has eluded it for more than a year.

Shares of Facebook Inc. increased 1.2 percent to $38.08 in morning trading Wednesday. That's the highest the stock has traded since the company's highly anticipated initial public offering ended with a thud. The stock is up by more than 50 percent since last week.

The world's biggest online social network has been on a roll since reporting stronger-than-expected earnings on July 24. Investors are especially upbeat about its fast-growing mobile advertising revenue.

Facebook's ability to grow mobile revenue was one of the biggest concerns in the weeks leading up to its IPO last year. Investors were worried that its ad business was not migrating to mobile gadgets as quickly as its user base. Facebook urged patience.

In the April-June quarter, Facebook derived 41 percent of its ad revenue from mobile advertising, or about $656 million of $1.6 billion. That's up from zero in the spring of 2012 and from 30 percent in the January-March quarter of this year. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said last week that the company has "made good progress growing our community, deepening engagement and delivering strong financial results, especially on mobile."

Still, Facebook has room to grow. Research firm eMarketer expects Facebook to increase its mobile advertising revenue more than fourfold to more than $2 billion this year. This would give the Menlo Park, Calif., company a 13 percent share of the global mobile ad market, up from about 5 percent last year.

Facebook is currently No. 2 in mobile ads, well behind Google. EMarketer estimates that Google had a 52 percent share of the global $8.8 billion mobile ad market last year. This year, the firm expects Google's share to grow to 56 percent.

What?s it like? You can find some fantasy football alternatives in ESPN Fantasy Football and NFL.com Fantasy Football 2013.

Cartoon Network VideoWhat?s it about? Cartoon Network Video gives users the ability to watch full Cartoon Network episodes on their Android devices by streaming them over an Internet connection.

What?s cool? Cartoon Network has some great programming for cable subscribers, and Cartoon Network Video brings lots of that programming to you on your mobile devices as well as your TV. They generally feature tough difficulty, permanent death that results in players having to start over from scratch, and turn-based play as players make their way around levels built on grids. Ending has all those elements but is more of a puzzle title. You control an @ symbol in each of the game's 60 dungeons, and your goal is to stay alive as you try to get to an E symbol that represents the dungeon's exit. You have to move on each turn, so you'll spend a lot of time anticipating and avoiding enemies that work their way toward you in an attempt to destroy you. Ending also limits the number of moves you can make in a given dungeon, so planning your route and strategizing ahead of time is key.

Who?s it for? Players who enjoy puzzlers with elements of games like chess should try their hands at Ending.

What?s it like? Of course, if you like Ending's chess-like qualities, you should grab Chess, and you can get some serious rogue-like action out of Dungelot.

Pelosi: GOP to blame for partisanship

Source: USA TODAY

McLEAN, VA. ? Americans have historically low views of Congress, but House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., says Republicans have fueled that disgust for political reasons and Democrats can win elections by highlighting GOP obstructionism.

?Nothing deters voting more than confusion, ?a pox on both your houses,? and that confusion is one of the successes of the Republican Party, to make it look equivalent in terms of who is holding up jobs. It?s not equivalent, and we have to make that clear to the American people,? Pelosi said Tuesday at a meeting with the USA TODAY editorial board.

Heading in to confrontations with Republicans this fall on implementation of the Affordable Care Act, funding the government, and raising the debt ceiling, Pelosi said congressional Democrats and President Obama are positioning the party as the bipartisan, cooperative alternative to what she described as the ?anti-government ideologues? in the Republican Party.

?One thing that is amazing that I don?t have an answer for people for is, why is it there can?t be a bipartisan jobs bill passed that is significant?? she said. ?One (reason) is, they don?t want this president to have any successes.?

Pelosi praised Obama as ?one of the most practically non-partisan presidents I have seen in the White House? who is intent on finding bipartisan agreement, particularly to head off another round of fiscal crises. She said she is willing to support the president?s efforts to reach a broad bipartisan agreement with Republicans, and praised the White House proposal Tuesday to overhaul the corporate tax code ? a GOP priority ? in exchange for more spending on infrastructure projects to spur job growth.

?I think that there?s some glimmers that there?s a possibility of coming to a grand bargain, and the grander the better,? she said.

Pelosi said Democrats will continue to seek additional revenues in fiscal negotiations to reduce the deficit, and she said Democrats were willing to consider changes to Social Security and Medicare that do not fundamentally alter the entitlement programs by, for example, privatizing retirement accounts.

Painting the GOP as unwilling to cooperate to solve problems is key to Democratic efforts to win back control of the House next year, Pelosi said. ?I see a revival of bipartisanship, of people saying, ?What is this thing that they are opposed to everything?? This is not a manifestation of most Republicans in the country. This is an ideological wing.

?There?s really a heightened awareness (from voters) of Republicans? obstructing, obstructing, obstructing everything that comes down the pike,? she said. ?They see these extreme measures and they realize that this is different ? this is an over-the-edge crowd that is unlike any other.?

Pelosi was harshly dismissive of the House GOP agenda, particularly an effort this week to pass a series of bills intended to reign in the federal government and increase transparency. ?These ? what I would call ?cheap shot agenda? things ? are nothing. We should be voting on a jobs bill,? she said. ?This is a waste of the taxpayers? money, all this stuff. Is there occasionally an appealing idea that may creep in one place? Maybe. But it?s really not worth the business of the House to call that an agenda to reduce the size of government.?

Pelosi said Republicans are resistant to agree with Democrats on any issue, noting that she and 181 Democrats sent Obama a letter Tuesday pressing the administration to respond to ongoing concerns about National Security Agency surveillance programs. While Republicans have led efforts in the House to end the surveillance, no Republican House members signed the letter.

A spokesman for Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., defended House Republicans against Pelosi?s criticisms. ?Minority Leader Pelosi has voted against every jobs bill we?ve put forward this Congress, including construction of the Keystone pipeline, the SKILLS job training bill and the Working Families Flexibility Act, which offered working parents a more flexible work schedule. Rather than obstruct and play politics, perhaps she is ready to constructively work with us as some in her conference appear eager to do, and drop the extremism,? said Rory Cooper.

Cooper further defended the GOP?s agenda this week on reining in the federal government. ?Rather than waste taxpayer money, this legislation is specifically designed to protect it by making agency heads approve lavish conferences and allowing public employees to be put on unpaid leave when they are under investigation for serious ethical abuses. Who could oppose that?? Cooper said.

Democrats face significant headwinds in 2014. Historically, the ?six-year itch? for a second term president has hurt his political party in Congress. In addition, a 2012 process redrew congressional districts and made fewer seats competitive for either party, so there are fewer chances for Democrats to unseat Republicans.

Republicans have made clear they intend to make the Affordable Care Act a defining issue of the 2014 elections as the two parties continue to battle over the merits of the health care law that has open enrollment starting in October.

Pelosi, who played a critical role in passing the law in 2010 when she was speaker, acknowledged that the government faces a challenge in getting people to sign up because of negative attitudes toward the health care insurance industry. But she dismissed criticism that the law is unworkable, despite the administration delaying enforcement of the employer mandate for one year.

?There?s no bill that?s ever been written that you could say that every single thing in it, on its timetable, and in its specifics, should never be changed,? she said, ??It?s a good balance and it?s going to help people?s lives.?

She also dismissed the notion that Democrats would suffer at the polls as the law goes into effect. ?Why are we here? We are here to do the job for the American people. Social Security. Medicare. Health care for all Americans as a right not a privilege. Who of us is more important than that? Elections? Let the chips fall where they may.?

Make the Most Bacon-y Burger with the Bacon Weave and Other Tricks

Make the Most Bacon-y Burger with the Bacon Weave and Other Tricks

If you're going to indulge in a bacon cheeseburger, you might as well go whole hog (sorry for the pun) and get the most bacon flavor out of it. Serious Eats shows us how to do that.

The first part of the puzzle is how to arrange the bacon for the most coverage and stability (no bacon-less bits or valuable pieces falling off your burger). Comparing several methods, including the simple X shape, triangle shapes, parallel placement, and the bacon quilt, Kenji Lopez-Alt found weaving the bacon before cooking it is the best solution. (We mentioned this technique before for BLTs.)

Don't just stop at topping your burger with bacon, though. For more bacon flavor that surprisingly doesn't overwhelm the burger taste, sear the meat patty in the bacon fat, toast the buns with a layer of it, and also add a dab of the rendered bacon fat to your special sauce.

Hit up the link below for the full guide and a step-by-step slideshow to take your burgers to the next bacon level.

RE: Do you think President Obama will succeed to improve the U.S. economy? by Anonymous

We have already given Obama, and his lunatic party, too many chances.? So far they have only blown it, and much appears to be purposeful mismanagement if not outright embezzlement.

I realize that people who are consmed with hate and scream blasphemy in church cannot be helped at all, but that is the full sum worth of the Democrats -- and they know it.

Latest Verizon Galaxy S4 Build (VRUAME7) Rooted, Power Users Still Waiting On Unlocked Bootloader

If you updated your Verizon Galaxy S4 to the latest over-the-air build, or bought one after it was already installed, you might already be aware that it's been especially resistant to root attempts. Savvy power users have stayed well away from the updated VRUAME7 firmware, which makes rolling back to an earlier build impossible. But as is so often the case, two enterprising XDA-Developers posters have solved at least some of the problems, and released a new rooting method for the latest OTA.

The exploit comes from XDA members hiikezoe, DoomLoRD, and PWM978, among others. It's a bit unconventional: you'll need to use a custom-formatted MicroSD card with the root exploit files loaded up, plus a terminal emulator on the phone itself. The process isn't all that difficult if you're used to the more typical forms of rooting (as opposed to one-click solutions and the like) but it's clear that this technique took a lot of work. You'll want to follow the steps in the XDA post to the letter.

While this will restore access to root apps for those running the latest Verizon firmware, these users are still out of luck when it comes to an unlocked bootloader, and the wider custom ROM capabilities that come with it. At the moment there's also no custom recovery option. Locked bootloaders are notoriously difficult to work around, and while developers have become better at cracking them, it's certainly possible that no solution will be found. There's currently a $3,915 community bounty being offered for a full modding solution.

As always with this sort of thing, it's best not to proceed if you want to hang on to your warranty. If you're ready to take the plunge, hit up the source link below for the necessary files and instructions.

The taller a postmenopausal woman, the greater risk of cancer

NEW YORK, July 28 (UPI) -- The taller a postmenopausal woman, the greater her risk for developing cancers of the breast, colon, kidney, ovary, rectum and thyroid, U.S. researchers say.

Geoffrey Kabat, senior epidemiologist in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in New York, said the study involved 20,928 postmenopausal women, identified from a larger group of 144,701 women recruited to the Women's Health Initiative.

"We were surprised at the number of cancer sites that were positively associated with height. In this data set, more cancers are associated with height than were associated with body mass index," Kabat said in a statement.

"Ultimately, cancer is a result of processes having to do with growth, so it makes sense that hormones or other growth factors that influence height may also influence cancer risk."

Some genetic variations associated with height are also linked to cancer risk, and more studies are needed to better understand how these height-related genetic variations predispose some men and women to cancer, Kabat said.

The study found for every 10-centimeter -- 3.94 inches -- increase in height, there was a 13 percent increase in risk of developing any cancer. Among specific cancers, there was a 13 percent to 17 percent increase in the risk of getting melanoma and cancers of the breast, ovary, endometrium, and colon, while there was a 23 percent to 29 percent increase in the risk of developing cancers of the kidney, rectum, thyroid and blood.

The study was published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.

Alumni corner: Legacy High grad Ziegler taking scholarly approach to golf camp

AIMING TO HELP GOLFERS MAKE THE GRADE: Legacy High and Stanford alum Steve Ziegler, pictured at the 2009 Palmer Cup at Cherry Hills Country Club, is joining with other local high school graduate golfers to present a college prep golf clinic next week at Eagle Trace Golf Course. (Karl Gehring / The Denver Post)

Learn more

For more information on the college prep golf clinic, call Eagle Trace Golf Course at 303-466-3322 or Steve Ziegler at 303-589-5825.

Steve Ziegler has been there and done that.

The former Legacy High School state champion golfer is now giving back to the community and the game that has opened so many doors for him.

He and former area players Lara Pocs (Holy Family), Ryan Eres (Broomfield) and Bryce Babcock (Legacy) are putting together the first annual College Prep Clinic Wednesday through Friday at Eagle Trace Golf Club.

"We were all successful collegiate golfers and the thing we are stressing is what it takes," said Ziegler, who played his college golf at Stanford. "This is all about what they need to do to achieve their next goals.

"It's a junior golf clinic at heart, but the main things we are stressing are education and integrity."

Kids ages 12 and younger will attend the clinic from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and those 13 and older from 1 to 4 p.m.

There is just going out and hitting balls on the range and then there is having a practice routine that could take your game to a whole new level. That is some of the instruction and knowledge the foursome will look to impart on willing minds. And it come at just the right time for would-be high school players.

With tryouts just around the corner, Ziegler hopes the clinic can give those kids a slight advantage.

"There are many high school coaches that are avid golfers and they are good golfers, but they don't have the tangible experience of having been there and knowing the different things that will arise," said Ziegler, who has spent some time playing on mini tours throughout the country.

" It is very difficult to balance school and golf. The collegiate golfer goes through things the professional doesn't, and I know that because I've done both ? I've played in Q-school and played in a Tour event. I really think it is something the kids can benefit from and we can offer it to them at a price in which you would normally get one lesson."

The prestigious Stanford Junior Camps, the model Ziegler will use for his three-day camp for $150, went over the basics of the game from putting, chipping, pitching and sand shots. But more importantly the mindful aspects from course management, rules and etiquette.

"All along we are stressing the core education values, the stuff that actually goes into being a collegiate golfer, beyond just shooting scores," said Ziegler, who graduated from Stanford in 2011. "That is very important and we want them to be able to get to that point, too. That's a pure joy we know. But basically what I'm trying to do is to emulate what my experience was at Stanford and those junior clinics were just phenomenal."

Ziegler's years in Palo Alto afforded him the opportunity not only to play golf at a higher level, but the chance to mingle with dignitaries, financial gurus and some of golfs greatest names ... including former Cardinal Tiger Woods. All things he dreamed about as a child, but through hard work and dedication turned into a reality as an adult.

"It sounds weird to correlate a game with life, but it is so true. I never realized how much has been afforded to me by the game. That is why I feel so indebted to it and giving back," he said.

"I want other kids to achieve that and see where it can go and if I can help proliferate that some way."

Victory For Georgia Football Player Kolton Houston

Kolton Houston (75) takes the field at G-Day, UGA's annual spring game.

Kolton Houston (75) takes the field at G-Day, UGA?s annual spring game, in 2012.

Earlier this week, I wrote about the plight of University of Georgia football player Kolton Houston, whom the NCAA declared ineligible for play for three years because of a steroid that a doctor injected into his body when he was in high school.

On Thursday, Houston received the news he has been awaiting since 2010: he can play between the hedges for the Bulldogs this fall.

Kolton Houston?s three-year struggle to regain NCAA eligibility is finally over.

The Georgia offensive lineman passed his most recent NCAA drug screening, allowing him to join the Bulldogs? active roster for the first time in his college career.

He learned of his reinstatement in a call from UGA director of sports medicine Ron Courson on Thursday.

?I took the test last Thursday,? Houston told ESPN?s DawgNation. ?I was moving out of my house when Ron called me with the news. I was stunned. I didn?t know what to think. All the past years? emotions hit me at once.?

The icing on the cake (literally)? Thursday was Houston?s birthday.

?This is the best birthday present I?ve ever had,? Houston said about his reinstatement. ?I had almost reached the point where I thought this situation would never end. When I got the call, I broke down and cried for about 30 minutes. I had that much emotion stored up and it felt good to get it out. I?m ready now to show what I can do.?

CORVALLIS, Ore. A new study published this week in the journal Nature reveals for the first time how the mixing of cold, deep waters from below can change sea surface temperatures on seasonal and longer timescales.

Because this occurs in a huge region of the ocean that takes up heat from the atmosphere, these changes can influence global climate patterns, particularly global warming.

Using a new measurement of mixing, Jim Moum and Jonathan Nash of the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University have obtained the first multi-year records of mixing that permit assessment of seasonal changes. This is a significant advance beyond traditional shipboard measurements that are limited to the time that a ship can be away from port. Small instruments fueled by lithium batteries were built to be easily deployed on deep-sea equatorial moorings.

Moum employs a simple demonstration to show how mixing works.

He pours cold, white cream into a clear glass mug full of hot, black coffee, very carefully, using a straw to inject the heavier cream at the bottom of the mug, where it remains.

"Now we can wait until the cream diffuses into the coffee, and we'll have a nice cuppa joe," Moum says. "Unfortunately, the coffee will be cold by then. Or, we can introduce some external energy into the system, and mix it."

A stirring spoon reveals motions in the mug outlined by the black/white contrasts of cream in coffee until the contrast completely disappears, and the color achieves that of caf au lait.

"Mixing is obviously important in our normal lives, from the kitchen to the dispersal of pollutants in the atmosphere, reducing them to levels that are barely tolerable," he said.

The new study shows how mixing, at the same small scales that appear in your morning coffee, is critical to the ocean. It outlines the processes that create the equatorial Pacific cold tongue, a broad expanse of ocean near the equator that is roughly the size of the continental United States, with sea surface temperatures substantially cooler than surrounding areas.

Because this is a huge expanse that takes up heat from the atmosphere, understanding how it does so is critical to seasonal weather patterns, El Nino, and to global climate change.

In temperate latitudes, the atmosphere heats the ocean in summer and cools it in winter. This causes a clear seasonal cycle in sea surface temperature, at least in the middle of the ocean. At low latitudes near the equator, the atmosphere heats the sea surface throughout the year. Yet a strong seasonal cycle in sea surface temperature is present here, as well. This has puzzled oceanographers for decades who have suspected mixing may be the cause but have not been able to prove this.

Moum, Nash and their colleagues began their effort in 2005 to document mixing at various depths on an annual basis, which previously had been a near-impossible task.

"This is a very important area scientifically, but it's also quite remote," Moum said. "From a ship it's impossible to get the kinds of record lengths needed to resolve seasonal cycles, let alone processes with longer-term cycles like El Nino and La Nina. But for the first time in 2005, we were able to deploy instrumentation to measure mixing on a NOAA mooring and monitor the processes on a year-round basis."

The researchers found clear evidence that mixing alone cools the sea surface in the cold tongue, and that the magnitude of mixing is influenced by equatorial currents that flow from east to west at the surface, and from west to east in deeper waters 100 meters beneath the surface.

"There is a hint although it is too early to tell that increased mixing may lead, or have a correlation to the development of La Nia," Moum said. "Conversely, less mixing may be associated with El Nio. But we only have a six-year record we'll need 25 years or more to reach any conclusions on this question."

Nash said the biggest uncertainty in climate change models is understanding some of the basic processes for the mixing of deep-ocean and surface waters and the impacts on sea surface temperatures. This work should make climate models more accurate in the future.

###

The research was funded by the National Science Foundation, and deployments have been supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Continued research will add instruments at the same equatorial mooring and an additional three locations in the equatorial Pacific cold tongue to gather further data.
